Wallabies set for a little new blood
Related coverage
Australia selectors will stick with the tried and trusted and infuse just a little new blood into their squad for the inaugural Rugby Championship.
A squad of 30 will be announced on Tuesday as the Wallabies gear up for a campaign that starts with back-to-back matches against the world champion All Blacks in Sydney on August 18 and in Auckland the following Saturday.
New Zealand selectors named only one new cap, Blues prop Charlie Faumuina, in their 28-man squad, which included just three specialist locks.
Australian selectors have a new backline complication with Rebels winger Cooper Vuna ruled out of at least the first Championship game after suffering a shoulder injury playing for his Melbourne club on the weekend.
With Joseph Tomane already on the injured list, the selectors could call up uncapped Dom Shipperley from Queensland.
James Horwill and Dan Vickerman are sidelined by long term injuries so one uncapped lock is set be named alongside Nathan Sharpe, Rob Simmons and Sitaleki Timani.
NSW Waratah Kane Douglas and Melbourne Rebels rookie Cadeyrn Neville were the two uncapped second-rowers who participated in last week’s training camp.
A new face, or two, could also appear in the back row, where Wycliff Palu is injured and Ben McCalman has just returned from a long-term shoulder injury.
Reds youngster Jake Schatz looms as a bolter with the ability to play at blindside flanker or No.8, while exciting young openside flankers Liam Gill and Michael Hooper are contenders.
Injuries have eaten away at the depth of the props, with Salesi Maafu, Dan Palmer and Paddy Ryan all unavailable, but the established quartet of Benn Robinson, Sekope Kepu, James Slipper and Ben Alexander should all be right to go.
Vuna and Tomane apart, utilities James O’Connor and Pat McCabe are the other backs currently on the injured list.
With McCabe out, Wallabies selectors are likely to give themselves plenty of options in the inside backs.
Hard-running Queenslander Anthony Faingaa trained at inside centre at the final camp.
Mike Harris, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Ben Tapuai and Rob Horne should all make the squad and be contenders for the No.12 jersey.
Another option would be to switch Berrick Barnes from five-eighth and bring back Quade Cooper into the pivot position, now he has some match fitness.
Cooper was one of a number of Wallabies who played club rugby last weekend.
The mercurial back was in sparkling form for Souths, playing the entire match in Brisbane after missing the Reds one Super finals fixture through suspension.
In Sydney, scrum anchor Robinson played 40 minutes for Eastwood.

Is Palu fit I hope so i heard he was injured but don’t know for sure. If he is out a big blow , as mcelman is out from memory and ben mowen will have to start with samo off the bench, or Fotu Auelua. Liam gill could start and push pock to no 8 or 6, i really think Liam Gills is doing a young brad clyde or a josh kronfield or a young george smith, a place simply had to be found for him in the starting line up non negotiable.

What is the squad limit? NZ has only named 28 and Australia is going to name 30?

Different squad size limits depending on whether you are playing at home or overseas.

I understand Shipperley will be cut from the camp, as will Tapuai. Ridiculous that Horne is still there.

If that really happens, then I really have no idea what they’re looking for in players. Can anyone really imagine Horne ever being selected for the All Blacks after his performances? Disgraceful.

Seems S14 form is not one of the selection criteria. I’ve been a big fan of Samo since he was at the Brumbies but really is he a better prospect than Fotu Auelua? Do all those NSW players deserve Australian spots? Reward for effort is it? No wonder its hard to motivate them. Their form against Wales was scratchy and way short of what is needed against the Boks and Blacks. Ben Tapuai is a real prospect. Rob Horne is not. He has doubtful defense, little vision and has a habit of white line fever. Sitaleki Timani wouldn’t start for the Rebels.

Actually Jack, Timani often did not start for the Tahs, behind Dean Mumm a fair bit of the time. And he could not get a start at the Force or Brumbies when he was there.
Mitchell over Shipperley is stupid: did we learn nothing from the RWC about bringing players back before full fitness? If Mitchell gets injured again, its close to the end of his career, at least in Australia.
I can’t stand Mitchell, but fully fit he can sniff out a try. But I dont think he is fully fit.

I have never seen anything that everyone keeps praising Rob Horne for. I just cannot seem him as a good rugby player. He has done absolutely nothing of note in any game he has played for the Wallabies. Now if mediocrity is the selection bar, what makes him selected above someone like Ant Faingaa, who also hasn’t really done a great deal at national level yet, but is a much better defender. If Rob Horne hasn’t done anything, why don’t they go with Taps to see what he can do? Do they think Rob Horne can bustle his way through or around the line? He refuses to pass, so he is not going to set up his outside man either.

He wears a blue jersey; irrespective of performance that gives a player a head start on an Australian spot, for everything from schoolboy rugby to the Wallabies.

I’m a Tahs ‘fan’ and equally amazed at Horne’s selection based on his performances at S15 and test. We must have better. Surely!
He seems to have issues defensively and his inability or none preparedness to pass to a player in a better position has cost us. On that basis alone I was surprised he wasn’t dropped. I’d hate to be a winger outside him. Perhaps that’s why our wingers go looking for the ball so much these days compared to the days of Ben Tune, Rathbone & Co. Now they were true finishers.
Robbie & his coaching staff have done good things with other seemingly dud Tah players, so hopefully what ever Robbie sees in him will blossom during the tests.

I cannot for the life of me understand how Ben Tapuai missed out. The forward pack looks ok but really there should be no place for Benn Robinson. How Rob Horne continually gets picked is also something i can’t work out.
OUT IN
Benn Robinson Salesi Manu
Rob Horne Ben Tapuai
Nick Phipps Richard Kingi

Don’t really care about Phipps he will be third choice anyway.
But dropping Robinson for Mafu is just stupid

FOS is spot on that Holmes should be there for Alexander.
NFS – I think Sailosi does actually mean Manu not Ma’afu. There are two front rowers named Salesi running around for the Force. Manu has shown some promise, I’d like to see him play some more Super rugby before I’d consider promoting him into the Wallabies though.

I’ve been trying to justify my support in Rob Horne for a while now but I’m even coming around to the voice of the nay sayers. I think that he has a lot of potential but he is not in form and hasn’t been for a long time. He won’t find his form at the wallabies, he needs a full super season of it.
With Taps missing out (that’s the word and a ridiculous one at that) I can only hope that they put AAC at 13. At least he runs better lines and will always put in 110%. He seems to find a way to score against the AB’s too.

I have in the past been confused with deans’ selections but now I’m mystified. How Horne keeps his place and Tapuai misses out is beyond me. I know that Mitchell has lots of experience however he has only just been back from a major injury and only played a handful of game, whereas Shiperley has been the form winger throughout the Super season. That’s the backs and don’t get me started on the forwards, Alexander is an impostor in the front row at test level. Timani is also the same. We will get a hiding nothing surer.

I do agree re Taps and if not fit then it should be Cummins. However a bit hypocritical to say Micthell should not be picked due to lack of matches and back from injury when that is exactly the same situation of Taps , who ws only on the bench for the reds, but you still push for him.
