Two of the competition’s young teams will look for a confidence-boosting win when the GWS Giants and Melbourne clash. We’ll have live scores from 2.10pm AEST.
A win for the Giants would place them above the Gold Coast Suns once again on the ladder, elevating them to three wins. The home ground advantage that Manuka Oval provides will be in their favour.
For Melbourne, they can’t climb any further this week, but a fourth win could provide a much-needed morale boost for their young playing group.
Certainly, being on the same number of wins as an expansion side so late in the season would hardly sit well with Mark Neeld and his men.
Last week, GWS went down to fellow new club Gold Coast by 30 points. Kevin Sheedy was left to lament that his side was not able to put together four quarters of strong footy.
Will Hoskin-Elliott had five goals and Jeremy Cameron, who is now done for the season, had three. Adam Treloar and Devon Smith were amongst the side’s best, the former having 32 disposals, seven marks and five clearances.
Melbourne got within 25 points of St Kilda last weekend, but were very slow out of the blocks: they had no goals at quarter time and only two at half time.
Sam Blease stood up to deliver five goals, while Jack Grimes (29 disposals) and Nathan Jones were also among the best.
Tom Bugg and Adam Treloar will join Cameron as an out this week for GWS, while Toby Greene is among the inclusions.
For Melbourne, key players James Frawley and Jack Watts are back.

Great crowd, great game, 2 powerhouse teams, sure the TV ratings were huge, just great stuff this AFL expnasion push. I am sure that RL player is definitely inspiring a generation of could be RL players to switch codes, genius marketing by the AFL. Via la expansion.

Considering the 14,600 who came out to watch the Suns v Giants last weekend, both taking up the bottom two positions on the ladder, the two newest teams with lowest support in the league, you’d have to say that the expansion is going all right so far.
That number is higher than the titans would get most home games (who are pushing for a finals berth and are winning games), and let us not even compare to the former GCU (who fiinished 3rd in their first two seasons).
Fox ratings were 167k. Not huge, but not embarrassing either. Just under what Penrith v Canberra got, but more than what the Warriors v North Queensland got – not too shabby.
A further 59k watched on 7Mate. That’s actually more than what watched Swans vs Collingwood later that night, in a more attractive TV time slot.
Not too shabby at all.
By way of comparison, 18k watched the Storm v Broncos in Melbourne on Gem on the same weekend, recalling that the Storm has now been in the comp for 14 years and have won premierships.
Not too shabby at all.

Lux, do you trust the crowd figure of 14,600 for the Suns v Giants match to be correct?

I was there, and yes, sounds correct. To be fair I thought It would be higher, given the atmosphere.

They made enough noise. As many have said, the stadium provides the official attendances, and generally speaking, there are revenue sharing arrangements in place: the higher the attendance, the more the AFL must pay the stadiums, so there’s not a lot of incentive for the AFL to encourage stadiums to overstate figures.
Anyone with any understanding of the AFL would also know that if there is one sport in Australia that doesn’t have to worry too much about its attendances – it’s the AFL.
Finally, despite this line being pushed constantly (by people who hate are are envious of the AFL’s success), to evidence has ever been put forward that the AFL dabbles in that sort of thing (although there is plenty of evidence of other codes doing it).

It must be extremely gratifying to prove a serial troll wrong again and again and again, well done.

they were nowhere near as brave as the 8,800 hardy souls who ventured out last night to watch the Raiders’ unlikely charge towards a finals spot.
