Last Wednesday Holger Osieck announced a 20-man Socceroos squad for the international friendly with Scotland in Edinburgh on the 15th of August.
Socceroos squad:
Keepers: Adam Federici, Mitch Langerak, Mark Schwarzer.
Defenders: David Carney, Jason Davidson, Chris Herd, Ryan McGowan, Lucas Neill, Sasa Ognenovski, Luke Wilkshire, Rhys Williams.
Midfielders: Mark Bresciano, Brett Holman, Mile Jedinak, Neil Kilkenny, Carl Valeri.
Forwards: Alex Brosque, Robbie Kruse, Scott McDonald, Archie Thompson.
Disappointingly, he’s got a few of his selections wrong.
As Mike Cockerill pointed out earlier in the week, we are at a halfway point between two World Cups. This friendly needed to be used as a game where the fringe players, and potential WC 2014 members, got given a chance to prove their worth.
So how would The Blog FC approached selecting the squad?
First of all, let’s rule out any Australian-based players. Archie Thompson – that’s you. This is not a slight on Archie or the A-League – there are many worthy candidates plying their trade in the HAL.
The reason for the omission is that most of the players haven’t kicked a ball in anger in over five months. They are all in the midst of pre-season. It’s best just to leave them be.
Second, let’s leave out some of the veterans. This doesn’t mean their Aussie careers are over, there is just little point to trot them out for a meaningless friendly.
Mark Schwarzer doesn’t need to prove himself. He is still our number one keeper. But if something were to happen between now and 2014 – and let’s face it, there is a distinct possibility that something will – we need to know how the alternative ‘keepers would fare against international competition.
It’s good that both Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell have been omitted. Cahill needs to establish himself at his new club, whilst Kewell still needs to find himself one.
Which brings us to Lucas Neill. Possibly Holger’s worst selection. Neill has been without a club nearly two and a half months. His match fitness will be poor, and there is nothing to be gained from having him in the squad.
Osieck has justified his inclusion by saying, “In his role as captain he is very important to me, he is very important the team.”
What a cop out. We should be using this friendly to see what other leaders will step up.
As for the other established Socceroos – Ognenovski, Wilkshire, Bresciano, Holman, Jedinak, Valeri, Brosque – leave them in.
We need a core of experience; players to show the youngsters the ropes. Particularly Bresciano. He has just returned to the fold and another impressive performance will do wonders for his confidence leading into the next WC qualifiers.
So who comes in? Replacing Schwarzer we have Matt Ryan. One of our hottest prospects for the future and is currently in England trialling with Tottenham. That one is a no-brainer.
For Neill, Luke de Vere should get a run. He is playing regularly for Gyeongham FC and certainly has the quality to be our long-term centre-back.
Finally, for Thompson, let’s give Richard Porta a run. To be honest, I haven’t seen Porta play – but the statistics speak for themselves. Porta scored 17 times in 14 starts for Uruguayan champion Nacional last season. This sort of strike rate needs to be rewarded with, at the very least, an inclusion in the squad.
The Blog FC’s Socceroos squad:
Keepers: Adam Federici, Mitch Langerak, Matt Ryan.
Defenders: David Carney, Jason Davidson, Chris Herd, Ryan McGowan, Sasa Ognenovski, Luke Wilkshire, Rhys Williams, Luke de Vere.
Midfielders: Mark Bresciano, Brett Holman, Mile Jedinak, Neil Kilkenny, Carl Valeri.
Forwards: Alex Brosque, Robbie Kruse, Scott McDonald, Richard Porta.

Whats the point of a friendly to some football supporters if you arent going to change and manouver your squad, really as Wisey has said I have no need in knowing whether Schwaz is in good touch or whether Lucas was solid at the back.
I think after this campaign we wont be using foreign national team coaches “they dont do anything, their predictable and cover their arse until the world cup” and say good bye at the end .
I appreciate international friendlies,it could excite more punters though if we used some fresh faces, are we overtly concerned about being beaten in a friendly, i’m not !.

You could go off half cocked wth conspiracy theories that he’s secretly waiting for a full call up to the Sweaty Socks. Realistically though its hugely disappionting, but he is obviously in Herr Osieck’s plans so will surely get another chance. He’ll have to fly next time though!
I guess this means we’ll see what Davidson has to offer? – could still be a good news story.

Putting Matt Ryan in the squad when he’s in the middle of trials at English clubs would hardly help him win a contract.
Also how many Australian fans have seen Porta play? (Apart from YouTube highlights). Uruguay has a strong national team and punches well above its weight when you look at their population. But how strong is their domestic league? Surely the top players would head to Europe or other South American leagues.
Porta is now in Dubai so his career is hardly flourishing. At least Neill and Bresciano had a decade of playing in the top European leagues before going to the middle east.

I’m a little baffled by all this hoopla about Richard Porta. While I don’t claim to be an afficionado of the south american domestic scene I do believe only the argentine and brazilian leagues are of a significant standard.
The rest are feeder-leagues where players with talent spend their early years before being snaffled up by big argie, brazilian or european clubs. The fact he has spent his entire career in Uruguay tells me either 1. He’s not much chop or 2. He’s not motivated enough to test himself at a higher level.
Point 2. should be noted by a certain M. Spiranovic by the way!

Porta is being talked about because of his very good goal scoring record – 76 goals in 146 games or better than 1 every second game.
The Uruguay national competition is very good in comparison to many others, since 1960 a Uruguay club has won South America’s premier club champions league competition, the Copa Libertadores, 8 times.
Porta has played for the young Socceroos and has played for the Uruguay U-20 team that included players like Suarez. Uruguay are ranked 4 in the world by FIFA. He was born in Sydney to Uruguayan parents, so can play for either.
He has also played in Seria A for Siena and in the UAE.
Its a good idea for him to play in UAE seeing we are now part of Asia and a lot of our WCQ games will be played in the middle east. If he does well, Osieck might notice.
Its the same standard of competition that Neil, Bresciano, Ognenovski and Spiranovic play in and not a “step down”.
Why would you selct Archie Thompson who hasn’t played a game for 5 months or McDonald who has never scored for the Socceroos in 26 games.

Ok, if he’s keen and he can identify with Australia and the socceroos then let’s have a look at him. His scoring rate looks impressive.
It’s just where he’s done his scoring that leaves me underwhelmed. I’m sure the Uruguayan league is of half decent standard but if he’s that good why isn’t he in one of the top or second tier leagues now at the peak of his footballing career?
I’m open to be proven wrong so I say, ok, Holger give him a run or two and see how we go. As long as he understands the concept of playing for Australia and doesn’t treat it like free ride to becoming an international so he can tick that box on his bucket list. If he wants it badly enough we would love to hear what he has to say.

Holger also needs to consider how picking Porta would impact on the team. Would picking a player with little to no English and who by all reports hasn’t been to Aust. since he was a child drive a wedge into the Socceroos squad.
The Socceroos have always said who well they get on and how they all have something in common being Aussies plying their trades overseas.
Then again he couldn’t be worse than Max Vieri…

To prove that the era of Nacional and Penarol winning the copa libertadores and club world cup championships was not just symptomatic of a time when Uruguyan players staeyd in Uruguay, Penarol were runners up in last seasons copa libertadores and the season before that Nacional, one of Porta’s clubs were semi finalists. THose two clubs can still do the business. Amazing for a country with 3 million people. I would say they are to football what the All Blacks are to Rugby. It would be good to see Porta play for Oz, apart from the fact he is good enough, it would be good for us to actually steal some players from other countries for once after it has happened to us so many times.

If anyone saw The World Game on SBS last night they would have seen Foz perform a reverse 3 1/2 Somersaults in the tuck position. Yes the Great Foz now admits that we can’t make major changes to the Socceroos squad becasue we just don’t have the cattle coming through like we did in previous years (read 2006). Yes, when Holger came on board Foz was talking about replenishing the side, getting rid of the old fogies, but now agrees with Holger’s more cautious approach. Pity Foz didn’t come around to the same view when Pim was at the helm. Yes Pim also, wisely, noted that there wasn’t the cattle coming through so he stuck mostly with the old guard – give or take a few faces like Holminho. Time for Foz to apologise to Pim.

Professor Foster did disagree with the team selections but as usual, didn’t have any suggestions about who to select in their place or provide a solution to the problem.
Its a balancing act at the moment as to how bad the ageing Socceroos have to get to be replaced by the younger ones, who are not quite good enough yet.
The standard of the Socceroos will fall in the short term until this is sorted out. Osieck needs to take some risks to make those fringe players good enough to step up, not just keep relying on the old brigade like Archie Thompson.
If the Socceroos lose their next couple of Asian WCQs and we are backs to the wall, it will be panic stations because he has no Plan B.

Finishing the WCQ with three of our final four games at home will help – we have a very good record against middle eastern nations at home (not including the loss in Canberra with A-League players under Pim).
Also the fact all other teams besides Japan have drawn helps. We really only need to win one of the next two away and finish strongly at home.
Well that’s what I tell myself when I think my trip to Brazil in two years could be in doubt….

What was impressive about Fozzies performance was that it was delivered with a straight faced entry into the water – no hesitation or embarrassment concerning his previous position. The future is bright but the new boys need game time at their clubs before they are hardened for international duty. In the meanwhile, the legs of Bresc, Harry, Luca$h will slow – hopefully they’ll be OK for Rio.

1) Ryan is on trial – why take him away from a trial(s) just to participate in a squad
2) DeVere needs to establish himself at his club, not go flying around the world
3) Porta is just not an option, can’t even speak the English
The obly thing this article is good for is commenting on its bizarreness/stupidity.

I think you are being a bit harsh here.
1) Ryan’s trial ended at Tottenham last week. Whilst he is set to start trialing with both Wigan and WBA, as far as I’m aware neither of those trials have begun yet. (ALSO – having a look at his and Archie T’s twitter… it looks like Maty Ryan might be catching up with the Aussie squad atm anyway)
2) DeVere has been at Gyeongnam FC for 18 months now and has played 49 games for them. I’m not sure how much more established you’d like him to be?
3) Everyone seems to be divided by Porta – which is understandable. All I’m calling for is the chance for him to be looked at. His strike rate in the Uruguayan champion Nacional was impressive, and in my mind that warrants selection ahead of Thompson (who has been out of competition for 5 months).

Devere is a good point, though I guess that there are only so many debutants you want at CB in any given fixture and McGowan has been given the nod in this instance.

Ben of Phnom Penh said | August 15th 2012 @ 7:37am | Report comment
Like most squads there are plenty of potential debutants in the squad, with most of them in the back-line. Once you have Davidson on the left and McGowan in the middle then there is the need for a very experienced natural leader to mentor them on the pitch to keep the back-line working as a unit; Neill is that man. Throw Williams into the RB role (though I’d still like to see him tested at CB) and that leaves precious little Socceroo experience across the back.
My main disappointment is nothing to do with Holger, but merely the fact that Leckie’s ankle is not completely healed restricting him to coming off the bench for Frankfurt (where he has excelled).
As with most squads I will reserve judgement until I see who gets game-time; that is what matters.
