Week two of the NFL season is in the books, and before you even have the chance to complain about replacement refs another week of games is set thanks to the season long occurrence of Thursday Night Football.
Could this perhaps be a strategic ploy by the NFL to distract us from the embarrassing performance of the replacement refs? I’m not sayin’ but I’m just saying’…
However, before we are swallowed by yet another tantalising and often confusing week of games it’s important to look back at the true winners from around the league in week two.
Kevin Kolb outplayed Tom Brady
The same Kevin Kolb that was beaten out for the Cardinals starting quarterback job by John Skelton, who played his college ball at football powerhouse Fordham (it’s frustrating how difficult sarcasm is to depict in written format sometimes).
Much to the surprise of anyone who paid attention to the pre-season, Kevin Kolb has led his Arizona Cardinals to a 2-0 start to a season that was predicted with a healthy dose of doom and a resounding sense of gloom.
Another surprise that is more reminiscent of The Twilight Zone than the NFL?
If Arizona can find a way to upset Phildadelphia (Kolb’s former team, but you already knew that) this upcoming week, Kevin Kolb could very well be the starting quarterback of a 7-0 team.
After the Eagles in week three, the Cardinals face Miami, St Louis, Buffalo and Minnesota all of which are winnable games by anyone’s standards.
Kolb’s job was under constant scrutiny and he reacted by going into Tom Brady’s home and rubbing his dirty cleats all over Brady’s living room floor. That is the mark of a winner in my book.
Reggie Bush
After a college national championship, Heisman trophy, number two overall pick in the draft, Superbowl championship with New Orleans and the greatest achievement of all, a number of flings with Kim Karshashian, Reggie Bush, you have arrived.
Never short of critics, Reggie Bush has received shots from every direction whether it be due to his fragility, lack of aggression, failure to live up to the hype and questionable decision making. Even after his first 1000 yard season last year he was lambasted for claiming his goal is to be the NFL’s rushing leader this year.
I don’t hear too many critics right now.
After a solid 103 all purpose yards game against the vaunted Texans defence, Bush exploded on the 2012 scene in week two with 172 yards and two touchdowns along with another 25 yards receiving against the Raiders.
Bush is finally hitting the open gaps with power as well as speed and taking the three yard gains while still making the big plays we have all come to expect of him.
So Reggie Bush, for finally receiving recognition as a true No. 1 running back, you get my personal thumbs up (you can’t see me but I just did it, so you’ll just have to believe me).
Struggling week one rookie quarterbacks
Congratulations are in order to Russell Wilson, Ryan Tannehill and Andrew Luck whom all recorded their first career NFL victories.
All of which came one week after Robert Griffin III seemingly made every one of them obsolete.
Russell Wilson had the biggest scalp of the three with a stingy performance that helped his Seahawks record an upset win over everyone’s (post Giants victory) Superbowl favourite, the Dallas Cowboys.
Andrew Luck looked every bit the quarterback we expected yet forgot about after he was unlucky enough to face the Bears defence in week one.
Ryan Tannehill rebounded from a poor performance against the Texans in week one by displaying some impressive arm strength as well as scampering in for a touchdown against the Raiders.
Also important to note that 28-year-old Cleveland ‘rookie’ quarterback Brandon Weeden played substantially better in week two, almost helping the Browns defeat the Bengals.
What’s most encouraging is that each rookie quarterback so far has shown glimpses of franchise player potential, which is more than can be said of last year’s class, excluding Newton and Dalton.
So to this year’s rookie quarterbacks, you may not win many games this year, but for one week at least you do win something equally special…my approval*.
