Beale suffers new harsh Wallabies cut

Crowned the Wallabies’ best player a year ago, Kurtley Beale’s dramatic form slump has seen him dropped for a second time in a month.
The reigning John Eales Medallist, Beale is now a mere fringe player for Australia after Berrick Barnes, with no representative No.15 experience, was shifted to fullback for Saturday night’s Rugby Championship clash with Argentina on the Gold Coast.
Barnes’ red-hot goalkicking boot and hard-running centre Pat McCabe’s recovery from a foot injury combined to convince coach Robbie Deans to dump Beale to the bench.
It’s the second time in three Tests the 23-year-old will be a reserve after being dropped following his tournament-opening shocker against New Zealand in Sydney.
Deans admitted it was a tough decision, and Beale’s exciting attacking game would be best suited to the end of the Skilled Park encounter, but it still highlights how far he’s fallen.
The underdone Melbourne Rebels star could be forgiven for his disappointing display in the first Bledisloe loss following six weeks on the sidelines, but he’s failed to redeem himself sufficiently in his two hours of play in the past two Tests.
Wallabies playmaker Quade Cooper jumped to Beale’s defence on Tuesday, claiming his good friend had been harshly judged by critics.
“I don’t think he hasn’t been playing well,” Cooper said. “It’s just the way the games have panned out haven’t been the best for any of the back three.
“They haven’t had much opportunity and it’s been difficult for them and Kurtley is a player that has a lot of expectation.
“If he goes out there and has a normal game it’s perceived not to be his best game because he’s not doing the spectacular things he’s renowned for.”
McCabe has been a Deans’ favourite since he made his Test debut at inside centre last year and returns to the international arena following just 33 minutes of club rugby in the Canberra grand final on the weekend.
His recovery had also left Barnes vulnerable, especially as he was the main culprit for a series of ill-advised grubber kicks within Australia’s half in the 26-19 win over South Africa in Perth.
A five-eighth or playmaking No.12, Barnes has only played fullback for Sydney University in his return from concussion problems last year.
But Deans indicated his remarkable 25 from 29 success rate as Wallabies goalkicker this year, including six from six against the Springboks, was a key factor in his retention ahead of Beale.
“Berrick’s been kicking very well so he’s been an important part of our game turning over the scoreboard and Kurtley will be a great bloke to have entering the game late against tiring bodies,” he said.
Halfback Nick Phipps and lock Kane Douglas are the other starting changes due to injuries to Will Genia and Sitaleki Timani while hooker Stephen Moore was ruled out after failing to recover from a hamstring strain.
Genia’s imminent knee reconstruction will see Nathan Sharpe, the only current Wallaby to have played the Pumas before way back in 2003, captain Australia for the third time – and first in seven years.

If Beale was deemed only half fit – how about Robinson? Surely he could do with a some fitness work while Slipper takes to the front?

Drop Beale (good move) but move Barnes to fullback…now that’s clever…NOT. What about Morahan? I know he’s training with the 7s. Even AAC? Deans really is just re-arranging the deck chairs. McCabe has had 33 mins of club football. Tapuai has had numerous games and played very well. Oh that’s right. He plays for Queensland, played schoolboy rugby on the Gold Coast and would no doubt have a large following here. But lets not allow any semblance of smart thinking get in the way of a totally wayward plan. I really don’t think Deans has much concept of ‘horses for courses’. His analysis concerning selections has been found wanting on numerous occasions.

I would have likes to see Barnes at 10, teste and true and Cooper at 15, yes it hasnt been tried but where did Beale start before becoming a 15, similar guys similar arttacking abilities, lose nothing and retain Mccabe and AACin 12 and 13

I would like Barnes to be as far away from 10 as possible personally.
Also, would you really want QC in the custodian role, taking high balls, resonsoble for cover defence and not distributing regularly?
I know he is played at 15 in defence for the Reds, and provides a good counter attacking threat, I don’t think he would be suited to that role in test rugby (or if he’s suited to any role in test rugby for that matter!)
Although, as you say, I guess you’ll never know until it’s been tried.

Lunacy to have Beale, clearly unfit in mind and body, anywhere near squad.
Lunacy to select, yet again, a player out of position.
Deans has lost the plot.
BTW Quade should not be making any comment on the selection of a team mate.

Agree with you sittingbison. QC how about you concentrate on your own game mate and get your kicking game up to scratch instead of jumping to the defence of your mate. What value is Beale going to add off the bench, he is clearly unfit and out of form. Drop him from the squad so he can get fit and get off the p!ss would be a good start. I’m actually not surprised Barnes is picked at Fullback as we need him for his goalkicking yet can’t play him at 12. Why isn’t Taps on the bench ?

SB & WB – I would think that QC was at a media session and he defended a team mate. Lets not make mountains out of molehills….

J2, I don’t care where he was. It is not up to him to question selections. Unbelievable.
Good grief, defend a team mate? How about concentrating on himself, and his own failings. Let Deans comment on selections. Beale can talk about himself, and maybe explain that his form and fitness do not warrant selection, and how he must knuckle down, do the hard yatds, to get back in the frsme. You know, acknowledge what everyone else can see. Apart from Quade that is.
FFS, what idiot comment was that, when Beale plays less than stellar, but just normal he gets criticized? What garbage, shows how out of touch with reality the hole set up is. The guy has been a complete liability since Wales 3, not performing at S15 level, on fact not even club level. Missed tackles, dropped marks, stuffed kicks ie basic rugby skills.

He wasn’t questioning his selection on the bench, he was questioning the judgement of critics , presumably like yourself and World’s biggest, who called him a Junkie, for heaven’s sake
I like him defending his mate
What have you blokes been drinking?
You don’t have to get bitter and twisted

I didn’t call him a junkie so don’t label me in that bracket.
I labelled him as being unfit in mind and body, and I am certainly not alone in that determination. If you think he is playing wonderful rugby, great, thats your choice. The selectors have now dropped him to the bench two games in a row, so although they have demonstrated complete ineptitude lately even they think he is not performing.
I stand by my comments re:Quade. He does NOT have to answer questions, certainly about another player who has just been dropped, and in doing so demonstrate a complete lack of understanding.
molehill/molehill. My comment on Cooper was “BTW”, an aside. Get a grip yourselves.

Good question WB, why isn’t Taps in the side!!!! He brings more to the table overall than McCabe, except perhaps size. But he makes up for that in ball distribution, defence, line running and support play.
Regarding selections, Deans used to be indecisive…but now he’s not so sure…

McCabe would’ve been very good against the South Africans, where you win it or loose it based on getting up out of the defensive line fast and shutting them down. Having their forwards coming back behind the advantage line all day long is the key. Despite our lack of creativity our defensive effort and making them force the issue in attack was key to last saturday night.
Taps would’ve been the best option against the Argies who are rushing up in defense. We need a centre with footwork who can beat his man one on one. Taps would’ve put doubt in their minds and slowed down the rush defense.
I don’t mind McCabe, but the consistency and logic behind selections is appalling, again.

Not smart

Consistency…give me a break! The only consistency in Deans is his inability to select. Horses for courses should see Tapuai in the mix playing with guys he’s been around for most of his career in a place that’s basically home to him.
He’s also had considerably more game time than McCabe. What was Deans’ comments re the non selection of QC in the first hit out against NZ?
Come on Bennalong, you need to do better than that

Justin 2, so it’s OK for QC to snub the media upon his return presser at Leichardt Oval before Bledisloe 1 yet fine to comment on a team mate that is so far off the pace it’s ridiculous. QC needs to focus on his own game.
Re selection, everyone wants to see Taps get a run at least off the bench. However Dingo true to form selects Faianga on the bench, it beggers belief !

exactly Justin, Cooper should never have been near a news conference immediately after Beale is dropped. What would you expect the journos to ask? And what would you expect him to answer? Its idiocy.
In fact, until Quade himself has rediscovered his form and fitness, he should not be involved in media at all.

For non-Wallaby supporters this is good news, bad news for the Wallabies rugby. If Beale can regain his confidence he’s one of the best counter-attackers off a high ball I’ve seen.

For three weeks in the middle of the Super Rugby season Beale played about as good as you could expect a fly half to play against the Bulls , Crusaders and Force. That’s now where he should play and where his future with the Rebels definitely is.
Just took him going back into the Wallaby system to go off the rails and lose fitness and confidence.
Get back to Melbourne Kurtley where you are appreciated , get back to full fitness in mind and body and play the way we know you can at 10

Get a bigger midfield. Put Nick Cummins 98kgs of power and pace in at inside centre to crunch his way through. Put Adam Ashley-Cooper in at centre and Beale should go back to 1st five.Barnes in the reserves at best
