Tonight the AFL shifts its focus from the playing field to the red carpet for the presentation of the competition’s highest individual accolade, the Brownlow Medal. Join us from 5:15pm AEST as we follow all the action from Melbourne’s Crown Palladium.
In what promises to be one of the most open counts in years, it’s almost impossible to accurately predict which contender is most likely to walk away with the game’s most coveted prize.
Can Gary Ablett recapture the heights of 2009 and find himself on the podium for a second time?
Will Jobe Watson or Trent Cotchin be able to emulate Shane Crawford in 1999 and win the award while playing in a team who didn’t make finals?
Could the Adelaide duo of Scott Thompson and Patrick Dangerfield steal the show and take the medal back to South Australia?
Or will premiership favourites Hawthorn have their first winner since 1987 in late mover Sam Mitchell?
You can essentially throw a blanket over the entire field and it wouldn’t be a shock to find ourselves in similar territory to 2003, when Mark Ricciuto, Nathan Buckley and Adam Goodes all shared the spoils with equal votes.
The open field has been reflected by punters in the betting markets with Ablett a narrow favourite over Watson and Cotchin. Thompson, Dangerfield and Mitchell then follow, with Sydney’s contested king Josh Kennedy and Collingwood triple midfield threat of Dane Swan, Dayne Beams and Scott Pendlebury the most likely outsiders.
As is the case every year, there’s sure to be plenty of discussion generated regarding the umpires’ interpretation of player performance.
Who will be short-changed, who will be this year’s umpire’s pet, and which names will Andrew Demetriou incorrectly pronounce?
“I Omith, one vote…”
All this before we even get to one of the most important elements of Brownlow Medal night, the WAGs.
God bless those WAGs.

Watson isn’t expected to poll another vote.
The only man who can catch him, Ablett, is expected to poll in the next two games.
You’d think Watson has it in the bag from here.

In a shock to nobody Dane Swan is absolutely waxed. Surely he’s broken through the double figure Crowny threshold?
Meanwhile Jobe Watson looks like he just walked off the MCG, a picture of nerves and sweat.

Is this new?
Finally, common sense prevails and the “Fashion Police” segment is brought to an end.
I don’t know how I managed to survive such an ordeal. Let us never speak of such horrors ever again.

We’d be lost without Brynne’s valuable input.
She’s such a Saint.

What I’ve learnt tonight: “Trent of the tit” is a thing, apparently.
I haven’t learnt anything else.

For someone who has zero fashion sense, sitting through this has been quite soul destroying. I can feel my brain melting.
Turns out I am strangely addicted to train-wrecks.

This “Fashion Police” segment is a cringe-worthy buffet, fully accompanied by police siren sound effects.
The irony scale has just exploded with well publicized bully “victim” Charlotte Dawson hosting a TV segment which rips apart people’s fashion sense.

Red Carpet Votes;
3 Votes – M. Murphy: He’s done quite well for himself.
2 Votes – The sexual tension between Brad Sewell and Jesinta Campbell during their Red Carpet interview.
1 Vote – N. Naitanui: For forcing me to Google “Who is Naitanui dating?”. I have no shame.
-350 votes, G. Ablett: The dumping of Lauren Phillips pre-Brownlow was unnecessary and offensive towards my vision.

In non-Brownlow related footy news Hawthorn’s Brent Guerra has ruled himself out of Saturday’s Grand Final.

Good on him. Ending the speculation early so it doesn’t distract the team. No one doubts his courage in training the house down to get fit in time. Hawks supporters know how good of a player he is and how important he has been in getting the team this far. Really great move from him to rule himself out this early.

Agree 100%. Shows great character on Guerra’s behalf and will only help the team by eliminating the sideshow that comes with all the speculation.

I wish this were true but it doesn’t appear to be the case.
Guerra has released an official club statement saying he couldn’t perform at the required level with 100% confidence, therefore has withdrawn himself from possible selection.

I’d attempt to explain Brynne Edelsten’s Red Carpet interview but the English language lacks the words required to describe what my eyes just witnessed.
Regardless, the panel gave her efforts a 10/10.
I can confirm that I don’t understand fashion and I am ok with this.

The over/under for number of interviews before Alex Perry makes a Wag cry is set at 11.
I’m convinced he goes under. I’m hoping he goes under. This coverage needs a curve-ball.

Time to fax the mortgage papers through to the bookies.

Fox Footy’s red carpet coverage is underway.
It’s time to get the claws out and make a note of those pointy elbows.
Apply your judgmental caps, people.

There is some VERY reliable late mail just coming in (and created by me) for Teddy Richards. He’s at $2500, $700 for the place. It will be the first Brownlow to a defender in a very long time if he wins, in fact first time full stop maybe.

As doubtful as it is I don’t think there’s a single footy lover on the planet who wouldn’t want to see this happen.
The Teddy Richards love knows no bounds.
