The combination of Roger Davis and Michael Cheika has swept through the stagnant and negative NSW Waratahs organisation like a breath of fresh air.
Davis (60), BEc (Hons) M Philosophy, is a former Wallaby and Rhodes Scholar, whose leadership qualities are in such demand that he’s on 11 boards across 10 industries.
He was appointed chairman of the Waratahs last month.
Cheika (45), a dyed-in-the-wool Randwick man is coming from the home of running rugby, where he played over 300 games and won seven premierships as a no nonsense No 8. He coached premierships in 2003 and 2004, before nine years overseas coaching experience in Ireland with Leinster and in France with Stade Francais.
He was appointed Waratahs coach yesterday for the next three years.
Now the Moore Park based Super Rugby franchise is cooking with gas and not candles. In just one day, the roster will feel as though a huge weight has been taken off their shoulders and they can settle down to do what they do best – play rugby the way it should be played.
Cheika will see to that.
No more aimless and constant kicking like previous Waratahs and current Wallabies, but Randwick rugby. The famous ‘Galloping Greens’ in their prime were at their most dangerous best just outside their own tryline.
Length of the field tries were common-place with deft passing, superb support, and a deep desire to turn defence into seven points.
Let me be the first to tell lost and lamenting Waratahs fans they are going to be treated to champagne rugby, and there will be 14 other Super Rugby franchises that won’t know what hit them.
These are not empty promises. They will be fact because Cheika is a hard-nosed critter who has a real flair for rugby, it’s in his blood.
But he’s essentially a team man, and the Waratahs will warm to his coaching.
“It’s the balance between cutting edge, technology, and science with a bit of old school, gut feeling, good culture, good atmosphere around the place, and a bit of dog as well,” was how Cheika described his task.
Talk is cheap, but Cheika pretty well covered all bases, and he’s a man of his word. Anything he’s missed isn’t worth caring about.
Now there’s a genuine reason why NSW supporters should again care for their team and vote with their feet once the Super Rugby tournament kicks off.
They will get excellent value for their hard-earned and a lot of entertainment while Roger Davis and Michael Cheika are calling the shots.
The Waratahs are alive again.

Win as many games as you want, just never against the reds.

David, it seem like you are giving him a screaming endorsement. Hope you are right.
What is the low down on his sacking from Stade Francais?

Hopefully it’s the same reason as why Ewen McKenzie got sacked from there. He certainly made up for lost time when he came home.

The lowdown is that he lost the clear majority of his games and therefore was removed.

Back to back seasons missing the finals, tensions with some senior players and coaching staff. Pretty much the same as McKenzie. Hope he is as successful as him during his first season with the reds!

Well let’s wait and see if there is a new coach for the backs. I have no confidence until a change happens there.
The Tahs back line has repeated the same failed tactics for a couple of years. (Yes that old definition of stupidity).
Their ball skill set seem neglected and re-alignment in defense is atrocious.
They have no dynamic creativity once play moves on from say 3rd phase.
There is a lot of work required.
Continue the clean-out.

Quite right. Backs coach Alan Gaffney is an old Randwick man, but by Lordy’s measure that should mean a ringing endorsement.

Gaffney has based is used by date as a backs coach. Ireland’s backs struggled under his coaching before he left to go back to Australia

Doesn’t matter how good the backs coach is if the head coach tells the 5/8 to kick it every time.

I’m a reds fan but I hope you are right David. There have been a number coaches praised as the savior for teams over the last 10 years and most have not lived up to the hype. The challenge for Cheika will be the height the bar is being set at.

Even as a Reds supporter I hope you are right David. There have been many coaches appointed over the last 10 years with confident predictions the would destroy every other team. Only a handful have come close to expectation. The bigger challenges for Cheika will be the height the bar is being set at, and changing the political culture of the Waratahs.

A request to current, ex and future Waratahs supporters:
The last few years have been a disappointing time for the Tahs and justifiably we have been demanding change. Finally that appears to have happened. There have been changes at the board level, coaching level and to a lesser extent at the player level. It remains to be seen if this will have the desired effect and we move in a positive direction but time will tell.
Cheika said at yesterday’s press conference that he wants to turn the Tahs home ground into a fortress with walls of supporters lifting the players. He said this can be achieved by playing good enjoyable rugby. The right noises are being made but I’m not trying to think too far ahead and I’m watching how everything unfolds.
It appears the Tahs are doing the right thing. It’s up to us, the fans to do the same and show our support. You may not be able to attend games or you may prefer watching on TV but you can still help by buying a supporters pack. (Although it may sound like it I don’t work for Tahs!)
Eight of my mates signed up for supporter’s packs ($40) the rest of us signed up for the GA season pass. We’ll get a hat and a car sticker (exciting I know) but we will use them to help promote the Tahs this season. I ask you to do the same. Let’s support the team to ensure these changes at the Tahs can be maximised. Let’s watch how the season unfolds without over-hyped expectation, but let’s show them the support that all teams who become successful need. We’re a part of the Waratahs as much as the administrators and players are. We need to be actively involved.

Have any of the Tahs playing group endorsed this appointment? The players requested in put into the process. Did this happen? Or was it all old boy suits making the decision? I’m not on twitter but was there much enthusiasm for the coach coming from the players?
