The truth about the NRL TV deal announcement
By Dane25, 23 Aug 2012 Dane25 is a Roar Guru
157 Have your say
Don’t be fooled by Tuesday’s smiley press conference at NRL land. John Grant and his pizza-scoffing sidekicks are categorically dry-heaving about the new TV deal.
Much like the majority of the NRL fan-base, they think a large chunk of the particulars are badly foul and ignorant to the needs of the common follower.
In fact, some were ashamed to the point that a press release written in Greek and folded in to a paper airplane was suggested as the method of breaking the news.
I know this is hard to believe considering Grant seemed to be yapping and free-wheeling at yesterday’s unveiling. He had everyone thinking he was a man beaming with a billion smackers worth of confidence and contentment as he repeatedly winked at cameras and gave himself high-fives.
The fact of the matter is that he was in a state of delirium after being filled from neck-to-ankle with espresso after a night’s worth of legal uppers at the negotiation table. It was a shield of coffee bean bravado on show, and it was hiding away raw internal terror.
Grant and his suit brigade were so frightened to release the deal, secretly known on the inside as ‘Gyngell’s hostage demands’, that they went to the extreme of trying one of the oldest chestnuts from the PR manual. Knowing they were going to be caramelised by the searing pan of public opinion, they tried to slowly and carefully usher the news out into the world hidden in among much attention-seeking from the periphery.
We’ve all seen it before. Interest rate rises on Melbourne Cup day, government spending cuts as grand finals kick off and announcing Big Brother’s return in the middle of Australian medal ceremonies are some examples of PR gurus trying to pull the wool over our eyes. It’s a lazy man’s smokescreen.
So when the ARLC knew they had to tell the universe that we were all being cruelly locked in to another five years of Phil Gould’s ghastly rinse and Brad Fittler’s medicated babble, they panicked, necked a skinny cap and called in the experts to cover this ugly deal’s head with a towel and move it swiftly out the back door.
However, a regular decoy runner wasn’t going to muddle the picture. This was a monstro-pimple that required a one-tonner of PR Clearasil from the spin doctors.
It did take a while, but eventually, they got the newsroom combustions required.
Things started leanly. Brian McLennan getting the inglorious toe from the Warriors, followed by the NSW Blues naming their new coach?
OK, fair enough. Not total show-stoppers. Hold fire.
Then a lift in spirits. Former NRL CEO David Gallop being named as Aussie roundball’s new CEO?
Now we’re starting to register on the richter-scale. Load the weapon!
Ben Hornby announcing his retirement?
The nation’s attention is captured! Unload this story NOW!

The commission did their job, got to the million mark and some. They have a couple, more deals yup their sleeve.
If they fell short then we would have heard the screaming.
Look, the game is now in the hands of the fans and CEO’s running the game, lets see what happens now because we cant blame anyone but the game and fans now if it does not prosper.
If the game falters, you will just look at the crowds and memberships. Dont blame the Commission, they have done their jobs.

How can two delayed games and a further live game, all full of ads, promos and poor commentary be classed as a success?
All its proved to me is just how little they paid for the six year deal last time. With the exception of 20 rounds of fixed scheduling, night time grand final, it is the same product.

The commish sold out the fans for the big bucks they could have got a better deal for the fans , but Gyngall said if you want the money its my way or the highway . Yeh the NRL are laughing all the way to the bank ,,but please show me where the fans got anything !!

Problem with Foxtel is that to get the Rugby League broadcasts, you frst have to fork out good money for loads of crap that you don’t want, No choices, rental basic package, Sport. I told em I JUST want Sport, but no, I need to have the lot!. and believe me, lots of it is much worse than Ch 9 (I lie)…
Nothing better than being at the game $20 for parking, $50 per person for good seats, $24 for one round of drinks same for snacks, Kids want a team shirt $120. it just keeps mounting!, geez, no wonder crowds are down!
Sport needs fans and supporters. charging excessive prices for everything is not the way to attract more!

-Steve the fans do get something you get players like dollar bill williams in your game who love the money. Steve don’t you want the star players in your game who are the best. if you do you have to accept that men like SBW or should i say dollar Bill are money hungry players same with GI and thurston. That is what the fans get the best money hungry players and the most talented.
-If you don’t want SBW and aren’t willing to sign a big pay tv deal don’t complain when you lose money hungry “dollar bill wiliams after 1 year next year”. I want the sonny bill types in the game not the Paul Marquets or glen griefs those men are average and put me to sleep. But i want the SBW’s the GI’s, and billy slater’s but they cost money GI has had huge offers to go to French rugby, and we lost izzy folau too, and K Hunt, i want to keep these money hungry players in the comp, as they are the most talented but costs the mosts, so the fans didn’t lose they get men with the attitude of Dollar bill williams, GI, izzy folau and Karmihcal hunt types will stay.
-And maybe higher rep payments. Steve if i was a kiwi i would sell the kiwii jersey out every day of the week for the almighty dollar i would do a James Tamou every day of the week. So the fans win they get to have and maybe keep players like dollar bill williams in there game in the future, and have to put up with less gary larsons, dallas johnston’s paul marquet boring hardworkers, we get keep the flashy players who but bums on seats , long live money I say. money talks and we’ll take that $1 billion to keep the stars with the attitude of dollar$$ bill williams staying in aussy league not french rugby, and less of the boring workhorse less talented types who would play for less are just happy to be out there and money is not as important to them . But i love the attitude of Jerry maguire movie in which the footballers just say show me the money . SO money is no 1 you want the best players you have to pay them, and you need money to pay the dollar bill williams of this world steve.

Outside of those four designated live games on FTA, if a game features a non-Victorian team, then people from that city get to see that game on FTA. If it’s Perth or Adelaide, that’s on Ch 7, and if it’s Sydney or Brisbane, that’s on 7Mate.
There’s no doubting that AFL fans from Perth, Adelaide, and even Sydney and Brissie get looked after very, very well with live games.

GoGWS, you forget media rights haven’t been factored in.The cash component for the AFL TV part of the deal by my reckoning is $965 million, the NRL is $925 million by the way. So given the NRL has 2 less clubs, half the running cost, player payments of the AFL it looks great for the NRL.
I watched Manly v Broncos tonight and in the 1st half their was by my remembering, 1 ad (Coles), yes 1 ad. So looking at this, the NRL deal is a miracle and one can understand why Nine can only deal with 1 live game. Give them a break.

I crunched some numbers this morning and looking at the number of NRL games played over the next 5 years, the 1b plus change isn’t that great a deal. This game needs to be marketed overseas! So, we get 1b for the few measly million people from Brisbane, Sydney and a couple in Melbourne. Surely we could get that again from the other 6b people on the planet. The US, China and Europe needed a work over this round of negotiations. Instead, the cronies at 9 will continue to deliver poor coverage.

Boomshanka, we would all like to see live games but TV stations are in the art of business. Unfortunately our game is fast and not many natural ad breaks. We have to accept this. Possibly they will tweak the laws of the game or extend things like scrum breaks, who knows.
Lets just put our heads around this deal, we have doubled our money for the same things. Live sport is a premium and ch 9 haven’t even demanded this given the points above. They can’t, it wouldn’t be economical for them.
I don’t believe in over exposure. We still get 3 games on FTA live or near live. Look at our rival code. We see ads for it during prime, we see it factored into XFactor advertising, bombard bombard bombard but what about TV ratings in the north? Dismal. People start to dislike this. We are not Victorians. We have been brought up on choice.

Something stinks with the whole media deal.
The Department of Communications worked with the AFL, Seven and FOX to deliver live games to its fans under draft legislation and special dispensations, yet this NRL deal seems to have been done under the old outdated legislation which should have been repealed years ago.
No doubt Conroy will appear as a guest of Channel Nine at the AFL grand final as he’s done for the last couple of years, whilst the average rugby league fan (happy to pay for better coverage – but denied such) is shafted.

Rugby League needed a pay day first before we could think about sacrificing money for coverage etc. The AFL have had their paydays already and were able to negotiate a deal that beniffited them in more ways than financially.
If you yhink the ALRC isn’t happy,or if you aren’t happy, with a deal worth over billion then perhaps you should go and lie down.

Look. This deal is for rugby league. Because nine and fox has given up first and last rights and the billion plus $$$$ will grow the game over five years. I will predict now that the next deal will be for the fans as channel nine no longer has final say.
I also hope when the raise the salary cap they stick to their guns and raise minimum wages and more into super contributions rather then give the superstars a mil a year. Sure the superstars are exciting but I would prefer a champion team over a team of champions any day.
Go the doggies.

Yep the ball is firmly in the ARLC’s court. They know they sold out the fans to try and compete with the AFL’s deal. They weren’t leaving until they reached the magical $1bn mark and were happy to concede on nearly everything to reach it. But they now have the opportunity to do something worthwhile with the additional funds.
Hopefully they spend it wisely and we see dramatic improvements in the game over the next 5 years.
And one can only pray that Channel 9 are booted early from the negotiating table in 2018.

The fans whinge no matter what the game does.
To be honest, the game has listened to the fans way too much, it is obvious from what i have read in most blogs that the fans are greedy and cant be satisfied, they want more more more, without giving anything back, they dont even turn up to games.

oikee with all due respect you are the most negative league fan on the Roar. The last month we have been bombarded with daily comments about the game being amateur. Remember that??
Now the ARLC negotiate a $1bn deal (which they were always going to get, they weren’t leaving the room until they had conceded on nearly everything, and Gyngell knew that) and all of a sudden you are the head cheerleader.
I just pray they do something useful with the money. Cause from what I’m reading and hearing not much will change.

I always thought we were going to get nutted again.
Look, the game needs cash, it has never had cash to grow, never. The super league war nearly killed the code, it looked good because the players were getting more, then reality set in and clubs were on their knees.
I do care about the game, and i get negative because if the game did not change, we would be hanging on by a thread. Now the game is in our hands, our destiny.
No need for me to be negative. Or the fans. I thought this would change everyones opinions, i was wrong. I read about 30 comments on the fox site, everyone was negative.
These people need to change, they are turning into some ugly people.
It is like having Harrigon still incharge, he has no idea how badly he is running the refs. We need fresh blood i am afraid.
I have confidnece in Grant and co, i am afraid their might be even more unhappy fans, if they are not prepared to change, leave now, save us the ear bashing.

How’s it going to grow? We’ve established that the tv coverage is basically the same as we’ve had, so it comes down to what they will do with the extra cash. Given that the players will want a substantial pay rise, where will the rest go?

Ben,
Your spot on….
The super league put the game 10 years behind and with this deal we’ve been able to gain at least 5 years back…..
IMO the game has done it’s job with this deal it’s over to us (the fans) to complete the next chapter which includes buying memberships and attending games in mass. Once we achieve this then the ARL can take the next step which will be to make the game day experience, stadiums and facilities better.

I feel as though I am at JFK airport,.listening to the constant whine of jet engines, except it’s in print.Nagging housewives could not have scripted it better..
RL fans have continually complained about the lack of funding for the game,in the bush,in the cities,at grassroots level.loss of players to other codes, poor facilities etc.
The admin responds by getting the biggest deal in its history, with more to come, and pro rata a match for the AFL deal, and the A380 engines rev up and whine monotonously.
The fans are no worse off, with 3 thursday night games on 9,plus a stack of rl programs on 9 digital through the week..Yes the live FTA remains the same, but if it were all FTA live, the money deal would not have eventuated, and the status quo would exist in the bush,in the indeed cities etc.
if you havne’t got a grassroots you don’t have a game,.so you then have nothing to whinge about, because there is nothing.
Fair crack of the calamari ring,Gus Gould’s whining is beginning to sound like music to my ears,by comparsion to the constant”sky is falling in”routine, and that is indeed a worry.

Crosscoder the vast majority of the money isn’t ear marked for the bush or grass roots it is ear marked for the clubs. I think that is the concern from some.
This seems to be a deal that delivers:
- is a massive upgrade for current players and NRL clubs (7 of which are private).
- Potentially some benefit for grass roots (according to the article yesterday it is a paltry sum in the sub 5% of the total deal range)
- No benefit for TV viewers of the game, no detriment either mind you but no benefit
Am I unhappy with the outcome no but nor is there anything in here that say’s rugby league has been able to deliver something for me to be excited about with this deal.
If coles came out and said we are going to triple the salaries of staff (who are already the best in the world at what they do) but don’t worry it will have no effect on anyone else you do think Coles shoppers, suppliers and shareholders take to the streets cheering like it’s the Sydney Olympics?
What would have made me happy is something negotiated to deliver a more balanced return to all stakeholders of the game, understanding that the NRL was always going to be major beneficiary.
If we see a substantial increase in funds ear marked for community involved, local clubs and grass roots then my opinion changes with those facts.

League fans just love the negatives, they grew up with them, they understand them, its all they have ever known.
I have thought about this, and i asked the question today on another blog, when was the last time league fans got excited about anything to do with the game, outside their own team, even back to super league. ?
I cant remember any excitement really, growth, expansion, extra cash, ?
It is always a negative backward game, refs, players, admin, everything has always been the negative.
This is leagues problem, even a possitive like 1 billion is negative to the fans.

Also Oikee, it could be you focusing on the negatives from people and then amalgamating them into the anti fan.
The game – I think is great. It’s why I don’t care about the 30 players that leave over the course of a decade, it hasn’t affected the quality of the game one bit. It’s why I still watch even though my team is crap.
The Refs – I think it is almost the attention on it that is yielding the concern, refs always have and always will make errors, the more we focus on it the more it. classic confirmation bias.

You could be right in your first paragraph.
As affecting the quality of the game, mate come on, of course it does, my Broncos are absolute crap without Lockyer. And i cant see them winning buckleys until we find another Lockyer, you dont know whwere we might find one. ?
No, of course not, and i have not seen another Sonny Bill running around yet, maybe Tarriq Sims, we might find out if he is not always out injured. And Falou, i am still waiting for another to fill his shoes,.
Come on, the qaulity dies a little every time a player is lost.
Our code has not even be able to afford a halves academy. We need one, Wallace at the Broncos tackling front rowers is not a good look, he must of been tackling wild bulls on a farm before he came to our club. ?
Mate, i am begging for quality.
Plus Inglis, i see when we could not afford him we replaced him with quality, broken down Jack Reed who spends more time on the sidelines injured than Hodges these days. Mate dont even start me on quality.

so in other words you think the game is crap but I’m being negative because an increase in salary cap will:
- halt the aging process in the likes of Darren Lockyer and make our legends literally immortal enabling them to play for perpetuity
- stop players the bronco’s were trying to poach from signing with other teams
- compete with the reported 2m a year offered to Sonny Bill (which he turned down to play for the ABs)

mushi.
The breakup has not been decided at this point in time.
Rest assured the delay or holding back on expansion,is to ensure the clubs are financially undrerpinned, the players receive their just dues, and already Grant has stated they have set up a 10 point plan for the growth of the game in west Sydney.
Both Grant,Mattiske and even Gyngell even emphasised the importance of grassroots.
The code had $20m in the bank prior to the SL war, which was eventually gobbled up in the mad dash for cash.
The game has now 20 rounds scheduled in adavnce ,none of this 5 week stuff ahead. That is a plus for fans.
The code will be receiving $90m cash in advance next year for grassroots and a war chest.
i can’t believe you can criticise what the players may receive ,when no decision has been made, as to the allocation via grants to the clubs.
I cannot for my life see where any top line player will have his salary tripled. Are you telling me Slater ,purprotedly reported to be earning ATM (including 3rd party),will jum to $2.7m .No way Jose.
You TBH have the cart before the horse.Intense negoatiations between the RLPA and the ARLC will eventuate in the final player deal.
The code has only been notified they have a deal 2 days ago.Grant was involved in junior rugby league and helping a local rugby league club in his younger days in Qld.He has been made aware of the problems at grassroots level.
If anything the last NRL admin, was guilty of being naive, about other codes making inroads at grassroots.ït’s not a problem”they argued.
if Coles pay their managers and staff double, and their price of lamb and beef drops at the same time, and the shareholders continue to receive their growing franked dividends(thanks Wesfarmers),then everyone from staff,to consumer benefits.)Except perhaps the poor old cocky.
Shareholders complain if the dividend is not increased. If it is,they have no objection as to staff and exec salaries increasing provided not going overboard. It means the company profits continue to grow.
I do not see or hear shareholders in CBA whinge when the CEO gets a huge salary.Their dividends maintain growth. The customers yes..
The ARLC has received a big increase in income. This means they will have to pay a new CEO a lot more than Gallop.Their players ditto, and their support staff.Grassroots is part of the base of the code,if you believe it will receive a pittance ,then I disagree.
How about we actually see what comes out in the financial wash.We are shooting santa Claus before he has had time to distribute the goodies.
Your last para, says it all, cart before the horse.Give it time my friend..
Let me just emphasise the point, should by any stretch of the imagination, the ARLC pays lip service to grassroots,I will be the first to scream blue bloody murder.
I quote Grant”the cash that comes from the agreement ,used wisley, will provide a funding base to sustainably grow our game from its GRASSROOTS to the ELITE level.”.

I’m glad you completely missed the point of my analogy because you’ve actually just argued my point.
What actually happened at Wesfarmers was that execs got rewarded, shareholders got rewarded and money was put back into the business to ensure long term viability. That is exactly what I’m saying I want to see happen – a balanced return to stakeholders. Woohoo you admit that is how it is supposed to happen.
Thank you for inadvertently getting the point.
As for your shareholders tolerance of salaries:
“I do not see or hear shareholders in CBA whinge when the CEO gets a huge salary.Their dividends maintain growth. The customers yes..”
Last AGM was November last year where north of 400m worth of stock voted against the remuneration package. Sure it isn’t enough for a strike but with high retail shareholder bases, which is far less likely to be active voters as most things get filed in round filing cabinet in the kitchen, you’re always pretty safe (hence they rejected shareholder proposed salary structures).
I’m sorry if coverage in every major paper with a financial section and on most financial news channels didn’t allow you to “see or hear” about any shareholders objecting.
“ I quote Grant”the cash that comes from the agreement ,used wisley, will provide a funding base to sustainably grow our game from its GRASSROOTS to the ELITE level.”.
You also gave me a spiel from another source once before to the effect that the centre fo excellence debts couldn’t affect the football club. Despite you know, anyone with 30 minutes experience being able to call BS on that.
This quote is little more than rhetoric. It could be summaries as this is a pancea for everything. Beauty queen hopefuls have delivered more detailed plans for world peace than this.
As I said – if the numbers that have been quoted are wrong then my opinion regarding the deal changes. There are no numbers here and no actual commitments.
I apologise if my read of the figures are wrong, this is based entirely on those reported here on the roar by the “experts” if they have lied or mislead me then yes, as I said my opinion changes.
I apologise that my comments read as criticising what the players receive rather than more a criticism of what was reported that the grass roots receive. I really don’t care what the players receive in an absolute sense but hope that the future of the game, in a relative sense, receives a material benefit.

Ok oikee, I normally don’t agree with much that u say,AND once again this is the case. The fans don’t expect much, we want more live games!! It is because of us that the nrl got the billion $$ deal!!! If it was not for us tuning in week in and week out , channel nine would not have the millions of people watching the game and therefore could not offer such a high $$ for the rights!! I agree that alot of people are just bitching on about stuff they have no idea about, and will complain just to be heard. I think the over all deal is great and could really benefit the league if used wisely, but do not think for a second that the viewers need to get to games as the money earnt from gate takings is a pittance to the money given to clubs from the nrl. And once again if there is no audience there’s no billion $$$$$.
Lastly , I think channel nine can save face by asking the nrl to shift the Sunday game kick off to 410pm so there will be two live games.
