Titans upset Broncos 14-10 in NRL
Related coverage
Gold Coast scored a spirited 14-10 win over Brisbane at Skilled Park on Friday night, aided by rugby league’s first eight-point try in two years.
Veteran prop Luke Bailey recovered from an accidental knee midway through the first half to score the first eight-point try since Sydney Roosters’ centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall against Manly in round 25 of the 2010 season.
Brisbane fullback Josh Hoffman was punished for striking Bailey in the face when attempting to punch the ball from his hands.
Bailey jumped to his feet keen to let Hoffman know he didn’t appreciate the hit as players ran in from both sides.
Referee Jared Maxwell conferred with video referee Paul Simpkins before awarding the eight-pointer in the 62nd minute to break a 6-6 halftime deadlock.
The win snapped Brisbane’s run of six straight wins over Gold Coast since 2009 and delighted the crowd of 20,067, the Titans’ biggest of the year.
It could prove a costly night for the Broncos with their State of Origin forward Ben Te’o and fullback Hoffman both placed on report and several players appearing to suffer injuries.
Referee Allan Shortfall put Te’o on report for a high swinging arm on Bailey in the 60th minute.
Bailey, who copped an accidental knee from Brisbane halfback Peter Wallace midway through the opening half, was outstanding in the second 40 minutes.
Te’o crossed wide out for a try in the final minute of the game and appeared to appeal to the referee for an eight-pointer.
Wallace missed the conversion.
The win keeps Gold Coast in touch with the top eight and puts Brisbane at risk of dropping out of the top four if South Sydney and Cronulla win their weekend games.
Titans coach John Cartwright was not getting carried away by the win but, with State of Origin stars Greg Bird and Ashley Harrison both due back from injury next week, was clearly feeling good.
“To keep sides like that, who throw as much as they do at you, is a big effort,” he said.
Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin said his players didn’t back up their strong effort that steered them home against the Warriors a week ago.
“We were very poor. I don’t think we had the effort to win tonight. We were waiting for the other team to hand us a win.
“I’m not taking anything away from the Titans – they were too good for us tonight.”
Cartwright praised Bailey’s effort: “He a freak. He gets better with age. You wind him up and he goes until he drops.”
Both sides suffered casualties with Brisbane centre Justin Hodges likely to miss two or three weeks with a hamstring injury and Corey Parker, who played his 250th NRL game, suffering a low-grade medial strain.
Titans forward Nate Myles (sternum) was the most serious for the home side but winger Michael Gordon and forward Luke Douglas were limping after the game.

Looks like half a game Hodges will be out for his normal holiday period. He might as well take wallace and Hoffman with him, bot useless as tits on a bull.
Sometimes you wonder if wallace is a senior player, he never seems to take the right option on the last tackle.
Getting caught with the ball on the fifth tackle while he should be ready to kick is driving me mad. How long has this guy been running around now, and he has no vision.
Hoffman has not made one break sinse Locky retired.
I am glad Micheals was playing for the coast, or the score might have been bigger. Ball on his chest into the open and he drops it, old Carty must be desparate.. Mind you, he did a better job than alot of the Broncos players.

Boring, predictable, inept and bereft of ideas sadly my Broncs don’t have the fire power in the halves to win us a title this year. Canterbury, Melbourne and Manly will all punish displays like that in coming weeks. We’ll be lucky to finish eighth.

Pathetic crowd for a derby should of been 20k minimum considering the Titans are in a better position than last year and Broncos are in the top 8. Poor effort by SEQ League fans.

Correction: There was 20k there if anything it should of been a sell out. Same goes in Brisbane QLD derbys should mean sellouts. End of until that occurs then QLD doesn’t deserve another team. Brisbane 2 will come anyway despite my opinion.

I’m a Broncos fan that lives on the coast. I got here 10 minutes before kick off. I don’t blame Broncos fans for not getting there. Its a pain to get there unless you live on a train station. The crowd was about 70% to 30%. Would of been a small all out on at Saturday or Sunday.

Terrible public transport getting to the game. Will be interesting to see if the Suns get 20+ today.

Bonkcos, no typo, played the same boring game plan as they did last week against the Warriors and it doesn’t look like inproving in the near future. One man hit ups all night with little variation around the ruck leaving little options for their balll players. These plays don’t have the Titans defenders second guessing. Also, they’re slow across the roster and with pace on the horizon. I can’t seeing them finishing in the top 4 but the sides likey to finish there [Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, Cowboys & Storm] have speed to score from anywhere on the park!
