Milestone win means more for GWS: Sheedy
Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy admits he lives in fairytales, but even the man who’s seen all there is to see in the AFL couldn’t have foretold the story of his 1000th game.
Sheedy’s 40 years of service in the AFL/VFL as a player and coach were honoured on Saturday when his young charges steamrolled their way to an upset 34-point win over Port Adelaide at Showground Stadium.
The four-time premiership coach, who was given a guard of honour by both teams and burst through the banner pre-match, attempted to deflect the attention.
“I live in fairytales and actually it’s very lonely because no one bothers me when I’m dreaming,” Sheedy said.
“I never think of the (milestone) games that much, but it was a monumental game for the Giants to win in the west of Sydney (for the first time).
“It’s just great for the GWS fans … (and) it’s great for the team and we’ll gain an enormous amount of confidence out of it.”
GWS ruckman Jonathan Giles, who spent four years on the Power’s list without playing a game, admitted Sheedy’s milestone had been discussed at length by his teammates.
“It’s been talked about all week and before the game we mentioned it … so it was great to get a win for him,” Giles said.
Giles, who pushed Callan Ward for best-on-ground honours, destroyed his old club with 26 hitouts, 23 disposals and two goals.
“I look forward to playing the Crows and Port because obviously it’s your hometown and I know a lot of Port guys and I stay in contact with a lot of them,” he said.
On current form, there’s every chance the Giants could challenge for more wins this year – especially when they tackle Gold Coast and Melbourne in the next fortnight.
“Well we’ll be attempting to, I mean I don’t like losing,” Sheedy quipped.
“You start somewhere … we’re playing Gold Coast next week and they’ve never beaten us and haven’t even won a game at home yet.
“So why we should we just let them walk over the top of us.”© AAP 2013
