The GWS Giants close out their inaugural season against a finals-bound North Melbourne on the rebound from an unexpected loss. We’ll have live scores from 4.40pm AEST.
The youngest team in the comp face a more mature side that’s gearing up for their first finals assault as a group.
For North, a massive win could elevate them into the top six, earning a home final, pending other results.
If those results don’t go North’s way, then it will at least serve as a test for Brad Scott’s men after their winning streak was ended by Fremantle last week.
The Dockers won by 53 points to secure their place in September, holding Drew Petrie goalless along the way.
Andrew Swallow was the main man for the Roos, with 30 disposals and 13 tackles. Scott McMahon and Scott Thompson were solid in defence, while Lindsay Thomas and Lachie Hansen booted three goals each.
The result moved Freo ahead of North on percentage, which may become a factor throughout round 23.
The Giants last week got off to a shocker of a start against St Kilda, with the outlook barely improving afterwards.
The final margin was 128 points, but it was a whopping 93 points at half time.
Toby Greene still managed to rack up 34 disposals, Taylor Adams had 27 and a goal. Adam Treloar was the only multiple goal kicker with two.
North have made no changes and the Giants have made seven.

Black armbands on Norths guys for Henry Hardiman. Was the oldest living former norths player and VFL umpire in the 30′s. Passed away in the week leading up to the game. He remained a devout norths fan for his entire life (to the chagrin of his Carlton loving wife), and had an unending library of football stories to tell.
rip pop.

I am only judging crowd break-down by what I have seen on TV this year. So can we assume that this year the lower attendances at Suns’ games means there are less Suns’ supporters attending? Probably a fair assumption, given that they are near the bottom of the ladder, when expectation would have been for some progress. And I understand Titans’ crowds are down on average this year also.

Who ever thinks afl don’t gave a following on the gold coast ate delusional !! Sure, there are a lot of people who follow other teams but that’s to be expected, given there was no local team to follow. I play baseball and there are a few guys who are born and bred here that follow afl and a few of those are suns supporters. My son plays local Aussie rules and a strong junior comp with several local born and bred dads bringing their sons down to okay afl… A few of those because the local league clubs are poorly organized . Once their sons played they have loved it and of course the dads have started following. Afl is big here don’t you worry and the suns are going great!!

The Giants have the backing of the AFL and a full book of sponsors. Don’t worry about their future, it is assured as long as AD is in charge of the game. Also like any Sydney team in any sport the crowds will come when the wins come. Sydney people are the most fickle, bandwagon, sing when you are winning supporters in Australia, make no mistake about it.

No,no,no… For the last time you don’t get it. It’s not a matter of win or lose. It’s much worse than that. China has seen the fork. Sydney has seen AFL. Enough said.

By similar “logic”, association football is stuffed in Italy because some teams cant get crowds.
GWS averaged crowds of 11 238 in 2012.
In 2011-12, Lecce of Serie A averaged home crowds of … 10 362.
On the other hand, Sydney’s lowest average home crowd in the last 15 years has been 24 981.
Crowd-wise, that never puts them worse than eighth in Serie A for average crowds
By your logic, Italians must “really” support some other sport, as they dont seem to want to turn up to soccer games.

Ian, 95 000 people live in Lecce. So more than one in 10 shows up to matches every week. That makes their football team a pretty significant cultural cornerstone of their everyday life. I won’t do the comparison with GWS, you can work it out.
The Swans get very good crowds for Sydney standards but that’s because they are such a loyal bunch and always turn up which means there’s not a lot of folk left at home watching on TV , hence the low ratings in Sydney.
I believe you live in Sydney so I would suggest to you start having more of a look around and maybe doing your only personal survey on the street in all four corners of the city and see where AFL rates in the importance stakes with the general public.

You can argue all you like about crowds, but the fact is that even if this club needs to be propped up fro a long time, the AFL charter means fostering the growth of the game, so its a moot point, quite frankly your hopes for its failure dont change things.
Its the football community’s money, and the bulk of the footbalk community can see the upside of this club, instead of putting up player wages, this money is far better spent growing the game.
And FWIW this club will be OK, things in sport can change very quickly, short term pain, for long term gain.

Brewski I’m really not fussed about whether the club makes it or not. I just want to cut through some of the propaganda and wishful thinking we get to read on the roar by you lot.

If any of these things occur, then they can be considered a failure
They get far less to their games than other local teams e.g. Penrith
There are fewer people going to AFL as a whole in Sydney than before they entered
They have a significant impact on Swans crowds.
If none of these happened, then it’s not a disaster, although I can’t see crowds over 10k all that often for awhile

@Brewski. I’m not about to recite all the ramblings I get to read here on a regular basis about AFL getting a foothold in Western Sydney and the grand 150 year plan. Talk to The Cattery and Mr Whitchurch etc.
I’ve said what I said. If you disagree I’m willing to hear your counterargument. If you haven’t got one then let’s leave it at that.

Got to have a plan, and got to be positive, we will leave the no plan, no postivity, and the paranoia for other codes.
If GWS gets 7,000 people to a game, where they are expected to be beaten by 100 points, what will they get to a game where they are expected to be competetive and a good chance of winning at least home games. ……… they will take time to create a supporter base and the NSWAFL will take time to create a decent grass roots player base in GWS.
What is break even for Skoda to be viable ……. do you know ?.
But as sure as night becomes day …it will happen, thousands of people believe in the game and are enthusiastic abouts it growth.
I just wonder if ypou consider my above statements propaganda, i would be interested to know.

Sure Ian but that average is bumped up by their initial game against the Swans, without that they average 8170. What get’s me is AFL teams seem to lose money with crowds far higher than GWS, so it looks like they will be a money pit for decades. Next year will be a real test for their supporters.

@ Sean …. generally clubs spend what they make each year, very rarely do they save for a rainy day, and this fact is across every club in every code, very rarely do clubs make profit after profit after profit.
Actually there is probably many clubs that spend more than what they make, and this can go on for many many years.
Every year we generally see the same clubs across many codes on the bones of their arse, but they generally make do and go around the next year, its a fact of life.

Sean,
AFL teams generally dont lose serious money – usually, a loss is because of over-spending in the football department combined with lower than expected gate revenue.
You get the occasional exception, like Brisbane’s accounting loss related to building their leagues club, but the AFL as a body is pretty darn concerned about making sure clubs are well run and solvent, because they are the ones who need to go in and clean up the mess if they arent.
Im expecting crowds to be pretty darn closely associated with on-field success, so next year should see slightly better crowds, but Im not expecting the real improvement until 2014-15.

The AFL will continue to prop them up until they move to Canberra full time after another new stadium is built there with the bill going to the tax payers.

how come all the north tweets are about the game and giants tweets are about the live music, memberships and the stadium.

Antonio said | 6:18pm | Report comment
Is that a rhetorical question? Its the same at the Gold Coast Suns games the AFL puts on live music and all this other stuff to try and get locals to come but it doesn’t work. The only reason the Gold Coast have better crowds is because of the large amount of Victorian ex-pats that live in Queensland. Every game I’ve been to this season there was always more away fans than Gold Coast locals.

I went to the swans v suns and north v suns games this year. Two matches where there should have been at least twice as many suns fans (especially the north game). The opposite occurred with at least a two third majority of opposition supporters. Reviewed footage of the Carlton game from a week ago it look to me to be a sea of mostly navy blue. Maybe people came out last year to support anyone but Collingwood at the Gold Coast game as would be tradition in the AFL.
