Scotland vs Socceroos: International Friendly live scores, blog

After an inauspicious start to their 2014 World Cup Qualifying campaign, Holger Oseick’s Socceroos will be looking for form when they face Scotland in Edinburgh this morning. We’ll have live scores and updates from 5.00am AEST.
Two stalemates, away against Oman and then home against group heavyweights Japan, have left Australia with only two points from their opening matches, meaning an already-difficult path to Brazil has become that much harder.
It might not be panic stations yet but tricky away trips to Jordan and Iraq loom.
After a meek, soulless performance against the Danes in Copenhagen back in early June it was unsurprising that the Socceroos performed as they did. Friendlies against Scotland this morning, and Lebanon early next month provide Oseick with the opportunity to get his men on the front foot.
They’ll go into the clash against the Scots missing a host of first-team regulars. Kewell, Cahill, Kennedy and Emerton will all be absent. Several fringe players, including Scott McDonald and Neil Kilkenny, are expected to get the opportunity to impress from the opening kick-off with starting positions.
Scotland will be led by the likes of Charlie Adam, James Morrison and Robert Snodgrass, and after being hammered 5-1 by the United States in Florida in late May, will be expected to rebound in front of an expectant home crowd.

Having this fixture is the equivalent to playing a one off cricket test in September before the club and shield season had even begun.
Means nothing to me, and should not have been held in the first place.

FULL TIME: Scotland 3-1 Socceroos
Well, there had been conjecture over the form of the Socceroos after an indifferent performance against Denmark and two draws against Oman and Japan respectively, and that certainly will not change now. Scotland were made to look better than they are by the majority of the Australian squad. Huge question marks loom over the future of several Socceroos regulars. Oseick has his work more than cut out for him if the Socceroos are going to get anywhere near Brazil.
That will be it this morning, thanks for following along. Enjoy Thursday.

Well under Frank Farina and without either Harry Kewell or Mark Viduka who were at the peak of their powers back in 2000 we beat Scotland 2-0. Unfortunately too many players are now heading to vastly inferior leagues in Asia and in particular the Middle East and thinking about their wallets. They are allowed to do this but as a result the national team is going to struggle. Osiek is in a pickle – he has to qualify, the youngsters are not coming through and the veterans are all cashing in the Middle East and trying to cling to a national team spot
We are very lucky our World Cup qualifying group has a) the 3 Arab countries all content drawing with each other and b) Japan who are clubbing these countries which helps on For and Against
Osiek wont pick De Vere, Lowry or Bosnar and is obsessed still with Kruse who couldnt cut it in Division 2 Germany and Archie. The only young player with promise, Chris Herd, pulls out every time he is picked

Game all but petering out in these final stages. First half the Socceroos looked infinitely better with Bresciano and Holman in the middle of the park. In the second half they’ve looked far, far too pedestrian. Mile Jedinak, I’m looking at you.

Just turned off, Archie Thompson on. Osiek has probably shown that he is not bothered about the future of Australian football. Don’t sack him, make the fool work for his severance & start looking for a credible successor.

Do they not tackle in Qatar, or whatever far-flung country Ognenovski is playing in now? He’s been pathetic tonight and at 33, is NOT up to international standard and certainly won’t be in two more years. Given his snide comments when Spiranovic was picked over him awhile back, I’d be more than happy to see the back of him.

Charlie Adam has been very good for the Scots tonight. Encouragingly for Liverpool fans (I’m not one of them) he looks to have perhaps picked up a yard of pace. WIth that said, the Socceroos have given him far too much leeway in the middle of the park.

That’s pretty sharp from Scott McDonald. Skips around with a sharp turn on the edge of the area, buys himself a yard of space and cracks his shot…over the bar. Oseick needs to bribe one of these teams in a friendly to let McDonald off the mark, once he gets his first he could be a real asset to this team, I believe.

It’s often a bugbear of mine but Luke Wilkshire…c’mon. Australia do well to fight and win the ball back, WIlliams knocks a comfortable ball to him, instead of opening out and passing, he dwells on the ball and gives away possession. Frustrating to watch.

Snodgrass and Hutton have been superb during the first 50 or so minutes of this contest and it is those two who once again link up down the right. Only a desperate, lunging Ognenovski can prevent the cross, and he looks to have worn one in the crown jewels for his efforts. Ouch.

I had just been about to write how Scotland had looked a bit shell-shocked since the Bresciano goal, but the thought soon evaporates as Danny Fox beats Williams down Scotland’s left and whips in a deep cross to the head of Jordan Rhodes, who has looked good as Scotland’s target man, and he nods a dominant header past Schwarzer, who can do nothing.
