The All Blacks team selected to play the Wallabies at ANZ Stadiumn on Saturday night could be called the ultimate respect team.
For the key principle behind the selections it seems to me is that, when confronted with deciding between potential and experience, the selectors have opted for experience.
Read more: Romano wins surprise start for All Blacks
And the reason for this is obvious enough.
Despite all the talk about how much better the All Blacks are on paper against the Wallabies, the fact is that the Sydney Test will be a tremendously hard game for them to win.
The All Blacks won by one point in their last two Tests against the Wallabies at Sydney, 23 – 22 in 2010 and 19 – 18.
This year the Wallabies have had a long preparation because there was no Australian side in the Super Rugby semi-finals.
The coaches have used this time to get the squad, and especially the Waratahs contingent in the squad (8 of them), really fit.
The new coaching team, too, has spent a lot of time prepping the Wallabies on strategies to counter what went wrong last year in the 2011 RWC semi-final.
The All Black selectors clearly expect a really tough encounter in the forwards with a re-vitalised Wallaby pack. There has been some debate in New Zealand over the selection of the tough Luke Romano over the huge, young, Brodie Retallick in the second row.
But this selection goes to the heart of the matter for the All Blacks success in the last few years.
On the bus for officials leaving Eden Park after the 2011 RWC semi-final, Fred Allen sought out John O’Neill to tell him: “John, if the Wallabies had a couple of Brad Thorn’s in the pack they’d be world-beaters.”
Romano is the nearest equivalent in New Zealand rugby to Thorn. He is big enough. Tough. A vigorous and relentless tackler. And a smashing runner in the mid-field.
With Kieran Read, Romano and Liam Messam, the All Blacks have three big, hard running forwards which will allow Richie McCaw to concentrate more on his fetching and link game at number 7.
In the backs, too, the selectors have gone for the experience of Hosea Gear (although, like Romano, he has hardly played much for the All Blacks) over the raw potential of Julian Savea.
Only 8 of the Wallabies involved in the RWC 2011 semi-final are in the squad for Saturday night’s Test. The same number of All Blacks are backing up from the 2011 for the coming Test.
But for the All Blacks, one of the changes is a critical one: Dan Carter was out for the RWC game.
Aaron Cruden played splendidly against the Wallabies that day and even kicked a field goal that nailed home the lead advantage.
But with Carter back, the All Blacks get their greatest number 10 back, the player who has scored more points in Tests than any other player and a player who when he plays with Richie McCaw rarely is on the losing side for the All Blacks.
The old firm of Carter and McCaw, together with a frontrow with the most capped All Blacks prop and hooker of all time in Tony Woodcock (86 caps) and Keven Mealamu (93), is heading a team that has the experience and the record to perform strongly in what is going to be a cauldron of Wallaby support at ANZ Stadium.
All Blacks team: Israel Dagg, Cory Jane, Ma’a Nonu, Sonny Bill Williams, Hosea Gear, Dan Carter, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw (captain), Liam Messam, Sam Whitelock, Luke Romano, Owen Franks, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock. Reserves: Ben Smith, Aaron Cruden, Piri Weepu, Victor Vito, Brodie Retallick, Ben Franks, Andrew Hore.

They needed to show respect Spiro as this will be a very hard Test to win.
The Wallabies have had the perfect preparation, they are motivated to balance the ledger after the Semi Final loss at RWC2011 and they have a home game in front of their favorite crowd. To top this off the All Blacks are missing a key man in Conrad Smith.
This will be a big step up from playing Ireland in New Zealand and a true Test of how the All Blacks are mentally traveling after the RWC2011 win.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the ABs slip up here to be honest.
After all if we use the “Australian thinking” The Wallabies have had more time to prepare so are and should be “Better Prepared”
The Wallabies are playing at home at a venue where their last two losses are by a solitary point against the ABs.
The Wallabies are the Number 2 team in the world a win at home over the ABs in their first hit out in the 2012 Rugby Championship will be a massive blow but it won’t spell the end of the world either.
if the Wallabies do win the gloating will be horrendous as always, well for a week at least until they get brought back down to Earth with an almighty thud at Eden Park.

Deans has stacked his bench in the forwards and looks to be aiming to play two fetchers later in the game, the ABs have gone for no specialist backup to Richie. Highlights the totally different approach to the breakdown. I like Hansen’s approach of making every player an effective fetcher as the game has changed and the role of the specialist fetcher is not as important as it used to be.

Geeez that is a seriously good team, when Cruden ( form 5/8 in World Rugby ) can’t get a start that tells you something. We finally get to see Dagg v Beale. That AB pack looks ominous and hard to see our blokes breing able to match them. AB’s to win by 7.

It’s a strong team, isn’t it?
Interesting to hear a few Wallabies forwards talk about how they’re changing their approach to the breakdown this season. Essentially the comments were that, in the past, they’ve relied on the referee to keep the breakdown clean and fair… but that’s not working.
I like the change in attitude. Although it may just lead to Dan Carter kicking 10 penalties…

Will, the Chiefs took responsibility for policing the breakdown when they last played the Crusaders, unsettling the Crusader game-plan and the players, even McCaw.
I think the Chiefs were lucky to get away with their “policing” of the rules. That is one archilles heel in the Wallaby plan. The other is, the All Blacks might respond with some policing of their own.
But I like the change in attitude. The back-row is the one area the Wallabies might match the All Blacks.
I have to say, the good attitude is mitigated by inexperience at No 8, which can — I think, “will” — lead to problems.

The All Black advantage of having “much better” players will be lost because the Wallabies have better coaches and an extra week of preparation?
The Fred Allen quote would apply to any number of teams, including the current All Blacks.

Stoked for Hosea Gear and Liam Messam, those two will give it their all. Messam is the next Kaino, if he can play a bit tighter than super rugby. He’s extremely strong and dynamic, just needs to reduce the errors- i can’t wait to see how he goes.
I said it earlier in the week and here it is again- the wallabies are targeting the AB’s lineout. they have a defensive backline with a kicking #10, i reckon they fancy themselves with shutting down the AB’s backline and kicking for territory and then trying to steal a lineout or force an error.
The problem for the wallabies is going to be scoring enough points themselves to win, while trying to restrict the AB’s points. hardly exciting stuff but might be the only way they think they can win

Why would Fred Allen seek out John O’Neill about Wallaby team deficiencies? Is O’ Neill a selector and highperformance manager as well?
As for respect I think the All Black selections show respect for the Bledisloe, the jumper and the Kiwi nation. Its got bugger all to do with us frankly.

I’m with you Uncle, the AB selectors won’t be thinking about respect for the Wallabies, they are picking a team that they think is going to win the match. The day the AB’s show that sort of respect is the day the sky will fall in. They may mouth those words about respect but thats only them being facetious and keeping journo’s happy. They will do the experimenting elsewhere. They want to win every game against the Wallabies and the Springboks.

Agreed you two fellas, a Wallabies outfit that is based on DEFENCE only will get really punished ALL OVER the park on Saturday. The All Blacks backline smells of both defence and attack, and whilst Keiran Read may be short of a gallop, his fellow loosies are the ones to do the damage especially Liam Messan with both the ball in hand and brutal defence. Sorry guys, but the chestnut that the Wallabies have had a longer build up reminds me of a stayer going ‘fresh up’ into a Melbourne Cup and getting the stitch/gasping 500m out with that lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng run to the winning post. I’ve revised my winning margin upwards now >>> The All Blacks by 25+pts……….. cheers

Australia, we have too many Waratah’s in the side who are there on reputation not form. We have an incosistent selection policy and interference outside the team. Not goood.

Great to see Gear back as well, this is his opportunity to show Hansen why he stayed in NZ rugby. Going to be hell of a test, the ABs IMO is going to be really fired up for this game. It’s Hansen’s first game here in charge and the ABs know this is their real tester before the rest of the series. Go the ABs
