The North Queensland Cowboys must snatch a rare win in Sydney if they are to keep their faint top four hopes alive when they face St George Illawarra Dragons. Join us for NRL live scores and blog from 7:00pm AEST.
Season 2012 appears all but over for the Dragons after stumbling their way to disappointing defeats over the past fortnight.
After securing a great win against Melbourne three weeks ago, the Dragons have suffered losses to the Roosters and Tigers and appear to be out of the running for a finals birth.
St George Illawarra now face a Cowboys unit well in the running for a top four birth, especially after their 52-6 demolition of the Warriors last week.
Despite their solid season thus far, North Queensland continue to struggle immensely when playing in New South Wales and really need to turn the corner tonight if they are to consider themselves premiership contenders.
Prediction
Since 2008, the Cowboys have won just six of 33 matches in NSW, so the Dragons will fancy their chances of ambushing North Queensland tonight.
The Dragons started well enough against the Tigers thanks to their strong play up the middle last week and will look to replicate that form again against the Cowboys.
If the Dragons can get a move on upfront, the inform Brett Morris will cause havoc on the edges against a Cowboys edge defence that is very penetrable.
Expect St George Illawarra to also play simple tonight in a bid to unsettle the Cowboys.
North Queensland love to play a high tempo game where Matt Bowen and Johnathon Thurston can take control of proceedings around the ruck.
The Cowboys however are not a fan of the arm wrestle and can lose their way in possession when opposition teams play a more territory based game.
If this contest remains an arm wrestle for the majority of the match, the Dragons should be favoured to secure a tight win.
With so much on the line for the Cowboys however, one expects Thurston and Bowen to guide North Queensland home in a scrappy contest.

Josh Miller, Ben Hornby, Matt Cooper, Dean Young all great players in their day but their day is over and Daniel Vidot, Chase Stanley are not up to first grade standard. I feel sorry for the players busting their guts and carrying these over the hill and below par performers. Wake up St George and replace Jeremy Smith, Darius Boyd, Neville Costigan, Jarrod Saffy, etc. with quality players and reward your loyal fans, Wayne Bennet is gone and so have our best performers get on with the job and do something about it!

The Cowboys have ended the Dragons finals aspirations with a 32-22 win at WIN stadium. The Dragons started the second half well and looked well on course for victory after Hunt crashed over in the second half. The Cowboys however regained their composure and on the back of Thurston and Bowen, were able to score two quick back to back tries to secure the competition points. The Cowboys quest for a top four birth remains alive but the Dragons season is all but over now. That is their third straight loss and now face a long fortnight before mad monday begins. Linnett, Tamou, Scott and Tate were very strong for the Cowboys, while Rein, Hunt, Creagh, Soward and De Bellin tried hard for the Dragons. Thanks for joining us for MNF.

I am a huge fan of the Mighty Saints and have been very happy with the way the Dragons have been performing for the past four seasons. However it is shocking to have witnessed how this season has unfolded for the two-time Minor premiership and 2010 Premiership winning Wollongong side. With that said, I am very hopeful for a win against the Cowboys tonight but I will not be surprised if we lose. Nevertheless, Go the Mighty Saints! Go Dragons!

The Cowboys lead the Dragons by two points in a game of two halves. The Cowboys dominated the opening 22 minutes and scored three tries with Bowen, Thurston and Linnett doing the damage. The Dragons however have hung in well and managed to dominate the remainder of the half thanks to Soward’s strong kicking game and the strong work from the likes of De Bellin, Rein, Merrin and Creagh. 5′ – Scott offloads to no one and the Dragons recover possession and they lose it shortly after. Cowboys will go back on the attack. Bad error from the Dragons there and they remain under pressure. Scott needs to just take the tackle sometimes.

I hope they do oikee a QLD team winning the NRL should soothe fellow rugby league fans in QLD in particular the Broncos. Who thinks by missing the finals the NRL become weak without there presence.
