West Coast will be looking to get their finals run back on track as they host the Brisbane Lions at their home, Patersons Stadium. There’s live scores kicking off at 4.40pm AEST (2.40pm local time)
The last fortnight is something the Eagles fans would love to forget. Their fortress wall came tumbling down to a quick Sydney Swans, while they offered little against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.
There’s no doubt that coach John Worsfold would have had a stern word to many of the players, who lacked any of the zip or flare that we saw from them in the opening half of the season.
He would have had a sterner talk though to the likes of Quinten Lynch and Luke Shuey – both players suspended recently. The Eagles cannot afford to lose any more of their players to suspension for the rest of the season with the way the injury toll has crept up on them.
They also know they come against a team that beat them last time around. The Lions stuck with West Coast all day back in Round 10 at the Gabba and managed to run the Eagles down in the final quarter.
But with Brisbane’s performance last week leaving a lot to be desired, it looks more likely the Eagles will get a much needed win.
Shuey comes back for the Eagles, while Josh Hill gives the team some much needed spark in the forward line that’s been missing for the last couple of matches.
Brisbane on the other hand scrapped their way to a win last week against the Gold Coast Suns. But it’s hard to really talk up the win – it was an ugly game of football with far too many errors from both teams.
The question remains whether that’s just a blight on the run home, or whether it’s a true sign of where the Lions team is at.
It was the midfield brigade that led Brisbane to their stunning win a couple of months ago, with the likes of Jed Adcock, Tom Rockliff and Daniel Rich all playing stellar matches.
But it’s the consistency that’s been lacking for most of the season for those three as well as some of the other midifielders.
Having said that, there’s been some good new talent that’s been brought into the lineup of late including Dayne Zorko (who’s a gun) and Elliot Yeo
What’s incredible is the statistics that favour the Brisbane Lions – winning six of the last seven against the Eagles, winning more games in the last five this season (West Coast 2-3, Brisbane 3-2) and the fact the Patersons Stadium isn’t that much of a hoodoo ground as it is for others (Brisbane has won two of their last three there).
Could a surprise be on the cards this afternoon?
