Genia praises new All Blacks halfback
Related coverage
Australia halfback Will Genia has paid New Zealand counterpart Aaron Smith a huge compliment, declaring he has added a new dimension to rugby’s world champion team.
The 22-year-old Highlanders star made his international debut in June, starting in all three All Blacks’ wins over Ireland.
He could lineup directly against Genia in the back-to-back Tests between the Wallabies and the All Blacks in the opening two rounds of the inaugural Rugby Championship next month.
“They (New Zealand) have been the best in the world for so long for a number of reasons,” said Genia, on Thursday after he won the Australian Super Rugby player of the year award.
“Having watched their series against Ireland, I really like the way Aaron Smith plays.
“I think he adds a new dimension to their play because he gets to the breakdowns quickly.
“He’s got a great pass and gives then that extra speed in attack, which they probably don’t need but they have the luxury of now.
“They will pick up where they have left off, as they always do.
“They will be very tough and it will be a big ask to get on top of them but you wouldn’t have it any other way.”

KB – has a stack of flair, needs to work more on his fundamentals of clearing the ball quickly and accurately. His clearance and habit of taking steps is far behind the other two you mentioned.

i’d like to see KB behind an AB’s pack. agree with u Justin2 bout KB taking steps before passing but ths is a running HB’s tactic. if your like aaronSmith then yeah u clear it right away but if your like KB and piri then you want to survey your options first and decide on the fly whether your going to link with your backs or pick out a back thats running a line into a gap.
sure kb doesnt clear as cleanly or quickly as aSmith (mind u no one does) but he has a lot to offer in his general reading of the game and thinking on the fly.

KB can clear the ball quickly when he wants. He has done it plenty of times for the Chiefs this year. He is a real threat ball in hand with his strong running, will make a great partner for Smith or Perenara.

There is no doubt the extra speed from around the ruck will add a new dimension to the All Black attack, they have a half back that is very similar to Genia in that regard.
The All Blacks for some time however have played a bigger more robust scrum half whom almost acted as another loose forward. This option has been very handy in the Tri-Nations format particularly against the big South African Teams. Be interesting to see how they adapt their play to suit a faster less rugged scrum half.

Have you watched much of TJ Perenara for the Canes WQ? He fits that mould and then some. Barnstorming on the run and an aggressive defender. He will be a great All Black. Imagine him relieving Aaron Smith as an impact player about 50/60 minutes in.

Agreed Riccardo, it is an embarrassment of riches for the All Blacks at scrum half. I quite like TJ Perenara and thought he may have got a go in front of Aaron Smith. Hanson was possibly looking to change the way they attack and went with Smith. They both are fantastic options and will have Ker-Barlow breathing down their necks all the way.

IMO Kerr-Barlow is not fighting for a spot, it’s Perenara and Smith who will be competing for the one spot and Kerr-Barlow gets the other.
He is the perfect impact halfback and a very strong tackler. TJ Perenara won’t be rushed in because he still needs to work on his pass. Smith and KB will be the All Blacks 1 and 2 by the end of the year.

Not sure that’s the tenor DS.
For me anyway, he remains the incumbent and starting choice for his pass alone. That quick service at Test level is irreplaceable. As another poster noted he is fast to the ruck or maul as well.
“KB and Perenara are in a fight to dislodge Weepu”. There’s some truth to this and Kuruki’s assessment that it will initially be KB given Perenara’s injury and the fact he needs to continue to develop his passing game also has some gravitas.
Perenara will get his shot though; he’s too good not to…

SBW is not a like for like swap for conrad. what conrad does on the field SBW cant replicate and what we need is a thinking cente that cleans up all the holes in the back line and a good reader of the game. as good as SBW is he’s a power runner and not a thinker.

KPM
The All Blacks priority has always been about winning games but they’re also not above doing things to suit them when the circumstances demand it as they have demonstrated previous form in bending rules and conventions.
In 1993 Mike Brewer was selected as a reserve ahead of Liam Barry for the All Blacks on their end of year tour when they suffered loose forward injuries. Brewer wasn’t touring with the team, he was only there in his role with Coca Cola who were one of the All Blacks sponsors. Barry was devastated and the public were outraged by Mains bringing in someone outside of the touring squad when they had a fully fit player available. Mains excuse was that he didn’t believe Barry was physically ready to compete against the bigger UK loose forwards.
In 1997 Zinzan Brooke announced his retirement and departure for Harlequins ahead of their end of year tour. While nobody begrudged him from touring as a fitting send off, there were many who questioned the wisdom of not picking a developing player ahead of him as there was no immediate replacement for Brooke and his domestic form was not as strong as in previous seasons.
In 2009 the NZRU exercised their discretion in allowing Luke McAlister to be named as a replacement for the injured Richard Kahui when he hadn’t played a local game on his return from Sale which was against NZRU eligibility rules.
Technically SBW is an incumbent All Black and available for selection until he starts his new contract in Japan at the end of August.

That is the Robbie Deans school of selection. Weaken two areas to strengthen one.
I know that everyone thinks it’s just one positional change what difference can it make, but Carter can’t exert the same kind of influence in games from 12 as he can at 10. He won’t be calling the shots from 10 and won’t have his hands on the ball as often or at the right time to make decisions about whether to kick for field position, pass or run.
It never worked when they tried this with Donald at 10 and it’s not a slight on Donald’s playing ability in comparison to Cruden.
Nonu at 13 would force them to change their backline moves as he’s either used to penetrate in closer or to act as a decoy when playing at 12 because he attracts defenders. Centre is more of a distributing role for the All Blacks so again you would be playing away from Nonu’s strengths as he wouldn’t be as involved in attacking plays from wider out and when he is, it’s to distribute the ball to the back three.
I like Darwin’s suggestion of Ben Smith at centre, he offers similar abilities and playing style to Conrad or Tamati Ellison.
They just need to strike the right balance in midfield, Nonu and Smith, SBW and Smith work well because it’s a balanced combination. Nonu and Fruean wouldn’t work as well compared to Nonu and Ellison.

And it was more about bring cruden into the game as he is the form 10 of the tournament.
But what do you think is the timeline for when cruden becomes starting 10 and carter is phased out, how many more years do you think carter has left at the top. I only realised a week ago that he is 30, didnt realise he was so old.

I think it’s a more a question of form rather than time.
Carter for the first time in his career has a worthy challenger for his position, so far he hasn’t put a foot wrong for the All Blacks this year and you can’t dismiss 9 years of test experience aside like last night’s nappies. As long as he’s playing well he should remain first choice.
The selectors will probably play Cruden in tests against the second tier sides to build his experience and introduce him as an impact sub in the RC. Naturally he’s first choice if Carter is injured or when he takes his next sabbatical.

Balance is essential but i think people are quick to sell Nonu short when it comes to what he does on the rugby field. Most people still talk about him as if he is just a powerful crash-ball runner used to break the line or run decoy. This could not be further from the truth, in fact i would go as far as saying Nonu is now more of a distributor then he is a line-breaker.
I’m not saying he is not still a devastating runner but i really think his game is more developed now and has been for a few years. His pass is actually brilliant. His vision has improved remarkably as he often finds the target after making a half break.
People say SBW / Nonu would not be balanced, i say it would because both are balanced players, they don’t lack distribution skills they are just used in more physical roles because they are good at it. Nonu has one of the better passes in the All Black side imo. He has matured so much as a player that he could comfortably alter his role to suit the team.
Ellison seems to be put in the same category as Conrad Smith but i would actually rate Nonu a better distributor. A strong running game is a massive part of what Ellison brings to the table aswel as a good rugby brain.
Cruden has come alongway in the past 12 months and he has the maturity in his game now to control a test match. I have no issue with him running the show with Carter at 12 but i would guess Ellison to 13 would be the first option taken.

Nonu is a much better player when outside Carter.
I also agree about Cruden and my points about Carter’s lack of influence from 12 wasn’t a potshot at Cruden’s inability to control a game either.
Cruden is the heir apparent and form 10 in NZ, Carter is the incumbent and still playing well. We should enjoy this luxury while we can.

I loathe the notion of DC playing anywhere other than 10 unless we are in a match-day situation where injuries necessitate such a move.He is a run-of-the-mill 2nd 5 whereas at 10 he’s pretty handy
Whilst I’m into ‘loathing’ I would also hate to see Williams brought back to somehow cover for Conrad.Firstly,on principle-he is gone-leave him gone.Secondly…he isn’t a 13 anyway.Pick Ellison or whoever is deemed next in line.
Finally,to balance the ledger—Loved Riccardo’s ” See how hard it is to replace someone of Conrad’s calibre KPM?
