Home finals are on the line this evening when Collingwood host North Melbourne tonight, with the Magpies looking to secure a top two finish, while a Kangaroos win will lock them in for September action. Join us from 7.30pm AEST for live updates and blog.

Both teams are coming off impressive wins last week with the undermanned Magpies pulling off an eight point victory against ladder leaders, Sydney Swans.

The Kangaroos defeated the Essendon, pulling away in the final quarter after an even game all day to win by 24 points.

Last time these two teams met was in 2011. In round 16 of that season, the Magpies destroyed the Kangaroos by 117 points. Kicking 22.15.147, the Magpies kept the Kangaroos to just 3.12.30.

It was North Melbourne’s lowest score of the season. This was not the first time the Kangaroos were thrashed at the hands of Collingwood.

The past four times these teams have met, Collingwood has won all four with an average winning margin of 78.

Dane Swan was best on ground last time gathering 39 touches and kicking two goals. When you lose by 117, it’s hard to take positives out of the game but Daniel Wells led the Kangaroos with 29 touches and Jack Ziebell 27.

Dayne Beams will be on a high after signing a three year contract extension and is coming off one of the best games of his career gathering 34 touches and kicking three goals. In the absence of Swan and Dale Thomas who was subbed out of the game early, Beams looks to be getting better as his season progresses.

He has flourished playing extensively in the midfield playing in the absence of Swan, Thomas and Scott Pendlebury throughout the year.

Although Swan and Thomas are big losses, the Magpies welcomed back a healthy Alan Didak who returned to his old self after entering the game as substitute last week.

Struggling with form, Travis Cloke managed just 10 touches but still managed to kick three goals and still looks well below his best.

Cloke can use this game as an opportunity to find some form after Kangaroos key defender Nathan Grima was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Darren Jolly will play after bruising his ribs against Sydney. Despite the rib complaint, Jolly played out the remaining half against the Swans and was critical in the dying stages of the match.

Against All-Australian ruckman Todd Goldstein, Jolly will need extended help from Chris Dawes in the ruck if he wants to be anywhere near his best come finals.

The Kangaroos have been the most stable team for the past few weeks but injuries have forced the omission of three critical players.

Grima, Leigh Adams (shoulder) and Daniel Wells (calf) will all miss this important match but the door has been opened for Jack Ziebell to return from this four week suspension, Lindsey Thomas and young defender Luke Delaney.

Ziebell hasn’t played any form of football over the past four weeks and will need time to get back to full match fitness.

In his absence, Sam Gibson and Sam Wright have flourished with the extra midfield time. Over the past four weeks, they have averaged 28 and 23 possessions respectively and both played a critical role in the final quarter last week against Essendon.

Drew Petrie remains in the Coleman medal race sitting second on the goal kicking tally behind Matthew Pavlich (57) with 54. If the Kangaroos are to pull off an upset, they will need a big game from Petrie who was below his best against Essendon when he was held scoreless.

Robbie Tarrant will need to stand up to draw attention from Petrie who together face the in form key defensive pair of Ben Reid and Nathan Brown.
