The AFL’s two newest clubs meet for the second time as the Gold Coast Suns host the GWS Giants. We’ll have live scores from 4.40pm AEST.
Last time, history was made as the Giants registered their first ever win in somewhat of an upset.
That result raised questions about whether the Suns were on the right track and whether the younger Giants had already overtaken them in terms of development.
Since then, the form of the two sides has shifted. The Giants in particular suffered a barrage of big-deficit losses, while the Suns can rest their hats on the fact while they’ve been losing, the losing margins have been far closer.
Still, last week both sides were presented with very winnable games – the Giants in hosting Port Adelaide and the Suns in facing Melbourne.
Yet again, it was the Giants who were able to rise to the occasion.
The Suns are yet to win on their home turf, so this may be the afternoon they finally reward their fans. But the Giants have a habit of taking the most of an opportunity, which is exactly what this game is.
GWS’s win over Port by 34 points was a huge win for the young club.
Callan Ward, Jonathan Giles, Devon Smith and Chad Cornes were all impressive. Tom Bugg had three goals.
For the Suns, the Demons beat them by 42 points. In an afternoon to otherwise forget, Harley Bennell had an absolutely massive game: 38 disposals, four goals, five inside 50s.
Both teams have made a stack of changes for this game. Jackson Allen for the Suns and Tim Golds for the Giants are set to make their AFL debuts.

….enjoyed my night out at Metricon . Football not the highest standard but some great young and exciting kids coming through.
I did find the light towers a little low and tend to diminish your vision. Was forced to buy a Suns cap at 1/2 time which helped shield the eyes. I guess I will barrack for the Suns now I have the cap in hand.
I kept an eye out for Izzy (Falou i.e) but apart from grab in the 1st Qtr he was no where to be seen. To me he seemed disinterested or was not fit enough to run any distance. He was subbed out shorty after the long break.
My gut tells me he has had enough and wants to go back where he belongs.
Good on the Suns for finally getting on the board at home they will build on that and once the injury list is reduced somewhat I am predicting they will have some big wins at home.

Was glad to see it, definitely some very excited folk in red and yellow in those stands getting to see their team finally chalk up a win on home ground.
Western Force could tell of similar travails xD

The suns got nearly 15,000 at their game today – a very good attendance.
We are talking about an expansion team plonked in a non-heartland area, the first regional expansion team in AFL history, which went nearly 2 whole seasons without winning a game at home (till today), hosting the AFL’s newest team, with the smallest following in the comp.
It’s fair to say that there were maybe 25 GWS supporters there, the rest would have been Suns supporters.
A very good attendance.
The Suns only need to win 4 or 5 games per season (as a minimum) to regularly attract 16,000 to 20,000 each and every home game – and you’d have to describe that as a success story.
