The Chiefs held on to topple Super Rugby playoff masters the Crusaders 20-17 in Hamilton on Friday night to book a place in just their second final.
A brutal, nerve-jangling semi-final at Waikato Stadium was won by a more desperate Chiefs side, who harried their fancied rivals into mistakes while scoring two tries to one.
They held onto a three-point lead over the final quarter and a capacity crowd of 25,000 heaved a sigh of relief when Crusaders five-eighth Dan Carter missed a chance to send the game into extra time with a stray long-range penalty.
Sonny Bill Williams, playing against his former team, showed what a loss he will be to New Zealand rugby.
His display of power running was a standout while the Chiefs pack stood strong in some brutal exchanges up front after being eclipsed when the teams last met three weeks ago.
They were stinging in defence, an area where the Crusaders were unusually poor, failing to handle the bursts of Williams and slick five-eighth Aaron Cruden.
Cruden and Carter traded early penalties before prop Sona Taumalolo gave the Chiefs a lead in the 26th minute that they weren’t to relinquish, burrowing over in typical style for his ninth try of the campaign.
Flanker Liam Messam was the recipient of a super Williams offload to storm over soon afterwards and it took a try to centre Ryan Crotty on the stroke of halftime to keep the visitors in the game at 17-11 down.
Carter’s two penalties after the break pulled them closer while Cruden slotted a lone penalty in the second spell.
It was just the third appearance in a semi-final for the Chiefs, compared to the 14th for the Crusaders.
The Crusaders have reached the semi-finals for four straight years but failed to add to their seven championships.
The Chiefs must await the outcome of the all-South African semi-final in Cape Town on Sunday morning (AEST) to learn their opposition and venue for next weekend’s final.
They will play the top-qualifying Stormers in Cape Town or host the Sharks.

The Chiefs were top NZ qualifier and were 1-1 vs the Crusaders this season previously. How was this an upset?

Form?

There’s not a lot between them in terms of form to make that call. Both lost to the Canes (courtesy of a few iffy ref’s calls in both cases….) and the previous match went down to the wire and could have easily been a Chiefs win.

I don’t disagree with you, but I made the Crusaders favourites. The Chiefs were playing on the back of two losses, the Crusaders had just won at the Chiefs (and I know that SBW butchered a try etc), and the Chiefs pack hadn’t gone too well in the set piece. Also, the Chiefs rested last week whereas the Crusaders had comfortably dispatched the Bulls and had had a run out. The Crusaders also have a lot of big match experience, whereas the Chiefs don’t.

Look at the Crusaders finals history. This qualifies as an upset.

Don’t think the headline means the result was an upset – which really it wasn’t …. although the bookies had it completely wrong in realty thie chiefs were always going to be hard to beat …. Rennie really is fast becoming a vital part of NZ rugby going forward

JERRY,exactly right;the dubitative crusader stars/strengths should encourage deans as he prepares for test season.Local derbies are close encounters and add in all black selection and a super 15 title and motivation is revitalised.IM surprised at the unanimous vote for a crusaders victory;this game was as the score suggests always going to be close.

The Crusaders were always pushing uphill once Romano went off. Read and Romano are the grunt of that pack.

Fantastic to see the Cheifs win. This means a new winner in super rugby which is good for the game.
Also good to see the team that plays hard, physical, but mainly honest rugby beat the cynical cheats.
I am amazed what the crusaders get away with and how often they infringe.
Cheifs played really well. Yes SBW will be missed. Cruden easily outplayed Carter. McCaw has slowed up a lot.

Fair enough points, although McCaw has slowed he seems to be a lot stronger at the contact area.
This year I’ve seen him break more tackles then the rest of his career. He’s the go to man for hit ups with Read not there.
He might end up playing 6-8 for the All Blacks

it really is an art form.
fall behind the ruck, instead of rolling clear try to get up where you are and the other team will clean you out into their own ruck and slow down their own possession.

Extraordinary show of confidence by the Chiefs. In the second half they repeatedly kicked the ball back to a team that thrives on counter-A Rugby and then shut them down. The last minutes where the Crusaders forwards were pushed back in possession says it all, the Chiefs knew they had a better team. Not an upset at all because history hasn’t much to do with this season’s results and on form the Chiefs were the team to beat. Latimer was everywhere.
Note on the scrums. Tall front rowers who don’t work on a very deep crouch will fail. They must be in a position to be rising at the engagement to ensure they don’t hinge, can keep their backs straight to transfer their power. However this means their legs will not be in their most powerful stance. We are a game for all shapes and sizes and to try and cut out the squat dynamos is not good for Rugby.
Joubert proved all the critics wrong. He was totally balanced, calm even, though he should have gone to his pocket he resisted.

The Chiefs played rugby the way the game is suppose to be played, wonderful game to watch, great to see the ref not being intimidated by McCaw.

The game was very physical, incredibly so. Thought Crusaders got the rub of the green but as many guessed during the season they aren’t the team of yesteryear. I find the game quite loose and very scrappy with plenty of willingness but lacking much structure.
Be interested to see the SA derby – a good performance by the Stormers may see the trophy in SA this year. The Chiefs will have to lift another gear or two tp win in SA IMO
