The final spot in the top four goes on the line when the West Coast Eagles host Collingwood at Patersons Stadium tonight. Join us for live scores and a blog from the commencement at 7.40pm AEST.

With two games to play, the Eagles (14-6) currently sit in fifth place on the ladder with a percentage of 124.97, with Collingwood (15-5) one spot ahead of them but with an inferior differentiator of 119.28.

No team has ever won the AFL under this finals system from outside the top four, so getting the double chance is more than worthwhile and that is why this game is season-defining.

Should the Eagles win tonight, they will replace the Pies in the top four and travel to the MCG next Friday night knowing victory against Hawthorn will lock-up their place in the four.

Collingwood play the competition’s most out-of-form team in Essendon next Saturday at the ‘G.

Because West Coast have a poor record in Melbourne and Hawthorn are both a team good and MCG specialists, the Pies will be hopeful of a top-four finish even if they don’t win tonight but Nathan Buckley will keen to put to the double chance to bed in Perth.

The Eagles season has been sabotaged by a string of injuries to major posts inside 50 and in the midfield but the return of some of those guns has coincided with a return to form for West Coast in recent weeks.

Two weeks ago, John Worsfold’s men accounted for high-flying Geelong in a close encounter before taking the obligatory four points against Port Adelaide last week by 48 points in the South Australian capital.

Tonight the Eagles will be buoyed by the return of power forward Josh Kennedy, who has missed the majority of the season with an ankle injury sustained in round five.

In-form on-baller Matt Rosa and Sam Butler are also inclusions for the Eagles. Bradd Dalziell, Ashton Hams and Jacob Brennan make way.

The Pies have made of plenty changes as well. Reigning Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan returns from a two-week club-imposed suspension and is joined by quality backman Alan Toovey, Ben Johnson and Tyson Goldsack.

Darren Jolly has been rested – indicating the Pies believe they will finish fourth regardless of the result in Perth – and Cameron Wood replaces him. Captain Nick Maxwell succumbs to a groin injury; Marty Clarke, Jamie Elliot and Caolan Mooney join him as omissions.

Collingwood were beaten handsomely by North Melbourne at Etihad last Saturday night. North are best Docklands team in the comp and are playing like world-beaters at the moment but the Pies were disappointing in that 30-point defeat. Prior to that, Collingwood were valiant in victory in Sydney against the Swans.

But that Swans win aside, the Pies have failed to inspire in recent times. And perhaps, if you put that win against Sydney down to their seven-year dominance over the Swans, you could confidently say the Pies are in average form.

They’ve won three of their last five – one against GWS and the other two by less than ten points in less than convincing fashion. Along with that loss to North, they were smashed by Hawthorn five weeks ago.

These two teams played in June. Collingwood held off a fast-finishing Eagles team at the MCG by three points in a thriller.

Tonight I’m tipping the Eagles. I think West Coast are building good momentum and in front of a typically parochial home crowd can get up by 23 points.
