Souths are flying toward the finals and face one of the disappointments of the 2012 season in the Knights.
Can the Novacastrians find something on ‘Old Boys Day’ or will the cardinal red and myrtle green blow Wayne Bennett’s boys off the park?
Newcastle have definitely missed captain Kurt Gidley’s leadership and grit this year, but its not much of an excuse considering the talent the side possesses.
Veteran forwards Willie Mason and Danny Buderus have been rock solid for the Knights but they simply haven’t seen enough from the likes of Darius Boyd and Jarrod Mullen. These two men will have to be perfect if they are to down the Bunnies.
The Rabbitohs boast two of the most devastating attacking weapons in the game and will be key components going into September. Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess have been simply dominant recently and both will be looking for big games again.
A win for the Rabbitohs will guarantee a top four finish.
For Newcastle, it’s all about getting into the arm wrestle. The home side cant afford to get into a shootout with the dangerous Rabbitohs as they simply wont win. An arm wrestle is just what Michael Maguire wants though heading into the playoffs.
Facing Buderus, Mason and Neville Costigan is just what Souths need.
A problem the Rabbitohs face, however, is which of their playmakers turn up. The ever impressive Adam Reynolds and a switched on John Sutton? Or the two morbid souls that trotted out a few weeks back against the Cronulla Sharks?
On that night Reynolds and Sutton refused to test the line and resorted to the bomb all evening. Souths lost the game and could face a similar result if they don’t bring their A-game.
It’s a stretch though considering where these teams are at in their season. The Knights are arranging Mad Monday and the Rabbitohs have an eye on the Telstra Premiership trophy.
Can the Rabbitohs fire again or will they beat themselves?

I predicted at the beginning of the season the Rabbits would be in the final and then I predicted that they would WIN the Grand final. It’s the Rabbit’s time and they know it! The power of a little faith, a little magic and Russell Crow! By the way, you can’t just BUY players. I mean, it still has to be within the cap. I just think credit should be given where credit is due instead of being bad sports!

Are you saying this was a BIG game? Against Newcastle? Really!?! Souths have a long way to go yet to impress. Can’t see them getting past Dogs, Storm, Manly. They have purchased most of their good players and modern history (NRL) shows you can’t buy a premiership.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have run out 12 point leaders over a gallant Newcastle Knights outfit at Hunter Stadium and head into the Finals with a real mongrel about them. When the game was on the line, the Rabbitohs fired and were simply too good for the home side.
Issac Luke had an immediate impact when he came onto the field. Sam Burgess and Roy Asotasi were monstrous up front while John Sutton had another very impressive game at five eight.
The Knights tried hard but simply couldnt do enough with a massive wind behind them in the second half. Souths played the way plenty expected them too tonight and now know how to win the big games over the next month.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs lead the Newcastle Knights 12-6 at the break after an entertaining half of footy. Souths controlled the early running and looked dominant. Burgess, Asotasi and company continually rolled the ball down field and before long the Rabbitohs had a 12 point lead.
Newcastle to their credit though hung tough and despite a controversial try to Darius Boyd, only trail by a converted try.
Souths should be leading by more but some of their last tackle options, especially deep in the red zone, have been amatuerish to say the least. Adam Reynolds needs to stand up and lead Souths home against a monster wind and a committed Newcastle outfit.
