Roar build towards A-League dynasty

The pre-season might be just two weeks old but Brisbane have already begun long-term contract talks with players in a bold bid to ensure an A-League dynasty.
New Roar coach Rado Vidosic has wasted no time after taking over the reins from Ange Postecoglou, tweaking their championship-winning style with a more direct, attacking twist for 2012-13.
But the Brisbane mentor hopes to make the biggest difference off the field as he bids to lock in as many players as he can to build on their remarkable success.
“We want to keep as many as possible so we have decided to negotiate with them right away, even though it is just a couple of weeks into the pre-season,” he told AAP.
“These players have been part of our culture for the last couple of years and we don’t want to change that.
“We want to keep the core group – not for just one more year but two or three.
“We want to reward players for their achievements and their loyalty.
“If we do that, we can develop a very good culture at the club. We want to build toward a dynasty.”
Vidosic said they would start by locking in long-term deals for their leadership group of captain Matt Smith, Shane Stefanutto, Michael Theoklitos and Erik Paartalu.
“They dictate everything. You can train all you want but, if you don’t have a good leadership group to show the way, you may not be successful,” Vidosic said.
“We need those players. Hopefully, we can get all of them.”
Finally handed the reins after assisting previous head coaches Miron Bleiberg, Frank Farina and the championship-winning Postecoglou, Vidosic is not afraid to finetune the Roar style.
The arrival of South Korean under-20 international Do Dong-Hyun alongside the likes of Ben Halloran and Henrique has Vidosic confident that fans can see a more aggressive Brisbane on show in 2012-13.
“We have a lot of speed down the flanks so we can use that,” he said.
“We want to be as dominant as ever but we will try and play a more smarter game.
“We want to be as patient as we have been in the past two seasons but, sometimes, we will want to get the ball down as fast and as hard as we can – it will be exciting to watch.”
Asked if he felt pressure stepping into Postecoglou’s big shoes, Vidosic said: “There is always pressure but, at the moment, I don’t feel any.
“We are taking steps toward how we want to play (but) it will be up to the players.
“If our preparation is right, I am sure we will be one of the contenders for the championship.”

I’m a die hard rugby fan first and foremost but I do watch the A-League so take what i say as completely unknowledgeable.
TV negotations are just beginning with the major tv channels in Australia. Why not negotate a “development and advancement” clause as part of the TV package – effectively – whatever tv station comes onboard and hires the A-League rights for the next 5-years should be encouraged to provide an additoinal 10million or so dollars over 5 years for marquee player purchase these players would remain under contract to the FAA and can be sub-let to a club for the duration of the contract. These players will be paid more and serve 2 functoins 1. To play the game and 2. to be used by the tv station in promotional advertising under whatever conditions the contract between the FAA and TV station to promote the profile of the game.
So far the TV stations has had a hands off approach to enhansing the products they lease the rights too, and some serious incentives would need to be provided to get them onboard with the idea. I’ve no idea what incentives could be offered but I’m sure there has to be something that the TV stations would want to make it workable.
The benefits are obvious – Clubs would not have to pay a fortune for marquee players – new up and coming top players MIGHT be encouraged not to leave for Europe if they can make a great deal in Australia and the competition would be improved without breaking the back of the clubs. This would also give the FAA more leverage over where these top players could be spread.
Anyway its just another dumb idea from a rugby supporter.

Not such a dumb idea, as a lifelong football fan I’ve been saying this for a while now on the Roar. 10 million over 5 years though is peanuts for any decent marquee player, considering the worldwide opposition we have (Ie Tim Cahill to MLS Drogba ,Anelka to China, anybody to a Middle East club).
The key is if somebody else(TV company) is going to pay for it(marquee player) its more likely to happen than if left to an A-League club, simply because they don’t have the moolah.
You would need to be fair though across the board for 10 A-League clubs at least an extra 20 million dollars a year extra(2million per club) would have to see their way to the FFA(BTW).
So the chances of doing a worthwhile job on it ,rather than an half-arsed one are slim.
Still one can dream.
Getting onto the Roar, good to see Rado planning ahead. How much Planning ahead Ange did it at the Roar who knows, depends of course on how long & how much he had Victory in mind.
Rado on the other hand can truly claim to be part of the club being on board since season one. Therefore no surprise he’s trying to sign up key players long term.
Early days yet but it sounds like Do Dong-Hyun could be another astute signing. There was talk after the Olympic win of Roar not passing around the box from side to side, but trying to be more direct when outside the oppositions penalty area.
If this proves to be the case I for one welcome a bit of mixing up the play in this area as under Ange IMO the Roar were totally predictable.

Rabid Brisbane supporter since the outset (tho still way too embarrassed by the nickname to ever use it…) but I must admit, much as I loved the last 2 seasons by Brisbane, I too was frustrated close to death at times with the seemingless endless side to side passing. At least I was, until it finally clicked with me halfway through last season, how integral this tactic was to their total game plan.
When Brisbane chose to hit the allerator pedal from time to time during games, they had no-one who could touch them, but it is physically impossible to keep that tempo of game going for 90 mins, so how to overcome that? Simple, play keep ball back and forth across the park while your players get their breath back, then – hit the pedal again.
If you happen to open up a gap in the opposition defence in the meantime and thread one through – all the better.
Brisbane have been – without contention – the fittest club in the league over the last 2 seasons (combined with having at least 2 of probably the 3 best players the league has ever seen) and with exactly the same fitness and conditioning team on board this year (Ange had nothing to do with this) – you can be reasonably certain that they will remain so for the season to come. Particularly bearing in mind that it seems the only new signings Rado is making are even yournger and faster players than Brisbane already had.
So go for it Rado. The pre-season is off to a great start. Here’s to another stellar season of new benchmark levels of football out of Brisbane once again.

Perhaps Smith is a good leader. Personally I don’t see that much greatness in the rest of his game. I hope he and his pairing improves this season.
