Fremantle is still a big chance to make the finals, but need to keep their momentum going as they take on Richmond this afternoon at Patersons Stadium. We’ll have live scores and commentary from 4.40pm AEST.

There is plenty on the line for the Fremantle as they chance that final spot in the top eight. Last week we saw they could take it up to a top team like Adelaide on the road, only dropping off a little bit in the second half, but still being competitive for the game.

In the last 24 hours Freo coach Ross Lyon has labelled his defensive line up as soft. In fact, he singled out Michael Johnson, Paul Duffield and Zac Dawson saying they needed to lift this week to beat Richmond.

In reality, if they play the way they did last week against Adelaide, they should be able to account for the Tigers.

At home, the Dockers are a far stronger outfit. With Luke McPharlin coming back to strengthen the defensive line and Nat Fyfe returning into the midfield, Fremantle are looking stronger than a couple of the sides currently falling inside the top eight.

Aaron Sandilands has not been picked to play. Personally, I think that’s a positive for Fremantle – they look a more unpredictable unit with ‘Sandi’ playing. And to be honest, Aaron Sandilands isn’t the dominant ruckman we once knew him to be. His hitouts to team mates weren’t hitting the mark and his accuracy around the ground wasn’t quite up to his normal. We’ll find out next week if he’s the same, or back to his best.

Richmond on the other hand has once again teased the competition with how good they can be, but when the tests come, fail miserably.

Today could be the perfect example. Now that they’re out of contention for a finals spot (well, mathematically they could make it, but let’s be serious for a moment), they’ll more than likely throw up a good performance today.

And this is also an issue for Fremantle. At times in their history, they’ve promised plenty. But when given a golden chance to seize the moment, they’ve failed.

Richmond could act as Death over the next fortnight, as they could potentially kill off the finals chances of both Freo and Essendon (Friday night at the MCG).

In their last two matches, they’ve demolished their opposition (Brisbane by 8 goals and the Bulldogs by 70 points). They’ve also seen marked improvements in their midfield.

It could prove to be a battle between Ryan Crowley, one of the competition’s best taggers, and Trent Cotchin who is starting to really flourish in the midfield.

While the forwards could prove to be a crucial match up with Coleman Medallist probables Matthew Pavlich and Jack Riewoldt ready to contin
