A place in the 2012 AFL Grand Final is on the line as Hawthorn host Adelaide. We’ll have live scores and updates from 5.15pm AEST.
The Hawks are by far the more favoured side going into this game, and rightly so.
Not only do they play like a side on the verge of going all the way, the minor premiers have won 13 of their last 14 games, with the sole loss coming in an after-the-siren thriller.
They’ve also won ten straight games against interstate sides at the MCG, whereas the Crows have lost their last five interstate finals.
In addition, the week off has already provided benefit for the Hawks with Jordan Lewis and Clinton Young both returning without being rushed, while the Crows last week had to do things the hard way after giving up an early lead to Fremantle.
But there is a recipe to beating Hawthorn, and Adelaide are a side that does have at least some of the ingredients.
To beat the Hawks, you must stretch the defence, be well prepared for your own defence to be stretched and have the ability to control possession for long periods.
Taylor Walker’s form, after five goals in the semi final, would suggest that the Hawks defenders do indeed have something to worry about. Kurt Tippett, while criticised over his form recently, is a serious marking threat who had 3.3 the last time these two teams met.
So we can expect the first box to be ticked. The next two is where it remains to be seen.
Injuries in consecutive finals to defenders Daniel Talia and Sam Shaw could not have come at a worse time, meaning containing all of Buddy Franklin, Jarryd Roughead, David Hale and Jack Gunston will prove problematic.
As for controlling possession, the key stat from the last game between the Crows and Hawks in Round 3 was Hawthorn out-marking their opponents 140-52. A repeat of that and it’s game over. The Crows did have 66 more uncontested possessions than the Dockers last week, however.
The players Hawthorn will need to control, other than Walker that is, will be the gun midfielders: Patrick Dangerfield, Scott Thompson, Bernie Vince and Rory Sloane. Dangerfield was effectively tagged by Ryan Crowley last week, so Liam Shiels could find himself in a similar role this week.
Overall, you get the sense Adelaide just have too much to overcome for a young side on the rise. The finals-hardened Hawthorn will have to go close to self-destructing to not earn a spot in the Grand Final.
But this is finals football, and you never know what could happen. Preliminary finals have certainly delivered upsets before.

I think hawks are big cheaters not tigers and there a terrible team it’s just the umpires are on there side so they have that advantage also I hope they have read this because they should learn from there mistakes.

Adelaide were robbed, hope the Hawks get smashed next week, Rioli is over rated, and so is Buddys kicking.
Dangerfield deserved a free kick, if that was Rioli, it would have been.
I dont like Hawthorn …can you tell !.

Great stuff, a bit of diving in AFL I see tonight, was that a sea breeze that blew him over?
Adelaide lost it when Rutten dropped that easy mark and Buddy scored. Bit like O’Brien’s mistake last night, that is what turns games.
Rioli was a one man team how can you call him overated? Buddy was a disappointing and needs to lift his game. Nearly cost hawthorn the game.
The Crows blew their best chance ever over a half hearted Hawthorn. But hey no one remembers who came third or fourth, no matter how well you lose.

I hoped Adelaide would win, but really, if Hawthorn had the accuracy of under 9′s they would have won comfortably. They were useless in front of goal, they dominated the game and almost lost.

THREE QUARTER TIME
Hawthorn 11.14 80 | Adelaide 9.4 58
Hawthorn reasserted themselves in that quarter, leaving Adelaide with a massive job to do if they are to make it to the Grand Final next week. The Hawks went hard and they went early. A flurry of quick goals early in the quarter showed they weren’t mucking around anymore. But, they gave up yet another late goal. So nothing is out of the question at this stage. Brad Sewell 25 touches at 84% efficiency (plus 7 clearances, five inside 50s, three rebound 50s). Scott Thompson the non-forward standout for Adelaide.

HALF TIME
Hawthorn 5.10 40 | Adelaide 7.3 45
This is smelling more and more like an upset as it progresses. Hawthorn have been dominating the stats since the first term, and on paper should be ahead, but the Crows are slowly lifting around the ground to add to their dominance inside 50. Taylor Walker and Kurt Tippett are simply destroying Josh Gibson and Ryan Schoenmakers. Tex’s goal on the half time siren was huge. The psychological boost of leading at half time should not be underestimated. Sam Mitchell has had 15 disposals, six tackles, four clearances and five inside 50s. But the Hawks’ forward line hasn’t been operating at its best, Buddy Franklin has been well held and 5.10 a sad reflection of where their kicking is at.

QUARTER TIME
Hawthorn 2.6 18 | Adelaide 4.1 25
Adelaide have come to play and have made the most of their opportunities. Realistically, Hawthorn should be in front. They had 11 more inside 50s for the quarter. But 2.6 is an unimpressive return for their midfield’s efforts. When the Crows have gone forward they’ve looked dangerous, with Taylor Walker doing his damage up the ground this week and Kurt Tippett dominating in the match-up with Ryan Schoenmakers.

If the game keeps being played the way it is, the Hawks will eventually get on top of the Crows for sure. Tippett will start getting extra attention and you doubt the Hawks will continue to be THAT inaccurate for the rest of the game. Hawks dominating the key stats, just isn’t translating to the scoreboard yet.
But, the Crows will be looking at it as though they are in front against the minor premiers despite not playing their best footy, so maybe they’ll be the team to turn things around. Then the Hawks should be worried.
