New Australian team Orica-GreenEDGE has collected bronze in the team time trial at the world road cycling titles in the Netherlands.

Belgian team Omega Pharma-Quickstep won the event by completing the 53.2km course through the rolling hills of the Limburg region in one hour, three minutes and 17.17 seconds.

BMC finished three seconds behind with GreenEDGE, led by Australian time trial specialists Luke Durbridge and Cameron Meyer, 47 seconds off the pace.

“The boys were happy to earn a medal, but we came here to win,” said GreenEDGE team director Matt White.

“We weren’t good enough to take the win on the day.

“We gave it everything and executed our plan well, but two teams went faster.”

Orica-GreenEDGE crossed the line with four of the six riders that started, the fourth rider determining the team’s time.

In the women’s event, Orica-AIS picked up silver behind German team Specialized-Lululemon.

The Judith Arndt-led Australian team finished 24 seconds behind the winners over the 34.2km route.

“The girls turned themselves inside out riding at the speed required to win, and we were still beaten,” said team director Martin Barras.

“We were initially and remain a bit deflated but are also very proud of the effort we left on the road.

“Silver is a mixed bag. We knew what we wanted and what we had to do to get it.”
