Wallabies scrum up to All Blacks challenge
Related coverage
Prop Benn Robinson has declared the Wallabies scrum will be up to the challenge of confronting the All Blacks, who will have their World Cup-winning front row back in harness this Saturday in the opening Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championship Test.
Hooker Keven Mealamu, who missed the first two Tests against Ireland in June with a calf injury, and came off the bench for the third, has been named in the starting line-up for the ANZ Stadium encounter.
It will be the first time since the World Cup final win over France last October that Mealamu and props Tony Woodcock and Owen Franks will start as a unit.
The trio boast a combined tally of 213 Tests, with Mealamu (93) and Woodcock (86) the most-capped All Blacks hooker and prop respectively.
Australian scrum anchor Robinson said New Zealand had always proven a very tough challenge in that department and he expected it to be a big factor this weekend.
“They’ve always been a good scrum. For us, it’s a scrum we enjoy packing against – they’re No.1 at the moment,” Robinson said.
“Looking at their selections, they’ve gone with a fairly experienced pack.
“How I see it is that it looks like they are really keen to scrummage out there.
“It always comes down to a few scrums. We’ve seen in recent years, a few scrums have gone either way for us.
“We’re pretty excited about it. As a front row, we love scrummaging – we love packing against the best in the business, so we’re up for the challenge.”
Australia will look to counter the New Zealand front row with the all-NSW trio of props Robinson and Sekope Kepu and hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau.
“It’s good to have that familiarity,” Robinson said.
Robinson said Australia definitely had scope for improving their scrummaging following the three-Test whitewash of Wales in June.
“I’ve always spoken about since I’ve been here about making sure our scrum has been consistent,” Robinson said.
“The more we can take the referee out of the game, the more we can bring it back into our hands – the better it’s going to be for us.”
Robinson, who missed the last trans-Tasman clash in the 2011 World Cup semi-final due to a knee injury, stressed the All Blacks had plenty of weapons apart from the scrum.
“There’s so many areas where they’re a good side,” Robinson said.
“You can’t just focus on Richie (McCaw) at the breakdown or the back three and how good they are,” Robinson said.

quote – “For us, it’s a scrum we enjoy packing against ,” Robinson said.”
really? because the aus forward pack dont always look like they’re enjoying it, in fact a couple of times it looks like they wanna cry.
quote – ““it looks like they are really keen to scrummage out there.” captain obvious strikes again. nz teams always love to scrum. not an international secret.
why the hell are they interviewing a low brow like benRobinson? his quotes can only go under the “no sht sherlock” category. i mean quotes like ““I’ve always spoken about since I’ve been here about making sure our scrum has been consistent,” Robinson said.” well you’ve achieved that. when robinsons on its consistently bad.

Yeah, the All Blacks will be real scared having to face the power and might of the NSW front row. (>>grin<<) Is Big Benn in lala land already or what? Has he eaten too many PIES? And of course, the Waratahs front row was the most feared in the Super 15 Comp ?? gees, these guys are in for a fair bit of taunting WHEN the All Black pack has them buckling and collapsing. Benn, you're a lightweight, mate.

Agree. I sometimes wonder if he is playing the same games we are watching?! The only consistency about their scrum is that they are always under enormous pressure when they play any of the top 8 sides. i reckon no coach of these top 8 sides would select any current wallabies front row in their starting XV.
Am always amazed when i read roarers saying Robinson was the best tight head prop in the world in 2009, 2010. Robinson is definitely mastering the ‘Coué method’ or autosuggestion: ‘we are good, we are good’. need more than that on the pitch.

Scrum time will be interesting, the power comes from the back 5 with the front 3 being the conduit of this force. Will the ABs get the grunt coming through that will make them dominant ? Too be honest I don’t think so, so if the wallabies can get clean ball and hold their ground well that’s a thumbs up and one less problem they have to worry about. It’s then over to line outs which I feel the Wallabies can cause a lot of challenges.

Shungmao ” the power comes from the back 5 ” u hvent played in the front row have you? dont let any frontrower hear you say that.
basically our best front row combination (mealamu and hore being interchangeable). are starting so i expect a high standard of scrummaging. whether the wallabies can meet that standard is the question. potentially they can and i hope they do, it would go a long way to making the game a real arm wrestle

Mania let’s not kid ourselves that’s where the majority of the power comes from, ask the Irish boys since Thorne has gone north. As for the front rowers club that I am a veteran and yes we push as part of the momentum that has been created from our initial hit but our body position is the key as we are generally being pushed by a ton of force coming from both directions. Hore over Mealamu in my books but it is what it is,

Shungmao no sht, your a frontrower and your giving credit to the locks? what is this world coming to?
agree hore vs mealamu. mealamu has a simple direct style, irresistable. hore however gets in there and starts making other teams wonder whether they have what it takes to hold onto it.

There is something in the reality of having to listen to these articles. If we just had a scrum that could maintain parity there would be no article. The same old plods keep up the same boring line….do the talking on the field so we dont have to read this tripe…

Back to reality Robbo – you don’t even deserve to be in the team. If I were you I would take your Waratah Woffle and shut up. Too much talk mate. Just do.

BREAKING NEWS :- But Uncle Gargoyle, will the break through the Maginot Line and have their way with the Aussie women in the trenches. >>> Now, “To be or not be, that is the question. Whether to take up arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing, end them”"” – a few lines from HAMLET (but it’s been a bloody long time since I gazed upon Ophelia). ………….. back to the trenches, stilettos, french kisses and the ANZ Football Stadium.

Will be interesting to see if the refs continue to allow woodcock to break his bind and prop himself up off the turf every second scrum.
Whatever Robinson had he has lost, was previously the best prop in OZ to me it seems his knee injury is still affecting him mentally as well. Massive lack of self confidence in his game at the moment
