A place in the 2012 AFL Grand Final is on the line as Hawthorn host Adelaide. We’ll have live scores and updates from 5.15pm AEST.

The Hawks are by far the more favoured side going into this game, and rightly so.

Not only do they play like a side on the verge of going all the way, the minor premiers have won 13 of their last 14 games, with the sole loss coming in an after-the-siren thriller.

They’ve also won ten straight games against interstate sides at the MCG, whereas the Crows have lost their last five interstate finals.

In addition, the week off has already provided benefit for the Hawks with Jordan Lewis and Clinton Young both returning without being rushed, while the Crows last week had to do things the hard way after giving up an early lead to Fremantle.

But there is a recipe to beating Hawthorn, and Adelaide are a side that does have at least some of the ingredients.

To beat the Hawks, you must stretch the defence, be well prepared for your own defence to be stretched and have the ability to control possession for long periods.

Taylor Walker’s form, after five goals in the semi final, would suggest that the Hawks defenders do indeed have something to worry about. Kurt Tippett, while criticised over his form recently, is a serious marking threat who had 3.3 the last time these two teams met.

So we can expect the first box to be ticked. The next two is where it remains to be seen.

Injuries in consecutive finals to defenders Daniel Talia and Sam Shaw could not have come at a worse time, meaning containing all of Buddy Franklin, Jarryd Roughead, David Hale and Jack Gunston will prove problematic.

As for controlling possession, the key stat from the last game between the Crows and Hawks in Round 3 was Hawthorn out-marking their opponents 140-52. A repeat of that and it’s game over. The Crows did have 66 more uncontested possessions than the Dockers last week, however.

The players Hawthorn will need to control, other than Walker that is, will be the gun midfielders: Patrick Dangerfield, Scott Thompson, Bernie Vince and Rory Sloane. Dangerfield was effectively tagged by Ryan Crowley last week, so Liam Shiels could find himself in a similar role this week.

Overall, you get the sense Adelaide just have too much to overcome for a young side on the rise. The finals-hardened Hawthorn will have to go close to self-destructing to not earn a spot in the Grand Final.

But this is finals football, and you never know what could happen. Preliminary finals have certainly delivered upsets before.
