The Wallabies must win at their Eden Park graveyard next week if they’re to keep alive hopes of stopping a 10-year Bledisloe Cup dynasty for New Zealand after falling 27-19 in the Rugby Championship opener at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
A string of attacking and defensive errors from fullback Kurtley Beale directly led to All Blacks flyers Israel Dagg and Corey Jane crossing for first-half tries and, despite having their opportunities and drawing the second half 9-9, the Wallabies weren’t able to bridge the gap.
The All Blacks were rusty at times and the Wallabies refused to give up.
But they were punished for an opening 40 minutes littered with mistakes as New Zealand took a giant stride towards holding onto the Bledisloe Cup which has been in their possession since 2003.
Dan Carter rubbed salt into the wounds after the siren, booting a penalty kick to rob Australia of a crucial bonus point in the first game of the inaugural four-nation Rugby Championship.
Robbie Deans’s men must now break a 26-year hoodoo against the All Blacks at Auckland’s Eden Park and win the third Test in Brisbane on October 20 if they’re to pull off a miracle recovery against the World Cup champions.
Veteran forward Nathan Sharpe gave the Wallabies hope in the shadows of halftime when he crashed over to be 18-10 behind and three Berrick Barnes penalties in the second half, including one with five minutes remaining, kept the match within reach.
New Zealand’s Sonny Bill Williams had a mixed night in his much-anticipated return to ANZ Stadium after he controversially walked out on the NRL’s Canterbury Bulldogs back in 2008.
Williams threw a forward pass in the opening minute which led to Australia taking a 3-0 lead from a subsequent scrum penalty, however the devastating No.12 made amends 12 minutes later when he ran a brilliant decoy for man-of-the-match Dagg’s opener.
Beale failed to get to ground when he ran the ball midfield 40 metres out from his own line and then he made a meal of a cover-defending attempt on Dagg after Williams and Carter had mesmerised the Wallabies inside men.
It only got worse for Beale – who made the most basic of errors eight minutes from halftime when he dropped a simple pass as he looked to clear the ball off his own line with no pressure on him whatsoever.
The out of sorts Melbourne Rebels No.15 was then left grasping at thin air again when Jane crossed from the scrum.
Dropped five-eighth Quade Cooper is sure to come under consideration for the rest of the Rugby Championship after Barnes struggled to get the Australian attack going in front of 76,877 fans.
Deans said the Wallabies would need to make a marked improvement after making “unacceptable” errors.
“It has to be, we have to be better. That wouldn’t be too hard I don’t think,” said Deans.
“We spent too long in our own half, and then tried to play too much rugby at that end as well and you can’t do that against these blokes.”
Vice-captain Will Genia said Beale didn’t deserve any more blame than the rest of the side.
“He’s disappointed just as much as everyone is. He made mistakes but we all did, we all made errors that compounded and compounded and put us under pressure,” Genia said.
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said he expects both teams to overcome their rust next week in Auckland and called on his team to realise the job isn’t yet done despite Australia’s dire record at Eden Park.
“It’s only a factor if the people wearing the jersey make it one. It’s about going home, staying humble, keeping our feet firmly on the ground and not too much back slapping,” said Hansen, who was happy with the three points towards to his Rugby Championship tally away from home.
“If we front up on Saturday night with the right attitude we give ourselves plenty of opportunity to (secure the Bledisloe) … but if we go home and think we’ve done the job already then that’s a recipe for disaster.”
Prop Tony Woodcock needs scans on a damaged rib.

Some of the young Wallaby rock-star players looked like they had twitter/facebook withdrawal. Imagine having to go 40-50 mins without tweeting, by half time they must have been dying to get back to the changing room to get on their smart phones.
Maybe the Wallaby trainers should be allowed to run out on the field with a smart phone to give the players a quick drink and twitter break.

If the Wallabies are the 2nd best rugby team in the world, then it doesn’t say much for the depth of international rugby, I’m afraid.

So tackling from an offside position is a positive aspect? All im saying is NZ won comprehensively, im an Aussie and ill be the first to say it, but why did that even make the story, it was offside, how was it a positive? They won the game, what were they trying to say ‘If Read was onside the tackle against Pocock would have been awesome’? Who cares since they won, why not just talk about how brilliant they were within the laws of the game, trust me, there were plenty of instances!
I have to admit though, I find it amusing to watch the Aus v NZ sportsman debate, as far as I can see both sides are guilty of it. In fact, I think that is why Australia is doing so badly at the moment way to many players who think they are gods gift to rugby, but then never deliver. A bit of humility would go a long way, less time spent twittering about how great they are and more time practising the basics would be a start.

It was a great legal tackle and worth commenting on and having looked again, he’s wrong, Read wasn’t even offside – he was actually a metre or so behind the rest of the defensive line. It would have been other forwards like Owen Franks or Liam Messam who’d been spotted offside.
It’s a completely bizarre thing to be offended by and I can only conclude you’re looking too hard to find offence.

I Bryan Mitchell wish to atone for my sins to the Roar community. I wish to acknowledge that Jerry is the font of all rugby knowledge and has corrected my twisted view of reality. I would like to clearly state that my post was most definately not about Alistairs comments relating to the fact that only Australians whinge about the referee, and that it was entirely about the quote from the NZHerald relating to a tackle that was most definately not offside.
Just to reiterate the key points of this post:
1. It is most definately only Australians who cheat in all areas of rugby
2. It is only Australians who whinge about the quality of refereeing in International Test Matches
3. Jerry is most definately not a one sided, stubborn, pedantic moron with no ability to read any of my other comments in the posts.
4. I am most definately not a rugby tragic, as I have been shown the error of my ways, and that hopefully one day I can attempt to attain the lofty heights of Jerrys intelligence and rugby knowledge, even if it means being reincarnated as a Kiwi.
Thankyou for taking the time to read these comments so that I may be able to in some small measure repay the debts that my innaccuracies have cause the rugby community.
Yours Sincerely,

So, you brought up Gregor Paul mentioning the tackle because Alistair mentioned Aussies complaining about the ref – why? Paul isn’t complaining about the ref there, he’s mentioning a good tackle. He’s not questioning the decision, he’s just saying that despite the fact the AB’s were offside, it was a great hit. It has no relevance to the post you’re replying to.

The quality of both teams was poor. Australia the poorer of the two. Missed tackles, dropped passes being the two biggest contributors to their loss.
The number of penalties for each side in the match was Aus 12 – 14 NZ. NZ kicked 4 out of 4 and Aus 5 out of 6. (In the SA/Arg match it was SA 11 – 14 Arg and in Australia’s first test against Wales in June with Joubert on the whistle it was Aus 12-14 Wal)
Some people believe the ref was whistle-happy with all the penalties awarded, and thought he should have let things go and flow. Others believe that he missed infringements e.g. At the lineout, and should have blown for these.
Looking back at the game, here’s what I recall of the penalties and what they were given for. Which ones should the ref have let go?
NZ dropping shoulder in scrum.
.NZ going into ruck from side
Holding on twice – Pocock
Offside three times
Encroaching on lineout by Genia having been told by ref not to minutes earlier
Interference at back of lineout by NZ
Breakdown offences – handling on ground both sides
Scrum collapse penalty by Aus.

Alistair,
I’m a one eyed AB supporter who’s interest is that rugby is improved so that it is constantly the best game in the world. The game played in heaven.
The two best teams in the world were playing and there were 28 penalties. A penalty every 2.7 mnutes. How many penalties would there have been with two lesser teams. You could see the two captains and other players had no idea what the referee was on about.
A referee who is able to get the players playing to his style should aim for no more than 20 penalties. Frankly, I believe the laws/interpretations should be changed so there are no more than 15.
Am I the only one who believes than SBW’s offload to Cory Jane (which he dropped and missed a try) was knocked forward slightly by Beale.
I think the Wallaby supporters have every right to be disappointed.

The problem I have is that both sets of supporters should be disappointed at the match. The buildup was huge; the anticipation and excitement was there for all to see. What did we get? Well, actually compared with what we wanted we got a damp sqibb. Imagine paying big money to go to that match. There were a few instances of brilliance, a talented and committed AB team; a Wallaby team ,also talented ,that didn’t give up but which let itself down in too many areas. I can only believe that most of the people who attended that match would consider it money not well spent in the circumstances.
But you know, I think the referee was responsible for the teams losing their way because he didn’t allow the game to flow at all and he turned the whole event into a stop start affair, confusing it for the players and ruining it for millions of people.
In my opinion both teams lost confidence in the referee. They couldn’t work out what he was looking for, which affected the confidence and natural flair of some of the players, made them think too much, try too hard, rather than playing instinctively which they do when they are at their best, and ultimately this uncertainty caused them to make mistakes they normally wouldn’t make.
So IMO rugby is the best game in the world and we know it’s the game that’s played in heaven. But until the administrators get their act together on the way it should be officiated then it will not reach the potential that is there for all to see.

I may as well have the last word on my claim that the referee ruined the match. There is a very interesting survey currently being carried out byThe NZ Herald.
It’s about what was the most enjoyable feature of the game. 38% said beating Australia again; the two tries the ABs scored shared 26% (Daggs try was more popular). But here’s the sad part. 36% said that there were too many penalties which made the match impossible to watch.
Rugby officialdom has to do better. The referee ruined a multi million dollar activity by not having the necesssary feel for the game.

Was so frustrating to watch. No side gained much but my god there were some bad decisions and way too much stop start……how many times did he play advantage but come back to the penalty even though the attacking team were still moving forward ball in hand. Why stop play?
There were several breakdowns which could have been blown up for any number of reasons as both teams were all over the place and offside yet the ball ended up with the attacking team anyway…refs response? penalize the attacking team…just dont get it..

Barnes was poor tonight, and the back line never looked like threatening. At one stage the Wallabies had a potential 2 man overlap on the left, but Barnes was 25 m behind the line, didnt involve himself in the play, the ball had to go to a forward, and then a turn over resulted. As the pressure went on Barnes he went further and further into the pocket as he always does……Surely Deans can see he is not the answer. Beale was again very poor tonight, the last 2 tests he’s had shockers. The forwards were pretty limp tonight as well. I dont think I saw Dennis, and Timani didnt break the line at all. Higginbothams handling let him down.
This was pretty much like watching the Waratahs masquerading as the Wallabies.

What a game.
Good to See a fully fit McCaw show why he is the best Openside on the planet.
His runs were awesome and the amount of rucks he effected was key to a lot of the turnovers the ABs earned.
Aaron Smith outplayed his opposite which surprised me.
the Wallaby scrum held up well… until the Aussie Franks came on.
I was disappointed in Beale. His errors let in two tries. On the Other hand, Dagg was once again amazing with two “Cullen like” runs
I thought Messam was terrible. He completely undid his good work in the last test. Silly penalties and turnovers.
SBW never got going and the WBs did well to chop his legs out instantly.
Sharpe had a blinder and Digby, as usual, was a handful.
I hope the next game flows a little better, though I liked how good both teams defence was for the most part.
My favourite part of the game was near the end, when Barnes kicked a penalty into touch on the ABs side of halfway.
The WBs then put together a lot of phases.
During those phases they lost 10 metres and turned the ball over and set up a 5 metre scrum fors the ABs.
It was beautiful.

I base it on who is the best now, not before. The last three years Kaino has been the best Forward in the best team.
I’m could care less who others think are better.
His work around the field is the main reason the AB’s physically dominated all teams.
Look to Aaron Crudan’s first run on start. The AB’s were getting owned until Kaino came on to sort them out.
Watch Cape Town, where he destroyed the SA forwards.
He was the one getting our backs that “front foot ball” you hear about.
McCaw is universally seen as the Best… and most people believe in God.
Messam and Vito have a long way to go.

Ridiculous. McCaw WAS the reason we won that RWC last year. On one leg he neutralized the biggest threat to our semi final contest last year and was immense in the final.
Tonight he was again, brilliant. Making turnovers and running well with the ball in hand.
If you could care less who others think is better, don’t go onto a forum site and tell us then. Nonsensical.
Lastly. How can Kaino (who isn’t playing) and Read (who’s coming back from injury and was very rusty tonight) be considered the best RIGHT NOW as you say. Makes no sense.
Your own criteria have caught you out.
And believe me, Read and Kaino are absolutely incredible players but of course, McCaw is the finest in history so it’s a tough match up

Again he wasn’t the only reason we won. So settle down.
You obviously base your opinion heavily on who wins the IRB award.
So Dusautoir is the best on the planet?
Kaino has surpassed McCaw in many matches. Especially the last matches he played for the ABs.
Read was even more effective.
McCaw is my one of my favourite players, but I think Kaino is currently better. A few more games like last night and McCaw will be back on top.
I see it the same as 07. I thought Evens was playing better rugby than Carter during the World cup. He was only better at the Time. Carter is clearly the best again. And maybe Crudan will be soon.
My view changes all the time and I don’t believe in it so strongly that I act like a rude fool to someone who thinks differently.

Agree on Messam especially, he looked awful.
I thought Sharpe was harshly done on both of his turnovers. He broke the defenders both times, but they just laid all over the ball and completely blocked any access the Wallabies had to it.
SBW went according to plans I think. The Wallabies had massively announced all week that they were targeting WIlliams and Nonu, so they ran mostly dummies all night which continually sucked defenders in who were overanxious to target them (especially Williams).
I think we’ve got at least one too many wide playing forwards in the Wallabies pack. With them all seagulling out wide we lacked any drive forward to get our backs front foot ball. Instead we get forwards getting back foot ball while playing as extra centres, which achieved exactly nothing.

Who would be the tighter playing forwards you would put there?

For starters, I’d have Greg Holmes at prop. I don’t like seeing Timani drifting out too far from the breakdown, though with Horwill out there’s not a plethora of options there. I think the biggest problem for me is having Higgers at 8 and…who did we even have a 6? Dennis? Higgers needs to stay at 6 and we need a real specialist 8, ideally Mowen.
Just frustrating to watch us outnumbered at the breakdown again and again, and the missing forwards not even gaining metres out wide to compensate. Often times it looked like we expected Pocock to do to much without enough support.

Messam made some handling errors but had some brilliant play throughout. His running game was very good and when a pack dominate in the scrums you must assume that everyman from 1-8 is doing his job there. You watch the scrum wobble when adam Thompson or Vito are on the park.
Messam is coming into his own currently, he’s tracking in much the same way as Kaino did. Jerome was very much a flakey player who (surprisingly considering the colossus he became) lacked physical presence for a number of tests over a couple of years before blossoming into the best 6 in the world in the last 24-36 months.
Perhaps Messam wil grab his chance now.

Messam has only dominated in one test.
His running game is the very reason he wasn’t being selected.
He needs to stick to his job if he wants to keep it.
Smash rucks and throw people around. Twice his running game ran the ball out.
Our scrum was wobbly until B Franks turned up.

B Franks? Good God. You’re a certain troll! hahahaha
By all means ignore the bulk of my post but a least have something to offer, you empty vessel!
His running game combined with his tighter play this year is WHY he was selected for tis campaign. Christ, you’re really not worth engaging but i feel sorry for you because you’re oviously out of touch and enlightenment is begging for you!
He defend well, ran well ad did his job in the loose. He’ll be there in Auckland and he’s earned his spot.
You’ve shown your hand 7days. Give up while people still don’t know your name

No valid points made. Making assertions to why Messam selected with no evidence is a funny way to make a point..
Not sure why you’re so angry and try to insult someone over a difference of opinion.
Must be an unhappy life for this difference to have such meaning to you.
I’d rather talk about what goes on during the Rugby game.
Messam has been so bad for the All blacks his test numbers have remained tiny over such a massive period.
He has been dropped so numerous times to work on his work rate.
You ignore that his running game lead to 4 turnovers.
The reason he runs so often is because he isn’t doing his job.
And maybe you should have watched the game.
The All Blacks pushed the Wallabies off the ball and won a tighthead as soon as B Franks rolled on. I don’t like him as a player, but stick to the evidence and stop with the teenage tantrums.

Looking at a few more of your comments, I might have to start ignoring your posts. You seem a tad disturbed. And they’re getting harder to decipher the angrier you get.

ABs were a bit rusty, certainly will improve by next saturday, can’t see what else the wallas can offer, i’d bring Cooper back in and move Barnes to 2nd and Faiinga to center, horne is waste the space, wallas should be proud of their set piece but Genia slows down their ruck ball – too much looking around, was out played by young Smith for the ABs. Well done ABs, too much!

I thought our big advantage was that we were together in training camp longer the AB’s. Well it sure didn’t look like it to me. We were woeful!!!!!!
What the hell do we actually practice at camp? I know these are the AB’s but seriously why the fu#k is it that we drop so much damn ball? That’s under 7′s stuff.
I’m still trying to work-out any area of play where we have actually improved since the last time we played the Blacks. Nope!
Sadly our lack of attacking threat at 12 & 13 is coming home to bite us on the ar#e. And Beale looked far from ready with dropped ball and crucial missed tackles.

For mine TPN, Genia, Sharpe, Ioane played well. Kepu, Timani, Dennis, Pocock, AAC can hold their heads up. Everyone else can give themselves an uppercut.
Robinson was worst on ground by a long way. Can we please get Greg Holmes in there.
Higginbotham was MIA. Start Samo, or Mowen or McCalman and put Higginbotham as an impact player and bring him on with 20 to go, he seems to excel at that but he was an empty shirt tonight (except at lineout time where he did well).
Barnes was too deep, passing poorly and taking poor options. Bench him. Bring on Cooper at 10 and the more physical Harris at 12.
Faingaa and Horne. Well that just shows how thoroughly Deans was out-coached by Hansen. Deans picked two centres to try and contain SBW and Nonu and trades attack for defense so Hanson and Carter run all the attack through the wings with Dagg, Jane and Gear. Robbie Deans, you’re crap.
AAC is needed at fullback (because Beale needs to be dropped) and that means Tapuai needs to be rushed in to play 13.
For the other wing, if JOC isn’t ready bring in Shipperley, for god’s sake do not try and play Mitchell there, he’s more under-done than Beale.
I am picking Deans to make one or none of those changes. And next week the ABs will have shaken off some of the rust they had tonight and will double the winning margin.

Now I know why Deans likes having 7 Waratahs in the side. He likes to lose but not by too much.

I thought the Wallabies played with plenty of passion and that passion kept them in the game, so well done on that front. Unfortunately though that’s where it ends. They showed nothing in attack and I don’t think that they have any other options available to change that.
The All Blacks looked rusty to me and will be better for the run. The SBW/Nonu combination did not look very polished which was to be expected however I am sure they will be better next week as well.
I think the Wallabies will be on a hiding to nothing next week in Auckland and I expect the All Blacks will win by 25.

I didn’t think there was much passion from either side to be honest. After the first 15 minutes i sat back and thought i was watching a match played out for fifth and sixth placing at the Olympics.
