A blockbuster with major ramifications for how the top four will shape up is here as the Sydney Swans host Hawthorn. We’ll have live scores from 4.40pm AEST.
The winner of this one will have a golden path to the minor premiership. They’ll only have to win their game next week to confirm it.
Beyond that, it could give us an insight into what could happen in finals footy. Both clubs appear to be genuine premiership contenders.
Simply put, this is a huge game.
Last week the Swans registered an 82-point win over the Western Bulldogs. It was a strong response to their loss against Collingwood a week earlier.
Adam Goodes showed signs he’s returning to form with 22 disposals and three goals against the Dogs. Josh Kennedy had 34 touches, while Mike Pyke and Shane Mumford also had three goals.
The Hawks had a comfortable win themselves, beating the Gold Coast Suns by 64 points.
Luke Hodge and Brad Sewell both had 35 disposals and Jack Gunston had four goals. David Hale and Jarryd Roughead were also influential.
The Hawks look set to finally welcome back Lance Franklin, with Sam Mitchell and Josh Gibson also returning. The Swans have made no changes.
Earlier this year, Sydney upset Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium in a 37-point win. But the Swans are a known threat now, so we can expect a more focused Hawthorn outfit this afternoon.

Chris Donlon confirmed he will not be umpiring finals after his appalling decision handing Hawks a vital goal at the end after a nice bit of Hollywood work by Puopolo so that is a relief. Why is it that Dean Margetts has decided the pack can scramble around for a full 8-10 seconds longer than any other umpire? It is wrong that there is such inconsistency in this most basic are of the rules and that extended scramble just puts all player at risk.

A couple of bad umpiring decision in that last quarter.
Puopolo’s free kick in the square was a woeful decision.
Also Reid should have got 50 when Burgourne kicked the ball away.
Still great game, Swans have to learn to tighten up in the centre clearances. Cost them in the 2nd Qtr and cost them at the death.

Yeah, shocking umpiring. Lucky we didn’t have anything really ridiculous happen like a kick to Franklin in the forward 50 being judged to have travelled less than 15 metres when it clearly covered the required distance. Oh wait…

There is no way it travelled 15 metres.
The camera shot running directly down the ground showed that.
None of the commentators had a problem with it.
In fact Paul Roos criticised the player who kicked it to him for making a bad decision.
That one they got right.
However in the interests of fairness, Mike Pyke’s push out of Hodge was one they missed,

So there it is! The Swans supporters were impressive – but then they showed all the Hawks supporters at the end. Hope this is the GF

Very disappointing effort by the Umpires, ruined what should have been a great game with really bad unfair decisions. Hawks player handed a goal right infront, despite being tackled. Reid held up badly for play near goal but not handed 50 metre penalty depite the Swans being penalised previously. There were other poor decisions but these had the most impact, 2 goals. When are they going to get more competent umpires, and umpires who are NOT ALL MELBOURNE BASED. I would love to be able to watch a game and know that it was going to be fairly & competently umpired , all the field umpires were from Melbourne, and frankly they were dreadful. This game was ruined for me because as well as the Swans played, it felt like they were playing the Hawks and also the Umpires.Which is not fair. If the AFL want to spread this game they need to do better with their umpires and match review because if this continues they will loose the Sydney fans. If it had been left to the play between the teams determining the outcome it would have made all the difference in the world to my feelings on this game, but now instead I wonder if the Swans will be given the same opportunity to win as other teams. Few if any commentators are going to comment on this as they are mostly all Melbourne based & they don’t seem to care, unfortunately either do the AFL ! So disappointed in the umpiring but not the Swans very gutsy!

I agree Jet, the umpiring was a disgrace, but you’re going to hate this, Hawks got the raw end of it. Free kick count was stacked in ur direction. We got one holding the ball call all night.

Yes the Swans were favoured in the free kick count and we could debate some of those decisions, but this did not have the impact on the game as the decisions that went against the Swans. These umpiring decisions were wrong, wrong wrong! However I personally would much prefer to be debating the players not the umpires and this is really what makes me so angry. This game and many others should be talked about because of the great players and the game but instead we have these dreadful umpiring decisions that ruin the games. Of course both the Swans & the Hawks were great and they deserve better. It is time the AFL got serious with their part of the game and encouraged more retiring players to become umpires, and made it a fulltime profession. I have seen too many games ruined by poor umpiring decisions, they could also look at their match review panel as they have made some appalling decisions also.
