The AFL’s worst-kept secret is set to be finally revealed on Tuesday morning when the Carlton Football Club announce Mick Malthouse as their coach for the next three seasons. Join us as we live blog the announcement from 10.00am AEST.
Speculation had been rife that Malthouse would be at the Blues in 2013, following Brett Ratten’s departure from Princes Park a fortnight ago, despite Malthouse’s half-committed denials.
He’ll arrive at the Blues as one of the most decorated coaches in the AFL, following two premierships at the West Coast Eagles in the mid-90s, and one at Collingwood in 2010.
After departing Collingwood at the end of the 2011 season, it was widely tipped that Malthouse would return to the coaching profession somewhere in 2013 after he had hinted on numerous occasions that he wasn’t yet ready for retirement.
It sets up a tasty subplot to next season, with Malthouse at the helm of Collingwood’s most hated rivals, something that is certain to stir up passion on both sides of the Collingwood-Carlton divide.
Malthouse has long been renowned for his relationship with the media and today’s announcement, which begins at 10.00am AEST, will be an intriguing one. We’ll have live updates from the beginning.

And so begins a story that is certain to be discussed, dissected, poked, prodded and turned over and done again the coming hours, days, and probably months.
Malthouse will be returning to the hot seat and at some point next year will come face to face with his former protege (and captain) Nathan Buckley, and don’t you doubt for one second he’ll be burning to show them just what they missed out on in letting him go.
Hope you enjoyed reading, stick around on The Roar for comprehensive coverage of the business end of the 2012 AFL season.

Mick Malthouse announced as Carlton coach from 2013-15.
So, to recap on what we’ve learnt this morning:
- After discussions beginning last Monday, Mick has thrashed out a three-year deal with Carlton, and had not even given the job a thought, given his extensive list of commitments.
- He is indignant on this point, despite what he perceives to be doubts from the media scrum.
- He denies having any role in the sacking of Ratten’s backroom staff, saying only that he wanted his own “structures” in place.
- The fire is well and truly there for coaching, and from what we could see in his 25 minutes of dealing with the press, the fire is absolutely well and truly there to resume is battle with the media.

And that looks like it will be it in terms of questions from the media, with the Media Manager happy to begin photo ops of Malthouse and Kernahan – or “Sticks” as Malthouse now apparently refers to him.
And that will be all from VISY Park, as Malthouse embarks on his fourth tenure as an AFL coach.
Any thoughts? Will Malthouse try and regenerate the Blues’ mid-range list toward an immediate tilt at the flag, or is this a knock-down-and-rebuild job?
Are the Blues coming? Do we know they’re coming?

Little crack there between Mark Robinson and Malthouse. Didn’t get the whole part from Robbo, but he was sternly rebuffed by Malthouse – “this isn’t a conversation between you and me.”
Crrrunch.

MM: Believes that the media are not believing that Malthouse first met with the Blues last Monday, and is trying his best to set this point right.

MM: “I don’t put a limit (on coaching)…once you start capping people, we’ll get to the eight and that’s it. If we take that cap off then there is no limits.”
Caps? Carlton? Don’t go there Mick.

MM: Wants the Blues to enjoy their footy, have a common goal, get on board and get the maximum out of themselves.
“I don’t want people standing behind me. I want people standing next to me, and we can all move forward together.”

Great coup for the blues, but will next year be about ‘Carlton’ or ‘Mick’ – as it was for Collingwood in their failed 2011 season?

One of the first questions is regarding the departure of a host of Brett Ratten’s support staff over the past week.
MM: “all I had a say in is the structure” which he indicates is “different” to Brett Ratten’s.
He’s ducking and weaving.

We’re breathlessly awaiting the confirmation of news that most AFL fans with a television or internet connection knew about a week ago: THE Elder Statesman of the AFL’s coaching fraternity will be making a glorious return to the land of coaching in 2013 to coach the Blues and serve it up to his former master Eddie McGuire. Oh, and try and bring an underperforming Blues list back into the top eight also.
