Expect the NFL to be nominated for best comedy at next year’s Emmy Awards night. Just when we all thought this humorous situation couldn’t get any worse, it just did.
Enter Mitch Mortaza. The founder and president of the Lingerie Football League today released a statement that has further embarrassed the NFL.
“Because of the LFL’s perception, it is that much more critical for us to hire officiating crews that are competent, not only for the credibility of our game but to keep our athletes safer. Due to on-field incompetent officiating we chose to part ways with with a couple of crews which apparently are now officiating in the NFL.”
“We have a lot of respect for our officials but we felt the officiating was not in line with our expectations.
“We have not made public comment to date because we felt it was not our place to do so. However in light of tonight’s event, we felt it was only fair that NFL fans knew the truth as to who are officiating these games.”
Two words come to mind: oh my. This is America’s sport and for three weeks going on four, their beloved game has turned into a farce. The LFL is a women’s only league that pits seven against seven with players kitted in shoulder, elbow and knee pads, garters, bras, panties and an ice hockey inspired helmet.
Fair to say that Mr. Mortaza has a very high standard for when it comes to officiating. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
The ‘real’ referees have been locked out since June and fair to say, the replacements have be controversial.
Fans will continue to watch their teams play on Thursday, Sunday and Monday despite the horrendous officiating. Players won’t strike in an attempt to bring back the original men in stripes. Roger Goodell still has this in his favour.
The NFL and NFL Referees Association met following the contentious Green Bay Packers v Seattle Seahawks game (apparently not linked to the result) however a resolution failed to be struck.
Discussions are back on and that is a great sign but an agreement must be made fast. Both sides need to give up a little for the sake of this great game.

I find it completely ridiculous that Obama, Ryan, and other politicians are spending time worrying about officiating in a pro sports league. Guys, try worrying about the economy or something else that matters for once. Am I the only one bothered by that? Its just a GAME.

Bob, I agree with you that the pollies should stay out of it: it is just a game but it’s the A-league … they need the best refs on the ground. With the pollies, they’re thinking about when they leave office and a potential front office job ‘opens’ up.
Mort from ESPN this morning reported that they are closer to a deal – the real refs could be back on the park for tomorrows game.

No. This is America in miniature – a bunch of very, very rich owners, running a profitable enterprise, set out to break the union and cut pensions and health care so the enterprise becomes more profitable.
In doing so, they ruin the product.
Its just like Boeing, only smaller.

Hey, I hate the whole idea of the LFL, but the novelty doesn’t mean the contact’s not real – it just means they wear less protection. They’re serious athletes trying to make a living… no need to take a shot at them.

If they are looking for a few refs for the LFL I’m up for it
