Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

I’ve had enough! Ever since Saturday night, all I’ve heard and read is a lot of complaining and mean spirited comments against the Reds and their supporters.
Below are a few of the comments I have had to endure since Saturday night’s loss to the Sharks at Suncorp Stadium:
“What a pathetic performance. Didn’t deserve to even be there…. Remember you were standing up for Aussie rugby.”
“Reds you are terrible, Australian rugby is a joke!”
But the online vitriol didn’t stop there.
“Hahahahahhah….. that’s what you get all arrogant fans of the reds, Sharks absolutely screwed the Reds, and you deserve what you get. This just shows how poor the Australian conference is, your top team can’t even beat sixth place – justice is now served. So now please go crawl back into your hole and shut up. Thank you!”
These are just a few of the comments posted online by rugby fans from around the world since the loss and I’ve had a gutful. As a passionate Reds supporter, I was gutted by the loss and dumbfounded by the amount of hate towards the team, the players and their supporters.
Yes, I probably should have stayed away from the forums and websites, but I couldn’t help myself.
But what astounded me more than anything is the hate from Australian rugby fans toward us. Comments that the players and fans are arrogant, that we are bogans and don’t know the rules and that we are pathetic.
I know that we didn’t play to our usual standard and that the Sharks played a better game on the night, so rightly deserved the win. However, do we deserve the amount of hate laid at our feet?
The Reds, like the Sharks, had come into the qualifying final having won their last six matches in a row. One of those matches was against the Chiefs who were at the top of the table at the time of the clash.
We had won the Australian Conference rightfully after securing a bonus point win against the Waratahs, while the much favoured Brumbies lost at the final hurdle to the lowly ranked Blues.
We had suffered cruelly at the hand of the injury gods with our no. 10 jersey seemingly cursed. We lost our captain at the business end of the season, and yet we still made it to the finals.
We had two of our top players face the SANZAR judiciary and receive, in my humble opinion, suspensions that were not fitting the crime. As Quade Cooper tweeted earlier this week SANZAR = Lottery!
We achieved a record average crowd of 34,000 and increased memberships by 100% this season.
We are also the team who came from second last on the ladder in 2009 to Super Rugby Champions in 2011 so we have a right to be proud of the team after so many years in the wilderness.
I for one am proud of how far we got with everything that happened this season. Just a few weeks before the finals, it didn’t event look like we would make it. It was a great achievement to make the playoffs from that situation.
Yes, I’ll admit we are in the weakest conference, especially with the Waratahs having one of their worst seasons this year. But we all must remember that South Africa also has two of the lowest ranked teams in their conference in the Cheetahs and the wooden spoon Lions.
It was also South Africa who demanded the home final for all of the conference winners, not Australia. The fact that the Reds are the ones who have taken advantage of this situation this season is purely out of their hands, so it’s time to move on.
The Reds have made the best of the situation and worked hard despite everything that was thrown at them this year and they still made it to the finals.
By most other teams’ standards, the Reds had a great year. So, rugby fans, lay off my Reds!

Hi Irene,
I understand where you are coming from but …
The online world tends to bring out the worst in people and is an outlet for frustrated emotions and sorting out many anger issues.
For instance we all know that like most Kiwi’s Ohtani’s Jacket has a huge unrequited love of Quade Cooper and hides his hurt that the Quadester wisely chose to play and live in Brissy with constant abuse and denigration of everything Queensland. They are absolutely petrified of Genia because they know he is better than any halfback in New Zealand so choose to run him down at every opportunity.
And our poor Southern friends have had to 1) Tahs – endure a disaster of a season even by their rich recent standards or 2) Brumbies – play really well only to be denied a finals berth at the last moment. Interstate rivalry has always been intense, and often petty and personal. Complete with strong parochial views – to this day most Sydney rugby people believe that playing a few decent games of club rugby in the Shute Shield entitles a player to a Wallaby jumper.
More importantly and a tad more seriously – it was much the same on here in the leadup and immediate aftermath of the Reds 2011 win, quite genuinely depressing at times. But when you actually get ou and meet people face to face its a different story. An example were the great Crusaders supporters who I met in the celebrations following last years finals. They were disappointed their team had lost but certaionloy happy to congratulate the winners. Similarly, speak to most Kiwi’s who were actually at the ground in the RWC Semi in 2011 and they will tell you that Wallaby supporters were terrific to them. I was lucky to experience what remains the greatest rugby spectating experience of my life when seeing Australia snatch the 1991 RWC quarter final from Ireland in the last minute. Their fans afterwards were memorable.
So inconclusion, accept what your saying but be assured if your looking for cheerful support and acknowlegement from other fans and teams, then I’m afraid The Roar (which by the way IMO has a generally high standard of debate) and other online rugby sites aint the place to be.
Go the Reds, personally I thought they did us proud in 2012 and already can’t wait for next year.

Peter Weir – Truman Show, Gallipoli, Dead Poets Society, Master and Commander….
Bruce Beresford – Puberty Blues, Breaker Morant, Driving Miss Daisy…
Phillp Noyce – Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, Rabbit-proof Fence, Salt….
Simon Wincer – Free Willy, Phar Lap, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man…
George Miller – Mad Max, Happy Feet
Mel Gibson – Braveheart
Chris Noonan – Babe
Scott Hicks – Shine
The conference isn’t too bad, there is a best film oscar and a few nominees in there.

Secondly, because Quade Cooper is impossible not to hate (unless you are a Queenslander, but then you probably can’t read this comment).
Lastly, because your state produced Kevin Rudd.

Good first up article Irene, a prelude to your rugby board article no doubt
The mindset of the Reds is always different when Quade Cooper’s on the paddock. Actions speak louder than words and having someone with the skills of Cooper tends to inspire the others to perform so well. You see this time and time again with the Crusaders having Richie McCaw and Dan Carter and the inspiration the others gain from their presence. I doubt the All Blacks would have been the same team at the WC had Richie not played on with what was a fairly debilitating foot injury.
You will find the majority of negative comments concerning the Reds revolved around the fact they were elevated from 6th to 3rd due to the Conference System. The same would have occurred had it been a Kiwi or SA side. It’s just that the Roarers in general see the system as floored and so espouse these feelings, in this case, this year, toward the Reds.
If you thought the comments thus far were disappointing, it’s a good thing the Reds didn’t win and then go on to beat the Chiefs and set up a final appearance. If this had have been the case, and they won, it would have been the most undeserving win in the history of rugby. This year it was the Reds, any one of the 15 teams could well be in the same situation next year.
Anyway, I look forward to reading how the ARU Board’s newest member can influence the development of the game moving forward.

Internet blog sites are the digital version of talkback radio.
You don’t listen to talkback radio or read opinion sites about sport for rational and moderate views. They are definitely in the minority and usually get lost amongst the extreme views, personal attacks, baiting and trolling.
I remember after the world cup final last year, there were many posts complaining that NZ only won because of ineffectual and lax refereeing from Craig Joubert, that we were lucky and choked (don’t quite understand that one as we won). One Kiwi posted an empassioned response to the lack of grace and goodwill by some and there were those who agreed and apologised and others who chose to single him out for even more attention. That’s just the way it rolls in the arena of public opinion.
I’ve learned not to fuel this behaviour by trying to avoid personal attacks, not responding to any directed at myself and to try and argue from a position of knowledge and facts rather than memory, and prejudice.
That doesn’t mean that I’m immune to criticisms or making mistakes but being a long term member of this site, you get to learn and recognise the behaviours of regular posters.

It is a valid point several people above make. All online communities are essentially the “wild west” (or the Lord of the Flies if you prefer) when it comes to human behaviour. It is worth remembering though that a lot of the posters here on the Roar are really very intelligent and articulate – witness the well reasoned debate in the first of The Werewolf’s recent articles (http://www.theroar.com.au/2012/07/20/dingo-deans-wallabies-stats-part-one/). Learning which posts to avoid responding to is the only real way to keep your blood pressure down (or you can do what I do and just go postal once every few weeks – the Roar will ‘moderate’ the post anyway – although that is probably not the most mature way to go about it).
The most important rule of internet forums (which this is, albeit framed as comments on news stories) is that no-one ever wins an argument on the internet and no-one ever gets the last word in an internet discussion (except perhaps moderator who locks the thread).

TBF it was our fellow aussie roar’ers who started this nonsense with picking apart the captains speech. It reached fever pitch after the 2nd ireland v nz test and now all the kiwi roar’ers are firing back with glee regarding genia’s performance in the last few weeks.
Personally I couldn’t care less what the captain says straight after the game, they are rugby players not politicians, who bloody cares.
If I was going to criticise mccaw for anything after that test it would be the cheap shot he put on darcy, much more damage caused by that errant knee than cooper’s little love tap last year, yet dead silence from the self righteous types who have been questioning QC’s character ever since.
The difference between Mccaw’s act and QC’s is that a) McCaw is Kiwi royalty and b) his smart enough to do it during play.
But anyone with half a brain would know he had no intention of catching the kick off.

Maybe he felt D’Arcy was obstructing his path, I don’t know. Did you think Dagg was trying to intentionally injure Kearney? Was McCaw eye gouged? What happened to Rory Best’s eye or Adam Thomson’s neck? Seems like there was a lot more going on in that test than met the eye.
