Refs must watch Pocock spoilers

Australia coach Robbie Deans has called on match officials to protect David Pocock at the breakdown and ensure New Zealand don’t try to take the Australian captain out of play in their Rugby Championship opener on Saturday night in Sydney.
During the mid-year Tests, Deans was vocal about how his champion No.7 Pocock was treated by the Welsh.
And he doesn’t want his most influential forward to be unfairly held out of the action the Wallabies fight to stop their Bledisloe Cup drought extending to 10 years and ensure their four-nations tournament campaign is off to a winning start.
“It’s not so much at the breakdown, it’s laying after the breakdown is over. The ball is gone and the game is carrying on and players are being denied the ability to participate in that game,” said Deans on Friday.
“That’s the touch judges’ responsibility because the referee is watching the game, which is somewhere else.”
Deans praised Pocock for his blossoming leadership skills in the absence of usual skipper James Horwill, but called on other senior Wallabies to stand up and be counted.
The All Blacks crushed Australia in last year’s Rugby World Cup semi-final at Eden Park and, if the Wallabies drop Saturday’s first Bledisloe clash, they face the frightening prospect of having to keep the series alive next week at their Auckland graveyard.
Kurtley Beale was absent from the 20-6 World Cup loss and Deans has identified the dynamic fullback, as well as halves Will Genia and Berrick Barnes ,as the players who need to be Pocock’s eyes and ears.
“David can’t do it all by himself … he needs people around him prepared to stand up and offer solutions because he’s got his head down quite often,” said Deans.
“The directors in the game, guys like Will, Berrick and Kurtley at the back – we rely on them to provide those sort of initiatives.”
Strike player Beale has had an interrupted season through injury and off-field drama but Deans is confident he can be the difference in a tough, defensive game.
Australia hold a 6-5 record over the All Blacks at ANZ Stadium but they’ve lost their past five matches against their arch enemy at the Olympic venue.
The Australian franchises failed to make a dent in the Super Rugby finals, but skipper Pocock says it’s allowed his squad to develop a strong bond in a longer build-up and take confidence from their series sweep of Wales.
“We’ve had a bit more time together and a lot of new guys have got a lot of exposure to how we do things,” Pocock said.
Deans played a straight bat to a verbal barb from counterpart Steve Hansen about his selections and All Blacks captain Richie McCaw also chose to stay out of the simmering rivalry between the coaches.
“I don’t get too carried away with individual battles, it’s Wallabies versus the All Blacks and that carries enough as it is,” said McCaw.

Hes know different from any other 7 in rugby, he’ll be targeted at the ruck area, the ABs are not into off the ball play! so don’t know where thats coming from, Wales may have done that but not the games i was watching. This sounds like Deans trying to get the ref on his side so as to let his boy have a free ride

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a coach say this unless his Captain wasn’t up to the mark himself? Some will likely jump on me for daring to say a less that glowing comment about Pocock in any form, but – I, like I believe Deans, think that Pocock is a long way off a natural captain. Many players can be on or off pitch leaders but the role of captain is a unique one. Not sure if it is just that he is too young or if he just doesn’t have the personality to do the job, but to date I am unconvinced and underwhelmed. I know they have been selling up the idea of Pocock as captain for years. But now it’s happening I’m not impressed.
At the Force he was given the opportunity to cut his captain teeth and it was a very slow, uncertain start. He admittedly got better and grew in confidence to a degree but he never looked to be captaining the side. He was never brining the man together to redirect or fire them up. He was always on the verge of captaining by committee before making most decisions. And alas when he didn’t he often seemed to make low percentage decisions that turned out not to be the right ones.
Even at the Wallabies I feel that he is far off the pace of being a motivational captain. Great player, but the leadership of a captain I’m just not seeing from my all seeing/knowing armchair of judgement.
Not sure if he will be the captain of the Brumbies next year or not? For the Wallabies sake if he is to remain captain after Horwill returns to fitness and form, then he is going to need a lot more super experience in the captain seat to get good at this role. He seems to be far from a natural.
I for one am happy that Genia and Sharpe are there to prop up Pocock at the moment. He alone at this stage would be a scary thing

Rubbish. The club was a mess Pocock gave them plenty of time to build a competitive side, they couldn’t do it and fair enough he left. Everyone wants to experience finals rugby.

Too true. Why should one of the finest players on earth HAVE to prop up a relatively meaningless team on the outskirts of the continent?

Perhaps Hansen should get the media to remind the referees to not give Pocock free reign either.

Since the Wallabies only have 4 class players Pocock, Genia, Ioane and Beale there is no doubt they will be targeted.
It is a shame that the AB’s could win easily playing legally but will stoop to cheating and off the ball play. They will hold Pocock back and lay on him more than 1 metre away from the ruck etc. They are the past masters at playing grid iron during rugby obstructing in attack and defence as if there is no offside line.

That’s hilarious, the other night on the rugby club they showed footage from Brisbane last year with Pocock pinning McCaw to the ground a metre from the ruck and McCaw unable to get up long after the ball is cleared.
Glass houses pal, glass houses.
Also running blockers ala Gridiron on the side of the rucks was created and mastered by the Brumbies during their reign.
How do you not walk into things all the time with only one eye?

AB’s obstruct everywhere not just at rucks. I think the crusaders were doing it well before the brumbies.
AB’s are best at cheating in the world, a major reason they are number 1.

You think? That’s your defense? Owen Finegan ran so many dummy runs through the defenders around the rucks, they should have called him blitzkrieg. He was through the other side ready to support the inevitable break.
All Blacks are number 1 because they cheat?
That comment is like 80% cocoa chocolate, sour and bitter.

PK, the ABs do not cheat, man they don’t need to. Just admit they’re better, smarter and not stuck behind the 8 ball. Richie being a true pro would not be happy with a win through cheating. Doing the hard yards is better and sweeter knowing you busted your gut, win or lose. If you were a true sport person, and you came out on the other side a winner knowing you cheated, would u feel good about it? So just shut it already

Watch the game tonight? Here’s a list of the Wallabies dragging players (completely illegally) off the edge of the ruck and tackle:
Simmons
Higgenbotham
Samo
Pocock
Genia
That was just from a cursory attention being paid to the issue.
Now Im sure the list of AB’s will just similar. Its called rugby and its’ a messy shitfight most of the time, especially around contact

The all blacks are the best cheaters in the world the referee line officials video official. must also qualify for the same title then again are they number 1 like the allblacks .
Deans got caught with his pants down in Auckland he didnt no how too counter the slaughter on Pocock and left him baited like a Bull too a red rag and Pocock responded geting blown off the park .Graham Henery ( henaki trap ).
The trouble with Robbie Deans glass house it seemed too shatter alot on him.

Katzilla – of course All teams ‘cheat’. But Aussie teams, including the Wallabies, cheat in a fundamentally fair manner.
And NZ? Well the way that they cheat is superior and unaustralian.
And another thing – I yell at games – but I never boo. But if any Aussies boo tonight at the game I’m sure it will be a fairer boo than the 2011 NZ boo.
Wish Mortlock was playing.

You Aussie guys are hillairious with your holier than thou attitudes, the reason we were booing Cooper was because he committed blatant thuggery against the AB skipper not once but twice then tried to say he didnt. C’mon guys we are all patriots for our team but some honest realism please. Are u telling me if an AB had knobbed Genia like that that you guys wouldnt have reacted the same
