Michael Ballack signs with A-League’s Western Sydney Wanderers
By Myles Stedman, 20 Sep 2012 Myles Stedman is a Roar Guru
Exclusive sources have today confirmed for me that German football star Michael Ballack is arriving in Sydney tomorrow to confirm a two-year deal with the newest A-League franchise, the Western Sydney Wanderers.
Many sites, such as the Sydney Morning Herald have reported that the Wanderers rejected the latest offer for Michael Ballack’s, services put forward by his management. They apparently were unconvinced by his commitment and conditioning.
But this is in fact untrue, and The Roar‘s Myles Stedman can confirm that Ballack has agreed to a contract and will meet with Western Sydney Wanderers management within the next day to officially sign.
Ballack takes to three the number of ex-English Premier League and European players to sign with A-League clubs this off-season, the others being Alessandro Del Piero with Sydney FC and Emile Heskey with the Newcastle Jets.
Michael Ballack has had a checkered career, representing Germany 98 times, scoring 42 goals. The former German captain has also represented five other clubs including Bayern Munich and Chelsea. The Wanderers will become his sixth.
Ballack’s stop at Paramatta may well prove to be his swansong, as the 35 year old midfielder is nearing the end of his career. He will however, no doubt boost the profile of the A-League within Australia, and among world football.

Point taken. I’m sure when I first read it ‘European Players’ was not there. Though it is getting toward the end of the week…

I don’t remember it either, Tim.
I hope the Roar staff have some genuine reason to trust Myles and his sources. This appears pretty prominently if you google ‘Michael Ballack Wanderers’. Wouldn’t want The Roar to get a reputation as an outlet for the crazy unsupported declarations of some high school student.
Props to both Myles and The Roar if turns out to be true. Will wait and see.

Even if this doesn’t come off, it just goes to show how far the A-League has come in terms of player perception (thanks largely to Del Piero no doubt). Ballack wouldn’t have even been talking to the A-League last year, hell even Cahill didn’t want to play in Australia! Good job A-League.

Ballack would look pretty good in one of those old Bears shirts.LOL.
Congrats and good luck to WSW if they can pull of this coup
I like the fact that The Roar chieftans backed up Myles, one of our newer contributors, even if there is an ‘insurance’ paragraph at the end.
The guys at SBS certainly thing The Roar has backled a winner. They are running a story that suggests the German ace is working hard on his fitness before heading Down Under.

Haha completely agree about the colours Tim. As shallow as it is, the strip is one of the main reasons I’m switching my allegiance to WSW this year

Roarers – We did discuss with Myles the nature of his source. We felt that, on balance, it had enough merit to run. But by its nature this is unconfirmed so we felt it right to put this disclaimer.
