New Zealand ran away from the Wallabies during their Bledisloe Cup test match at Eden Park in Auckland (AAP Image/SNPA, Ross Setford).
Related coverage
The Wallabies came to Eden Park ready to play on Saturday night but, once their spirit was broken, they were powerless to stop the All Black machine clinching a tenth successive Bledisloe Cup with an emphatic 22-0 Rugby Championship triumph.
The 29th-minute sin-binning of stand-in Wallabies’ captain Will Genia proved a turning point, as dynamite New Zealand No.12 Sonny Bill Williams ran riot in the midfield in what was, for now at least, a fitting farewell to Test rugby for the NRL-bound star.
Israel Dagg scored the only try and five-eighth Dan Carter booted five penalties and finished with a personal haul of 17 points as the Wallabies sank to their 14th straight loss to New Zealand at Eden Park and 14th successive defeat to the All Blacks across the ditch.
Despite their decades of darkness in Auckland, it was the first time in history the Wallabies have been kept scoreless at Eden Park – and they were lucky the scoreboard didn’t blow out further.
With yet another Bledisloe out of reach and their points-less Rugby Championship campaign on life support, the pressure on Wallabies’ coach Robbie Deans is sure to intensify.
Australia were physical early but were once again punished in the territorial battle.
They struggled to hold their own in the scrum and Quade Cooper’s much-hyped return failed to inspire a lifeless attack.
In a throwback to last year’s World Cup horrors, the five-eighth was once again hounded by a packed-out Eden Park crowd, especially when he was sat on his backside by Kieran Read and then Williams in the first half.
With their backs to the wall, the Wallabies produced some gritty goal-line defence in the opening 40 minutes with Adam Ashley-Cooper and Sitaleki Timani producing brilliant try-savers.
But when Genia was yellow-carded for a professional foul with the Wallabies down just 3-0 – the All Blacks smelt blood and pounced.
The home side forced some basic mistakes from the Wallabies before halftime to take a 9-0 lead to the break and – when Carter booted a monster penalty from 52 metres out, one minute into the second half – the writing was well and truly on the wall.
Two surging runs from dual international Williams opened the way for fullback Dagg to cross untouched next to the posts in the 46th minute and virtually sealed the deal at 19-0.
Drew Mitchell’s return was short-lived – leaving the field in the first half with a leg injury.
Liam Gill earned a debut and David Pocock’s replacement Michael Hooper showed his promise at No.7.

First thoughts: End of Barnes against ABs. Forwards played with commitment this week. There was a contest at most rucks.
But backs went even further backwards. Totally unimaginative & unintimidating bunch. Genia and many more way over rated at present. Would not make it to 1st grade in NZ CLUB RUGBY.

If you happened to catch the ITM match between Otago and Northland before the ” test” You saw a better example of rugby than was produced in the Test because both sides competed. Pretty hard for one team to be expected to entertain us without some help from the other 15. Wallabies woeful…..again!

It was as if a team of 110 IQ players was playing a team of 90 IQ players – Wallabies lost through the top 2 inches.

Every Waratah that touched the ball kicked the bloody thing. Timani stood up but Dennis and the rest of the Waratah mob were woeful. Why Deans persists with these guys is no longer beyond belief as it’s now just par for the course. I think the only way to get rid of him is perhaps they sneak onto the aircraft at the airport on the way home and leave him there.
Quade Cooper couldn’t do a great deal but Digby was dangerous on numerous occasions. Scrum pretty much held its own and the lineout was an improvement. The collision area was lost to the ABs. Let’s be realistic here, the ABs are an awesome side at the moment and I will be interested to see how South Africa fare against them. They ooze talent all across the park.
Whilst I take nothing from the AB performance, I remain totally lost as to why the Wallabies are stacked with players from a franchise that has little clue about winning and unfortunately that showed tonight. Realistically, the Reds and Brumbies should have made up the majority of Wallabies and then a few fill ins from the other franchises.

Mindset is an important aspect of the game. A winning mindset provides confidence and determination. Do you really think the 8 Waratahs bring that to the table, Johnno? The lineout wasn’t awful, it was better. Didn’t say it was great. Dennis was very average. Why Higgers was replaced was a little puzzling. And to your final sentence…bring it on

This generation simply doesn’t have the talent – end of story! They try hard but are incapable.
We just have to suck it up – Rugby in Australia has moved away from its supporter base in Brisbane and Sydney and is now paying the price.
The expansion to other non-rugby paying states has killed the game.

For a cricketer getting off the mark is important. It means thankfully the embarrassment of a duck is avoided.
Same in rugby. A team has to get on the board. The Wallabies needed to get at least one penalty goal. For the rest of their lives this Wallabiy team will be known as the team kept scoreless at Eden Park in 2012. Unfortunately the media tomorrow will be full of the fact they were kept scoreless. How can they not be aware of that? It could easily have been avoided.

Now you Rugby fans know the reason Rugby League reigns supreme in Aus and can fetch over a billion dollars in tv rights. I do feel sorry for the ARU though, it must suck all the best athletes run toward league and leave the ARU with only a handful of decent players to chose from. Rugby is sucha boring sport with ppl being sent off for the most smallest of offenses and the refs blowing on whistles like Elton Johns blowing #$#%s. Our league boys would never let these Allblacks intimidate and bully them around like most of these spoilt rich kids wearing Wallabies jerseys. Its the very reason there are so many fights in the Kangaroo vs Kiwi games, they dont take any crap from the kiwis and will punch on before being bullied unlike these softies.

Nothing wrong with Rugby Union bud…. its chess compared to league’s checkers – but you are right – its a real pity that the rest of your Aussie athletes are busy playing with themselves in a code and a sport ( Aussie Rules) no one else gives a crap about.
I will also agree that your rugby players are far too matey matey with the AB’s… they tackle a guy and then help him up with a smile – screw that ! Although i dont condone dirty play but your guys could take a leaf from the Boks and show a little more intimidation, ahhhh good ol’ Bakkies Botha !

Why would you come onto the Union board just to slate it? Both codes have their strong points and that’s why you have fans on either side. Union fans love the constant contest for the ball at the breakdown and scrums, it’s unpredictable and the game can change at any moment, the power and stength used to win the ball is exciting, something that league lacks. The running game in league is better but that’s not what union is all about. League is huge in Australia but no one cares about it anywhere else in the world so don’t get ahead of yourself. Both games have something to offer and neither are going anywhere so it’s pointless to bash codes.

I don’t know about people shunning ‘Thugby League’- even your All Blacks want to ditch rugger to embrace the greatest game of all. Of course, Sonny Bill is going to have to join one of the less competitive clubs in the NRL until he gets back up to speed, but he clearly believes that playing for a mid-level NRL team is a step-up from playing for the absolute highest tier of Union.
Good on him, I say, for not sticking with the soft option.

Funny how all these NRL converts who play NZ rugby keep coming back to it despite the fact they make less money then they would in France!!!
And by the way, SBW won’t need to come up to speed because he hasn’t been playing rugby in Aust.

Good on him for making money while he can I suppose, but don’t ever think he gives a stuff about one code over another, just what has a bigger long-term impact on his bank ballance. Personally, I say good riddance, good luck and goodbye.

It’s time for change …… question is do u do it now or at end of year!!!
Genia is a shocking captain and played his worst match I have ever seen and agree not in good form should be benched , Cooper was …..????
Beale is still in the clouds bereck Barnes still kicks . So did everyone in the back line when the got through they kicked and kicked and kicked ….
Most embarrassing performance I have ever watched they gave up after 15 into the 2 half .. Barnes cooper genia Beale adam Ashley copper absolute rubbish…
I really believe the allblacks where more shocked in how they completely destroyed and dominated Australia rather than winning the cup .
Forwards better and a least there r some good new players that came in and did something .

change the program .. i was a huge deans fan waited patiently for 4 years . saw the side as we all have , battle through injuries . battle through inexperience young players . waited for deans policies to kick in ,saw us regain the tri nations , saw a immature team get blown out by the allblacks in the rwc semi final . but coming into this year the wallabies i thought would be older .hungrier
experienced and more dominate . well so far this year reads 3 losses 3 wins . not exactly a world number 2 stat.
how i see it is do we all think and see deans as coach of the wallabies for the next rwc . i dont …so lets start now and take the next 3 1/2 years now , we obviously need to rethink our strategies now so i say give it to the new coach. an australian one .

Pretty sloppy first half from both sides but a very good dominant second half by the All Blacks, just lacking the execution which i hope is just around the corner.
Positives.
Wallabies.
Timani was outstanding and done a mountain of work and put in a solid effort for the whole game. Hooper was good also.
All Blacks.
Messam was busy and he is really getting stuck in where in the past he has gone missing in the black jersey.
Aaron Smith is outstanding and his sharpness around the paddock is second to none.
Dagg is a classy customer and i was very impressed with both our two young locks both getting stuck in and doing a mountain of work in their half game.
All Blacks bench players all come on and played well, i would like to see Ben Smith and Tamati Elison get a run next time.
Negatives.
All Blacks
Execution has been letting us down the past two weeks.
Mealamu needs to work on his timing with his jumpers.
Wallabies.
Kicking the ball back to guys like Jane and Dagg is suicide. They need to back themselves more.
Ioane was involved too little too late, he is a weapon and the ball needs to find its way to him in space.
Some key players look down in the dumps, form is lacking, attitude is lacking.

Timani was quiet in the second 40 – it’s a sign of his lack of fitness – but he was outstanding in the first half.
But I will concede that I was wrong to question his inclusion – if the new Waratahs and Wallaby coaching staff can get his fitness up to scratch he will be a good lock (or even no.8).
