Essendon and Carlton have plenty to lose as the two clubs meet at the MCG this afternoon. We’ll have live scores from 1.45pm AEST.
A spot in the top eight would be put out of reach were the Blues to lose this afternoon, but a win would keep their finals hopes alive.
While the Bombers remain in the top eight going into this weekend, their form has resembled a downward spiral.
Another loss would extend that further and put their finals aspirations in serious jeopardy.
Clearly, this game will have major September implications.
The Bombers last week faced a hungry North Melbourne side and went down by 24 points, going a game behind the Roos in the process.
Jobe Watson stood out with 32 touches, while Alwyn Davey and Michael Hurley had three goals each.
For the Blues, last week they registered a 36-point win over the Brisbane Lions to keep their finals chances alive.
Bryce Gibbs, Heath Scotland, Andrew Carrazzo and Kade Simpson all topped 30 disposals. In the goal kicking department, Jeff Garlett and Eddie Betts both had three.
Returning for the Bombers this week is Patrick Ryder, Brent Stanton, Cale Hooker and David Zaharakis.
The big inclusion, though, will be Chris Judd for the Blues, whose four-game suspension is now over.

What a flogging! Thought the Bombers were stalling, but this is beyond a joke.
Makes Freo vs. Tigers huge for Blues fans. Lots barracking for Richmond I’d say…

Looking forward to this one. I had a crack at breaking down what’s gone wrong with Essendon in the second half of the season if anybody is bored out of their brain: http://wp.me/p2kfFk-6q
