The finals hopes of Carlton hang by a thread as they come into this do or die match against the Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium. We’ll have live scores kicking off from 7.40pm AEST.
Carlton are coming off the back of a tough loss to Sydney last week at Etihad Stadium, which has now got them two games off the top eight with just three games left in the season.
It’s going to be extremely tough for them to get into the finals from here on, but they have a traditional battle against Essendon and the Gold Coast to round out their season.
If they can win all their matches, they’ll get themselves to 12 wins. They’ll then need to rely on percentage to possibly sneak into eighth.
At the moment, they are struggling to keep up with the rest of those in contention, so big scores are required in the last three weeks.
Getting Andrew Walker and Mitch Robinson back into the team this week could help the flow to the forward line.
They’ll need their small forwards to step up in Jeff Garlett and Eddie Betts, with Levi Casboult still learning the ropes in the AFL as a full forward.
So the quest for a percentage boost has to start tonight against the Brisbane Lions, who in the last three weeks have been ordinary to say the least.
Brisbane fell over the line against the Gold Coast in one of the most abysmal games of the year, got flogged in Perth by the Eagles, then got wiped off the park in the second half against Richmond at home.
It led to captain Jonathan Brown lambasting his side’s effort.
“We have to have a real look at ourselves and step up to the plate, not roll over and say this is too hard,” Brown said.
They get Matt Maguire back in defence, while Ryan Lester is also amongst the inclusions. That comes at a cost of losing Josh Drummond and Patrick Karnezis.
The good news for them is with Carlton sending some of their big names away with injuries in the last couple of weeks, especially in their forward line, that could leave the door open for Daniel Merrett to go up forward and lend a hand to Brown.
Despite a good middle part of the season that saw them win five games out of seven, the last few weeks has suggested that this young side has come to a grounding halt.
But they may be able to spring a surprise at a venue they’ve played well in their last two matches
