Brisbane lose fifth NRL game in a row

Melbourne halfback Cooper Cronk’s right boot put Brisbane in the NRL finals danger zone with a match-winning field goal at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
For the second week running the Broncos blew a good early lead of 12-0, only this time the margin was a single point with Cronk’s 74th minute field goal snatching a 19-18 victory.
Brisbane led 12-6 at halftime after tries to centre Justin Hodges (sixth minute) and Ben Te’o in the 15th minute, both converted by halfback Peter Wallace.
But, just as they did against the Bulldogs the previous weekend, they let Melbourne grab a crucial try just before halftime to winger Sisa Waqa who appeared to lose control of the ball before grounding it with his torso.
Video referee Paul Simpkins had a number of looks from different angles before flashing the green light.
Cronk’s boot also led to Melbourne’s first try after halftime when his grubber hit the heavily padded right hand post.
The Storm halfback swooped through to grab the rebound for the equaliser.
Melbourne hit the lead in the 50th minute with Waqa the beneficiary of yet another perfectly placed Cronk kick which bounced favourably for the Storm winger.
Brisbane forward Te’o set the scene for a grandstand finish, crashing over off a deft Ben Hunt pass in the 71st minute for a Wallace conversion to lock the game up 18-18.
Cronk, who kicked a late field goal to win the State of Origin series last month, snapped the match-winner from 25 metres out.
The Broncos’ fifth loss in a row puts them in danger of missing the finals with 26 points and games to come against Manly and Penrith.
Storm forward Bryan Norrie could be in trouble after being placed on report for leading with his elbow.
Brisbane captain Sam Thaiday came reeling out of a tackle on Norrie in the 69th minute, angering the crowd of 41,000.
Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy said the gritty performance to come from 12-0 down against a Brisbane side fighting for survival reminded him a lot of past Storm sides.
“I thought we defended tremendously well in the first half, I don’t think they (Brisbane) made a mistake,” said Bellamy.
“The way the players hung in and kept fighting reminded me of Storm teams of the past.”
Storm skipper Cameron Smith, exhausted after his 43-tackle effort, said the game had the intensity of a semi-final.
“It reminded me a lot of 2008 when we won a semi-final up here in the last minute (when Greg Inglis scored off a dropped ball).
“They threw everything at us. A team hasn’t thrown that much at us all year.”
Smith said when Te’o scored to level at 18-18, Cronk had said to him “just get me to half way and I’m going to have a shot”.
The Broncos were disappointed to blow a good lead for the second week in a row but coach Anthony Griffin and skipper Thaiday were both happy with their effort.
“It’s frustrating, but we’ll get there,” said Griffin.
Thaiday said his teammates were “playing their backsides off”.
“If we keep playing like that, we’ll end up where we want to be,” he said.

Too many rules… if you can’t put it down with either hand you didn’t score. If it happens in the field of play it’s a knock on, if it happens in goal it’s a try… righto. Even though last night was total separation and it bounced before he landed on it, so no try even with the torso rule. They made some common sense getting rid of the corner post rubbish, need to common sense up and hand scoring only!

the 10 meter rule has destroyed the game i loved playing and cherished, after the early 1990s when this came in ,the interchange rule was phased in ,unlimited at first,it was like gridiron, then that rule was altered to where it is now.the lighter player has almost no place in our game, theyre getting smashed,by these 15 minute part time fowards and its all there on your big screen for your entertainment, look at the under 20s nyc, then look at the schoolboy comp on tv its all happening, the schoolboy and junior leagues too. when i played at schoolboys it was weight divisions, then age divisions came in,i was a full-back most of the time and played at the back row at times as well ;it was the best time of my life, then i played for the local teames and some park footy in the big smoke too,to day i would only be a speed bump, gees some of these players come in around 100 plus kilos and theyre only 15/16 year olds, all this wrestling, high tackling, gang tackling ,and this stupid torso rule in the try,two refs and the bloke upstairs getting it all wrong, dominent tackle, give us a break, the refs will decide the nrl premiers, can i get on and lay some cash on this anywhere, please help.

Nines Broncos commentary team had several rages during the game, if it wasn’t so biased it would be funny.
Remind me, did the bronco play the perfect game in the eyes of the refs, how many penalties did the storm get? Particulatly liked the different interpretations of the blocking rule at each end of the field.

Well said Edward, TV commentators should be completely unbiased, do they not realise that these games are broadcast into Victoria now!!! I am seriously worrid about some of the screwy penalty counts this season. Tends to indicate bias as Hasler has indicated. Incidents like this and Cronulla not losing a penalty count all season ought to be investigated.

Obviously they forgot to tell the video ref about the bias when he awarded the dropped ball a try.
Poor bulldogs, they only got handed their last 2 games on a platter by the refs, they’ve had a tough run.
Some games have been ridiculous, and some teams like the roosters have serial offenders in their team so they can’t honestly be wondering where they’re going wrong.

The Broncos players never changed their line to impede the Storm chasers. The Storm player who was penalised went out of his way to do exactly that.

Looks really bad when you have the callers telling everyone it is a knockon, or the ball has been dropped and we all can see this, only then have the video ref award a try.
This game is eating itself alive.
Thenwatching the dogsa game, the ball flies 20 metres forward, then we have the refs let play go on only to go to the video ref.
The refs should be blamed.
They send knock-ons to the video refs.
The game has made a easy part of the game complicated, a knock-on is a knock-on, weather it comes off your hands, off someone elses hands or your Torso, it is still a knock-on.
This is what i keep whinging about, every week, every stuff-up.
The game cant have it both ways, if the ball comes off the chest or hand, it is a knock-on, and if it comes off the chest and is a knock-on, then you cant score off your chest, or Torso in this case.
Its ugly, it looks ugly on TV, the replay after replays are ugly. The video ref then awarding the try is ugly as weel, we all blame the refs which is ugly, mate, when is someone going to save rugby league from itself. ???

Anyone who thinks the refs aren’t targeting the Broncos has rocks in their head. Accidents might happen once or twice against a team over the course of a season, but not two weeks in a row, and not as often as they have in those two weeks.
Paul Simpkins was a disgraceful referee. I remember him stuffing the Cowboys around in the 2004 grand final.

Torso rule is the discretful rule in the nrl.The player lost control of the ball by trying to score and roll on his body is this a try?for me its a lost ball, scoring try its about having control of the ball in your hand and scoring the try.Im a big fan of nrl but different rulling and policies from the game seems to killed the spirit of the game make it boring for me.An example by trying to get rid of shoulder charge.
