With an eye on the top two, the Sydney Swans will not want to drop their game today against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium. We’ll have live scores and live commentary from 3.15pm AEST.
The Swans had a very keen eye on last night’s football as they saw fellow premiership contenders Collingwood and Adelaide both stumble.
While this will give them a boost in confidence that knowing a win can consolidate top spot, they will also be very wary of being at their best as they come into a very tough stretch to finish the home and away season.
Finishing off against Hawthorn and Geelong will not be easy, so making sure they get the job this afternoon is essential.
Last week their nine match winning streak came to an end against Collingwood with some of their star players accepting they were below-par.
Adam Goodes, Jarrad McVeigh and Lewis Jetta amonst those and they have put their hand up already for it. It’s rare to see the likes of Goodes and McVeigh turn in two bad games back to back, so expect to see a big lift from them.
The Swans see the return of Sam Reid into their forward line after some time off with a knee injury.
The Western Bulldogs on the other hand have had a horror last two months. They’ve now lost eight-straight games and in all reality, doesn’t look like stopping any time soon.
In fact they’ve had some beltings – losing to the Tigers by 70 points last week meant that the average losing margin since their win in Round 12 has been around 10-goals!
They can blame fitness to an extent as the second half performances have been woeful. Sure you can put it down to playing the youth as the season comes to an end, but the senior players have failed to stand up.
Today, they’ll need the likes of Matthew Boyd, Ryan Griffen, Bob Murphy and Daniel Giansiracusa to put in a big effort to slow down the Swans.
Whether that’s even possible is unlikely, playing at a venue like Etihad Stadium which is known for more free-flowing play under the roof.
Expect Sydney to win and win well. But, if the last 24 hours is anything to go by, it’s that nothing is certain in AFL… especially in the run to the finals.

FINAL | Sydney Swans 26.11 167 def. Western Bulldogs 13.7 85
So the Swans get the win against the Western Bulldogs to stay top of the table and almost assure themselves a top two spot. They have two ripping contests to lead them into the finals – at home next week against Hawthorn and then in Geelong against the Cats.
Next week’s contest against the Hawks will probably decide who is the premiership favourite – it’s 50/50 right now and shapes as the clash of the year.
For the Dogs, they finish the season off against Geelong in Geelong next week, then a tough finish against the Lions at the Gabba. You hope for their sake they can finish with a win. But it looks as if it will be 11-straight losses to end the season.
That’s our coverage of the Dogs vs. Swans from Etihad Stadium. More to come for AFL fans next weekend with some amazing contests – Richmond vs. Essendon on Friday night, the Swans and Hawks on Saturday twilight, the Eagles and Collingwood on Saturday night and a pivotal game on Sunday between the Kangaroos and Fremantle.

There’s the siren!
After a big challenge from the Doggies in the first 40 minutes of the game, the Sydney Swans stamped their authority on the contest.
The midfield battle swung in their favour dramatically, despite a 45+ possession game from Ryan Griffen, with Josh Kennedy, Kieren Jack and Luke Parker really upping the tempo of the game in their favour.
The Dogs still played alright today, despite being blown away in the second half. The margin flatters the Swans a little bit, but it shows how they can destroy a team so quickly.

Great chase from Jarrad McVeigh to win the footy off Ryan Griffen – that hasn’t happened too often today. Griffen hobbles off though after that. It will end up being 47 possessions for him today.
The Swans forward again as Shane Mumford gets free and takes the mark near goals… then slams it home for 25 for the match for the Swans!

His kick towards Jarrad McVeigh’s not great, but a slice of luck as he gets a free kick. Hard up in the pocket… oh WOW! That’s a fantastic goal!

Adam Cooney tries to spot up Addison… just needs a bit more game time to spot that sort of kick up. Good news though is that Daniel Giansiracusa was right near it. Gathers the footy off the ground, evades a tackler and kicks the goal for the Dogs.

Meanwhile, the Swans get out of a tight spot in defence to now go forward again. McGlynn kicks into the pocket and spots up Ryan O’Keefe.

Cooney kicks the ball inside 50 for the Dogs… a tough one to pick up on a two-on-two contest, but Gia’s got the chance, snaps to the top of the goal square towards SKINNER… not quite. Rushed through for a behind.
Then it’s brought back into the forward 50m for the Dogs, this time through Dylan Addison. In fact, he doesn’t even worry about spotting up a player… he goes for it himself and GOALS!

The Swans are red hot favourites. If they do get up and win well today, hopefully the Sydney media will be right behind the team. I must admit, I’m surprised there still isn’t much mentioned about the Swans. They’ve been far and away the best team in the competition in the second half of the season.
