St Kilda’s slim final eight hopes go on the line this afternoon when they host Western Bulldogs at Etihad. We’ll have live scores from the commencement at 3.15pm AEST.
It was by no means vintage football, but midway through the final quarter against the ladder-leading Sydney Swans last week, St Kilda trailed by less than two goals and looked a genuine chance to snatch the four points.
Unfortunately for the Saints, Sydney hit the afterburners shortly after and won by 29 points in the end, but the performance demonstrated that St Kilda are able to cut it with a genuine premiership contender.
On paper, this afternoon’s assignment looks considerably easier. The Bulldogs have lost five in a row and after a bright start to the season are now well and truly planning for 2013.
Despite uncertainty surrounding his future next season, Saints midfielder Brendan Goddard will celebrate his 200th AFL appearance this afternoon, and it should provide a further lift for an already-motivated St Kilda outfit.
They’ll come into this one without any major injuries, with only Jason Blake and Rhys Stanley unavailable. The Bulldogs look to be without the services of Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney as well as a string of other injured players.
At 8-8, the Saints look outside chances at best for a top-eight berth at season’s end but with a strong percentage (117.23) would move above Carlton into tenth, four points outside eighth spot. It should be enough for the Sainters to win, and win well this afternoon.
