The Wallabies will look to settle on Pat McCabe’s replacement at No.12 as soon as possible as Robbie Deans weighs up the best way to rein in All Blacks powerhouse Sonny Bill Williams.
However, coaching coordinator Tony McGahan says the selection will be more about how Australia want to play in the first two Bledisloe Cup Tests rather than reacting to the dangers of SBW.

Australia are hopeful McCabe (leg stress fracture), James O’Connor (hamstring) and Wycliff Palu (shoulder) will be available for the third Test of the Rugby Championship against the Springboks in Perth on September 8.
But in the meantime, the Wallabies face the enormous task of winning back the Bledisloe for the first time in a decade without two of their key backline stars.
Despite the loss in experience, McGahan says the belief is still there.
Deans is known to be a fan of McCabe’s direct running, and tough NSW midfielder Rob Horne will be considered for a switch from outside centre to No.12 if the coach is trying to create a replica.
Some backline juggling could see Berrick Barnes or Adam Ashley-Cooper marking up against SBW, while inexperienced Queenslanders Ben Tapuai and Mike Harris remain in the frame.
With the opening Bledisloe Test in Sydney on August 18, McGahan confirmed a decision would have to be made soon.
“You want to be giving players the opportunity to train there and then be able to settle on that and give the whole team and the individual time … and confidence,” said McGahan from a training camp in Sydney on Thursday.
“Our primary focus will be how we want to play and how we want to defend. We’ll look at the make-up of what they’re going to come with, but it’s what we want to deliver more so than what the opposition want to throw at us.”
Quade Cooper will play club rugby this weekend for Souths in Brisbane, as he fights to get enough game-time under his belt to be considered for the No.10 jersey.
If Cooper gets the nod to start in Sydney, or if Kurtley Beale is brought from fullback into the frontline, Barnes could find himself back at No.12 where he played most of last year’s World Cup as a secondary playmaker.
Ashley-Cooper is used to being the Wallabies Mr Fix It and says he’d be ready if required to defuse Williams.
“I approach any position the same – it’s just a different number on your back … we’ve got a lot of versatility in this backline which is great. Whoever steps up will do a great job,” said Ashley-Cooper, who believes the Wallaby training camps have them on track to break their hoodoo against the All Blacks.
“It’s hard to know if (Williams) will play 12 or 13 knowing Conrad Smith is out. Who knows if it’s going to be Ma’a Nonu or SBW at 12?
“In itself, that’s a challenge facing one of the best centres in the world.”
Brumbies star McCabe says his stress fracture could be the result of a long season.

Anyone but the “tough” Horne – although to be fair, he did not get injured in Super Rugby this year. Why Waratah mediocrity always gets rewarded I will never understand.

It’s pretty simple really and the same plan works against the entire All Black squad:
Don’t give them the ball unnecessarily. Don’t kick the bloody thing to them over and over and over!

Its the guys running off him that you really need to worry about. One of his greatest attributes as a player is the fact that he draws SO much attention. Strangely this is evidenced by the fact that there are so many similar articles about this. He takes the focus off guys like Dagg and Gear who run off him. It frees up carter or cruden. It also makes him a great decoy option.
So maybe the key to containing him is not to pay him too much attention.
Or maybe try to score trys

Taps. Simple. Best centre option in Australia before his injury, and only going to get better hanging out with Wallabies set up.
He is a better carrier than Horne, a better passer, just as good defensively, and a kicking option as well.

Hoy Tapuai could be the best option but after only some minutes of Super rugby because of injury to leap up to marking SBW at test level is surely too much.

His had a month of training with the wallabies, Im sure the fitness and conditioning staff will assess him before a decision is made. The only issue would be his confidence the tackle area as he is coming back from a dislocated shoulder. Nothing a couple of gruelling tackling drill sessions wouldnt fix, just send guys like kepu, timani, higgy etc at him for 20 minutes. See how he comes up after that.

Just read on the foxsports website that Taps, QC and Jake Schatz will be playing for their club rugby this weekend to improve their match fitness.

Jutsie there’s match familiarity though from having played recently at a high level. He wouldn’t have that. Remember who he has to stop too.

In the end like any gamble its a risk vs return trade -off. Id rather we take the risk on tapuai than take the seemingly safe option of barnes, a finger or AAC.

There are no more S15 matches for him to play so its club footy and a small gamble if he comes through those games OK. Otherwise do we not play him tll next year?
Personally I think if he gets through the club games he is either 12 or 13 starting, regardless of who is injured or not.

Seconded Winston.
Although I doubt any Coach past Super Rugby level will be sucked in by that but in tiring in the heat of battle this is absolutley true. One of his great attributes becomes decoy.
“Or maybe try to score trys”.
Be careful what you wish for my friend; they’re still the Wallabies at home.

Yeah I know, One thing we may lose with Conrad and Kahui being out is the defense in that chanel. Defending at 13 is harder than it looks. I know of a couple of 12s and 15s who failed to do this well when they switched.

Tamati Ellison is a very smart and sadly over-looked player who could be very good at centre.

He’s certainly stepped up since he got back to NZ.
Then there’s Ice and Ranger who seem to play better on the wings but we have no shortage of options there.

NOT Ranger mate.
He’s had an opportunity and blown that. Worse is that he’s made no discernable gain since being axed.
It’s fair to say he has been playing in a Super Rugby team that has done nought but flounder all season apart from a brief ray of sun shine in Pretoria and the sinking of the Brumbies. However, if you assume he left the All Blacks with a mandate for improvement and you must, he is disappointing.
Ice can be brilliant but is injury prone.

Yeah he has had a shocker this year and last.
So much potential to be a distuctive force though its not looking like we are going to see it come through on recent form
I remember he startedfor the ABs against the boks, Dagg got subbed on and that’s all she wrote.

Mate fair dinkum if i had the decision i would run Ellison outside SBW in the first test. He is faster and i actually think he has a better running game then Nonu. Huge call.

The Other Steve there’s a very easy plan for the Wallabies to counter SBW’s threat for the All Blacks in the medium and long-term: watch him leave for the NRL and Japan.

Agreed KPM.
How are you BTW?
It’s been done to death on this forum but I still wonder if he’s making the right decision for HIM, long term; it is what it is.
That said, the truth of the matter is that SBW has next to no experience against the Wallabies and Boks so perhaps annointing him as the next coming and making a plan to counter that is more of a media beat up than anything else.
Like the Other Steve says above Ellison (and Ben smith) are good ball carriers and the All Blacks MAY be better served with Ma’a at I/C and Ellison at 13, given he is possibly a better defender in that difficult channel. Man, are we missing Kahui or what?
Don’t worry though KPM, Conrad will be back before you know it

RIccardo fine I hope are well too: much taken up with the Olympics now.
There’s no way at all I can think it’s a good decision for him.
The only reason I could imagine to justify it would be that he might want to play a year of NRL to make his peace with the sport that made him, IF that’s the reason why.
Otherwise there would be no reason at all and it would just be bizarre.

I have no doubt someone very good will replace him and the All Blacks could put Fruean through the same process of tightening up and controlling himself that Nonu went through, but if someone establishes himself at 12 and SBW stays away for two seasons and not one, then it’s unlikely SBW would replace the incumbent in the RWC year as he didn’t replace the incumbent Nonu. The incumbent could well have had years of building a combination with the centre outside him, as had happened with Nonu and Smith. Basically if SBW stays away only one season I think he’ll start in the RWC year, but if two, then he won’t.

Your right he will need a couple of seasons before the WC. I reckon if he came a year earlier he would have unseated Nonu.

That would still depend on who came to replace him. He might not be as good as he is now in two years anyway.
