The Chiefs will host the Sharks this week in the final of the 2012 Super Rugby season. Join us from 5.30pm AEST for all the live scores, commentary and banter for what could be a classic Super Rugby final.
This match pits two sides that play a similarly attacking style against one another. But both sides have travelled a very different path to reach this final.
The Chiefs were the front runners all year. They started well and weren’t headed until right at the end of the conference stage, after they had secured their position atop the New Zealand conference. They have also had the luxury of playing all of their rugby since May in New Zealand itself.
In contrast, the Sharks have travelled thousands of kilometres in the last couple of weeks alone. They have broken through 30,000km travelled mark in the finals series.
Their squad could be forgiven for wondering just what they have put themselves through – almost flawless against the Reds and the stronger all-round team against the Sharks last week – only to then have to fly back halfway around the world to play the Chiefs.
However when the dust settles, if they find themselves on top of the dias, I don’t think they will mind how many hours they’ve spent airborne or whether their bodies are weary.
John Plumtree hasn’t been shy making changes to the team sheet. Riaan Viljoen makes way for Springbok Pat Lambie’s return from injury, despite performing admirably last week.
The very promising Paul Jordaan is being trusted to walk straight back into the side at inside centre and will pair with JP Pietersen in the midfield.
If the backline doesn’t look as effective as in the last few weeks Plumtree will encounter lines of questioning around these selections.
To be sure, he is placing a lot of trust in Lambie epecially, as he has been out for longer than Jordaan, but I don’t think either player will make the side poorer.
No changes have been made to the team in numbers 1 through to 10, so we will again see Wilhelm Alberts provide a fourth backrower to the powerful Sharks pack.
The same 15 men that got the job done last week were good enough for Dave Rennie to name an unchanged Chiefs starting side.
The notable point is that despite being slightly in doubt earlier in the week, captain Craig Clarke will lead his men out for the most important match of the year.
On paper these sides match up quite well. In the backs Aaron Cruden and Sonny Bill Williams probably give the edge to the Chiefs. The likes of Bismark du Plessis, Keegan Daniel, Ryan Kankowski and Alberts possibly put the Sharks pack a nose in front.
Overall there is very little to separate these sides. If form is rewarded at national level a number of these faces will line up across from each other a few more times this year.
Both sides thrive a more similar playing style than would be typical of a New Zealand v South Africa match-up.
They both attack at their best on the counter. Neither will turn down a chance to score at close range with prolonged possession, but they especially enjoy a chance to attack from range with turnover ball or a poorly placed kick.
Defence is a strong feature of both sides too. While others in this competition may hit harder on occassion not many teams employ the bend but don’t break philosophy very well.
They scramble, pick their moments to counter ruck aggressively and keep strong numbers in the line.
Both semi finals finished with the winning team defending a one score lead along their own 22m line.
On both occassions trust in the pattern was employed to avoid penalties, tackles were completed without fuss and were patience displayed to wait until the right opportunity to attack the ball.
This grand final is going to be exciting. Neither side has won the competition despite reaching this very match previously. No one would begrude either fan base their first trophy to celebrate.
The Chiefs have proven themelves by setting the pace for the rest right from round one. The Sharks have displayed considerable mettle and their pressence after traveling so far cannot be understated.
Now all is left is to see which team shows themself deserving after the final 80 minutes. Join us as we cover the action from 5.35pm AEST.

Ian Jones is doing the presentation and introduces himself very enthusiastically. He thanks the refs and calls up all the Sharks players individually. Really having a tough time of the name pronunciation though haha. John Plumtree gets a good cheer from the crowd. Keegan Daniel is gracious in defeat and congratulates the Chiefs on an unbelievable performance. The players receive rapturous applause as they are individually called out to receive their commemorative mugs. Craig Clarke acknowledges the Sharks and says they should be very proud of how far they came with all their travelling. He also mention Bismark’s 100th game, nice touch Craig. He even congratulates the refs, the crowd boos them though haha. He thanks the crowd and all the support the staff. The trophy is presented by Christian Nicks from Investec and The Chiefs start their celebrations. Well done Chiefs!

Thanks Elisha and thanks everyone for reading. Look forward for a great inaugural Rugby Championship. Well done Chiefs, hope I see a few more of them playing for the All Blacks. Congrats to that Sharks as well on a stellar season and all the other teams as well. For me this has been one of the best Super Rugby season ever (maybe not for the Aussie teams though). But it was great to see the brand of rugby being championed by less fancied sides like The Cheetahs and Hurricanes causing a stir against the big guns.

The Chiefs are the 2012 Super Rugby champions and are deserved winners! Great to see a new champion and was fantastic to watch the Sharks make such a deep run into the finals from 6th place on the ladder.

Chiefs 37-6 Sharks
80′ The commentators mention a possible system where teams will have a week off before the final to make it fair. The Sharks really could’ve used that week but at the end of the day, they had to travel because they didn’t play as well as some of the other teams all through the season and got themselves 6th on the Ladder.
7:17pm
Elisha Pearce said | 7:17pm | Report comment
I’d be happy with a week off. I think teams play well enough to earn a home final and that should be kept probably. The travel has been absolutely brutal for the Sharks this year and may have cost the Crusaders the title last year too.
7:15pm
Elisha Pearce said | 7:15pm | Report comment
Can’t believe the amount of power in this Chiefs team though. They certainly have an unrivalled ability to break tackles and make 4on4 or 5on5 look like a glaring overlap out wide too. I’ve enjoyed watching them this year and Super Rugby has a worthy new Champion.

74′ The Sharks were unfortunately not at their best tonight but you can only play as well as the opposition allows. The Chiefs have been absolutely immense. They’ve bullied the Sharks into submission and while their intensity wasn’t alway applied legally the score line is still a fair reflection of the match.

Since Masaga finished this match off for good it seems like an eternity has already passed, but we still have 6min left really. Can’t imagine how painful this is for the Sharks at the moment. 73′ Messam break through from the kickoff and charges upfield. He links with Cruden then Tikiroituma but the Sharks defence does well to get back and turn it over. Viljoen is on now and clears. The Chiefs take it quick though and are really looking to finish strong here.

67′ The Sharks plug away now outside the Chiefs 22m. The Chiefs defence is fresh and enthusiastic though, they haven’t been challenged tonight and they hold firm. The Sharks again can’t control the ball and the Chiefs pounce and counter well. Its clear a few of the Sharks players have had enough over being belted by the Chiefs and are starting to rollover in contact. Even Keegan Daniel is looking intimidate by the Chiefs physicality.

I like the Sharks going wide still. They need to bring some new forwards on to create some forward momentum and their backs may be able to bring them into this again. Subs coming now actually. 3 of them. Alberts, Kankowksi and Jannie du Plessis depart.

Sharks have really picked it up now. They have the ball in the attacking half for the first time since early in the second half against the Stormers. A Michalak kick initially looked like the wrong option but Robinson was monstered by the chase and the Sharks had it again. They go no-where after that the Sharks. Thompson gets a turnover about 15 out.
Cruden’s chip kick wasn’t a good option 20-3 up. Sharks win it back and earn a penalty.

50′ Mvovo gets his first touch from a forward looking pass. Refs being consistent in not calling it. The Shakrs make in roads now but are still looking lost out wide. Something needs to be done about that, I think a media drive might just be the required way to go on that.

Weird rule that a charge-down in the goal area equals a 5m scrum for the guy who’s charge down made the ball go out. Don’t really understand how come that’s the rule. Clearly the kick wouldn’t have gone dead if it wasn’t for that guy charging it, right?

Chiefs 13-3 Sharks
Well at halftime the Chiefs have a deserved lead. The Sharks just could not get out of their own half. Their kicking was poor but the Chiefs back three are positioning themselves very well. The Chiefs look to be in control and are undaunted by the tricky conditions and seem happy to throw it around when theres space. The Sharks are struggling to keep up with the fast tempo the Chiefs are playing at. The Chiefs have used some questionable tactics off the ball but the Sharks have also got away with a few offsides in their scrambling defence. I think the floodgates will open in this second half and the Sharks defence tires.

I don’t know how fox sports to the stats for possession and territory, but it seems like they’ve possibly even got them a little more even than I thought. Even if it is accurate 36% possession is pretty brutal for the Sharks.
Lambie has been the worst on the park so far for the Sharks. That will be a question that needs answering quickly by Plumtree. I’d just put Viljoen on now.

That half was mostly the Chiefs. The Sharks had about 13 handling errors or mistakes in possession to the Chiefs 7. That stopped the Sharks from getting on the front foot and putting themselves in position to attack. Giving the ball back to the Chiefs left them defending for long stretches. It’s not over but soon they are going to have to start trying expansive attacks inside their own end as they can’t win the battle of kicking and returning it at this point.
Chiefs pack has stood up against the bigger Sharks men and that has meant they can hold the ball for multiple phases.
