ARLC to look at stand-alone Origin
Related coverage
Acting ARLC chief executive Shane Mattiske says the prospect of a stand-alone State of Origin competition will be considered by the commission for next season.
Queensland coach Mal Meninga and NSW skipper Paul Gallen on Thursday echoed calls from Melbourne’s Craig Bellamy and Canterbury’s Des Hasler for players not to have to back up from Origin for their clubs.
Speaking at the launch of the NRL’s Close The Gap Indigenous round, Mattiske conceded the Commission will need to look at the issues raised.
“We’ve always been focused on ensuring we have Origin right,” Mattiske said.
“That means getting the balance right to get the best product for our fans, both at the grounds and on TV, and that includes managing the loads on our players.
“It’s something we are looking at, and it’s something that will be reviewed with the new broadcast deal.”
Gallen, who returns to action for Cronulla for the first time since Origin this weekend after an injury sustained in game three, said it’s become too hard for players to turn out for their clubs and state in the same week.
“I never thought it before, but now I think it should be,” Gallen said on Thursday.
“You see how many players have come out struggling and it is only going to get faster and stronger. It deserves its own weekend.
“It’s best for the players that you don’t back up after three or four days. It’s too hard mentally and physically.”
Meninga concurred with the Blues captain and said player welfare has to be the biggest consideration for the commission.
“This series in particular, I haven’t seen one as physical or more demanding,” Meninga said.
“They have to start making sure the welfare of the players is paramount and look at ways where they’re rested and that clubs aren’t inconvenienced by it.
“I’m in favour of stand-alone if they can get the scheduling right.”
North Queensland chief executive Peter Jourdain also gave backing to the idea.
The Cowboys lost four key players in last year’s series and Jourdain said it’s hard to sell games to fans when the side are without their star names.
“We understand there are pluses and minuses for both, but our players would be in favour of a stand-alone weekend,” Jourdain told AAP.
“It’s definitely harder for us commercially without the Origin guys playing, so I think the stand-alone would be better for everybody.”
Mattiske, who took over from the deposed David Gallop in June, was non-committal when asked about the prospect of keeping the job permanently.
“It’s a great challenge and I am really enjoying it, the game is in great shape and it’s a good time to be involved,” Mattiske said.
“I am simply focused on doing my best in this short timeframe.
“There is a process in place for the recruitment of the new CEO. It’s being managed by a professional firm and they’ll work through that appropriately.”
“It is something that is being worked through via the committee.”
Mattiske was equally evasive about the progress of the broadcast deal which is still to be announced, with corporate fixers Greenhill Caliburn dealing with the negotiations.
“We’re absolutely making progress, it’s a very important thing that we must achieve to keep the game’s future strong and build for our future,” he said.
“There is no definite timetable we are working to and it will be done as soon as possible.”

We have to look at player welfare ,,what a load of ,,all they have been looking at is the dollars ,,if they were serious we wouldn’t be still talking about what fans and players have known for years ,,i think that every ARLC Exec should have to read the Roar on a weekly bases that way they would know whats going on and how majority feel ..Standalone weekends you think thats a good idea ,,oh please !! How long has it taken these Bozo ‘s to come out and say it ,,and now they might look at it ..Don;t just look at it fix it !!

Paddy, it all comes down to negotiating the contract, tell the TV people what you want and go from there, I bet you the TV people will fight over each other to get league. All the league wants is full control of TV
scheduling rights

Dayer you are correct they will fall over backwards to put the best sporting event on their network ,,and we have to stop selling ourselves short and stand up and get what we want instead of being told how it will be …

PaddyBoy we have the best sport in the world ,,why do we let the tv networks dictate how we do things ,,mate if you had it on the weekends many who could not go would ,,why does it always have to be about the tv ratings,,but quite frankly i dont think it would change a thing if you played it on a Saturday night the ratings would be the same ..And where is your proof that substantiate your view that wed guarantees the highest possible ratings ?

Drop the Trans Tasman test as really all internationals should be at end of season.
Also the NZ vs Australia ‘A’ match is rubbish, what is left of Australia ‘A’ if all the NSW and QLD players are unavailable? If NZ got beat it would look bad. Better to have the NZ Origin match, starting as a one off, it could develop in time to a 3 match series to complement SoO better.

I think its great to see so many people favoring stand-alone weekend. I think its a great idea and WIN-WIN for everyone. The trick will be to choose the most lucrative timeslot. Saturday night means you can party hard and not worry about work the next day. But sunday night will have more viewers available.
The NRL will see average crowd numbers jump if they go for weekend Origin.

As much as I don’t disagree it is up to whoever owns the TV rights period. If they want the origin games played on DEC 25 and they are will willing the pay the bill that is when it will get played.

I think moving State of origin to the weekend would be very foolish and the tv ratings which as we know are very important would drop dramitically. Think about it this year we had great tv ratings in Melbourne and also NZ. Do you think we would get the same ratings if Collingwood were to play St Kilda or the Auckland Blues were to play the Crusaders at the same time as State of Origin.
Also people tend to go out more on the weekends to restraunts etc so we would be losing these viewers as well. At the moment State of origin is bigger than RL itself. What I mean by that is a lot of people that are passionate about state of origin yet they could not tell you anything about the game outside of origin. They could not tell you who are last years premiers, who the world cup champions are. The only game of RL they watch is state of origin.
Please keep origin as it is. Do not try and fix something that is not broken. State of origin is a growing success why try and change it.

I suggest to you that ppl dont go out to restaurants as much on sunday or monday nights. Other possible timeslots for Origin. Origin isnt broke, youre right, but the club games are during Origin.
Origin has its own gravity, it can move and ppl will follow.
Hell, even tuesday nite would be better.

it’s about clubs. as a fan I hate it when my club the Broncs SOO players cant play their NRL match before the game and have to back up after SOO. It is a bloody joke for us fans and for that matter, the Sponsors to pay good money to see our reps not playing or are under duress after the SOO. Hope the ARLC negotiate a great contract and also take full control for TV match scheduling.
At this current contract we the fans are getting robbed off game telecast. ie . no FTA on Saturdays and live game on Sunday, also too many lower quality teams (ie. eels and roosters) telecast on Fridays and Sundays
I am confident that the new deal is going to be awesome for league where we will have live telecast on FTA Fri to Mon. (one live game each day is excellent, any more might be too much)

What is this obsession with the TV ratings dropping on Saturday night? What footy fan wouldn’t want to get together at home, throw a BBQ with their mates, watch the game and enjoy the night?
What footy fan with kids wouldn’t rather their kids staying up late on a Saturday night?
What out of town fans wouldn’t prefer to travel into town to go the game when they can make a weekend of it?
How do we know there aren’t thousands of people who give it a miss on Wednesdays as they have to roll out of bed at sparrow’s fart to go to work?
Please.

This is where the Player’s Association has to grow a pair, stand up & do it’s job!!! The fans are also crying foul over the ‘SOO effect’ on their club teams. Petero who is the president and this organization don’t realize how much power the players have and recognize that SOO is nothing without the fans and the players. A strong united front by the players with the will power to take it all the way to a player strike will do the trick!

Tru Blu Baby,
To do what ? Give Origin it’s own weekend, ensuring the GWS Giants have a clear run in the media at the Sunday game ? Make sure every Origin player has a week off after, to cripple their club team winning a premiership ? What do you want the players union to do ?
