Swans must get better

Sydney coach John Longmire warns his side must improve on a last-start victory over Collingwood if they hope to be competitive against Hawthorn in Saturday’s AFL grand final.
The Swans impressed plenty in their preliminary final against the Magpies, winning by 26 points despite kicking an inaccurate 13.18.
It was in stark contrast to the Hawks’ five-point triumph over Adelaide last Saturday, in which the overwhelming favourites were made to sweat.
But Longmire said on Monday the onus was on the Swans to do all the improving, otherwise the premiership decider would be a one-sided affair.
“We’ll have our review today, we’ll look at things we did well,” Longmire said.
“But also the things we can get better at, and there were some.
“We have to get better at some things if we’re going to be competitive this week, and we’ll address that and move onto the Hawks straight away.”
The Swans have one victory from their past 15 clashes at the MCG, but Longmire dismissed the hoodoo.
The second-year coach was more worried about recent memories of Hawthorn’s come-from-behind win in round 22 at the SCG, in which the Swans held a 38-point lead in the second quarter.
“You’ve got to do a lot of things right (to beat Hawthorn),” he said.
“You’ve got to make sure your pressure is absolutely elite, and elite for four quarters.
“You’ve got to take your chances when you get them.”
Along with better goal-kicking, one of Sydney’s keys to victory will be getting the most out of centre half-forward Sam Reid.
Reid has been held to a total of one goal and five marks in the Swans’ two finals this year.
Some pundits suggest the 20-year-old is down on confidence and form, but Longmire was quick to defend his efforts since missing the final game of the regular season with a glute strain.
“He’s dropped a few marks on the weekend … his pressure was pretty good. He’s an important player to our team,” Longmire said.
“If you have a look at the game (against Collingwood) again, he got a couple of great intercepts.
“His wingspan is enormous … when he can use his speed, get across the ground so quickly, it puts pressure on the opposition and doubt in the opposition when they’ve got the footy.”

Swans need to take a leaf from Crows and figure a way to keep Gibson away from being 3rd man up in contests, that gives your forwards more chance to mark and your crumbers more chance at roving (because Gibson hasn’t belted it 50 yards away…). For me this is key to Swans winning.

It would help if they kicked straight too. Really should have had Collingwood beaten by quarter time last weekend…

Agree with both of the above. The key is a fast start. All year the Swans have been good out of the blocks and won most of their first quarters. In some cases they have blown the game away by quarter time (Geelong, Western Bulldogs etc.) They are great frontrunners who can be run down, but then come back (Geelong, Hawthorn).
Clarkson will do everything to slow the Swans momentum at the start and prevent them frontrunning. If Hawthorn do that, and Gibson stays fit (he went off in the Launceston game earlier this year, and the Swans came back to win comfortably) then the Hawks should have too much firepower. Ironmonger’s comment is 100% correct – must make Gibson accountable if the Swans are to kick a winning score and prevent the Hawks rebounding.
Longmire has really coached well this year and it will be interesting to see in the final how he and Dew set up the Swans midfield. The Swans are probably better in and under and with handball, although Sewell and Mitchell are excellent, but the Hawks kicking skills ar sublime. Pressure from both midfields will be telling and don’t expect a tackle count like against Adelaide; it will be more like the Swans – Collingwood game.
Should be a ripper. I expect the Hawks to be too good, but if they fall away slightly the Swans will pounce and strangle them. Go the Bloods!

Sydney will win this match. They are a more even team.
I’d take the marking confidence of Richards, Mattner, Grundy over golden fisted Gibson any day.

Based on recent performances, Sam Reid should be carrying the oranges ! Not the hopes for the bag full of goals !
Currently he is a major weak link in the Swans forward line.
Fingers crossed he can lift and contribute.

Never fear Bones. Hawthorn defence will have there hands full, he’ll just as likely pick a couple of gimmes. Wouldn’t be recalling poor old McGlynn though who’s lack of match fitness would be too risky even if he has recovered.

Lets talk TV ratings again –
Apparently the Pay TV rating for the Swans v Collingwood game has been updated to 502,000 from 490,000.
The media guys say the Capital City FTA ratings this Saturday should go over 3 miilion again AKA 2005 and 2006 G.F.`s when the Swans played the Eagles.
In another first Queenslander Chelsea Roffey will be the first female umpire to officiate in an AFL GF. Chelsea came through the ranks of AFL QLD to achieve her girlhood dream of being in the GF and will wave the flags in one of the goals.
Another achievment for the successful AFL Nationwide development System.

Apparently the 502,000 was the 4th highest pay rating sports program ever.
Be interested to see what the other 3 were.

Some more info–
The 2005 FTA Capital City Audience was 3,386,000 -Swans v Eagles Grand Final.
The 2006 FTA Capital City Audience was 3,145,000 – Swans v Eagles Grand Final
Pay TV 2012 AFL Finals
Crows v Dockers = 394,000
Pies v Eagles = 422,000 – Was AFL Pay TV Record until Pies v Sydney match.
Hawks v Crows = 397,000
There is no doubt that the Magpies hold the AFL drawing power crown. Will be interesting to see if the Hawks can generate the same interest on Saturday from a Melbourne point of view.

Although Crows obviously did pretty well with their drawing power at the end (probably where those empty seats went).

I think if Chelsea could wear a mini skirt and high heels the TV ratings would go up a notch.
Video reviews would be the most popular aspect of the game

I was hoping Lou Reed was going to perform Metal Machine Music this year at the AFL Grand Final, alas not to be.
Question: If you have a standing room ticket, is it best to get there at the crack of dawn or OK maybe 2 hours before the bounce? Also, my ticket indicates that you have a standing room section rather than just being able to roam around freely, or do people abuse this?
Any info appreciated.
