Look to Channel Nine to fix the video refereeing fiasco

There’s a very simple and built-in way to overcome the on-going howlers made by rugby league video refs: appoint the Channel Nine commentary team to do the job.
There’s no way Ray Warren, Peter Sterling, Phil Gould, Wally Lewis, Brad Fittler, Darren Lockyer and Andrew Johns could possibly make a mistake with slow-mo replays.
That’s if Channel Nine execs don’t knock the idea as placing too much extra pressure on the team that might affect their capacity to call.
That would be an unrealistic response. The commentary team watch exactly the same footage as the current video refs, and make comment en route on air, so why not give them the full bottle?
If seven is too unwieldy, make it Gould and Lewis to make the decisions. They are the among the best analysts of the code.
And to appease the Queenslanders who accuse NSW of running the game, Lewis takes care of that problem with New South Welshman Gould.
Rugby league footballers, coaches, fans, fringe-dwellers, and the media, have all had a gutful of the obviously wrong decisions that continue to rise.
Take Sean Hampstead as a prime example. He’s been demoted three times this season for decision howlers as a video ref. How many times must he be flicked to no longer have the job?
There are alternatives to the commentary team.
Referee boss Bill Harrigan and his side-kick Stuart Raper should have the job on Sunday. Harrigan was the best ref in both rugby codes since he made his first grade debut in 1986. After 392 first grade games, 10 grand finals, 21 Origins, and 25 Tests nobody is better qualified.
Still not sure what qualifications Raper has to be a refereeing guru. After a limited career as a player, and 127 games coaching Castleford and a short time coaching the Sharks.
But he is Harrigan’s 2IC, and that’s a good enough reason why he should be there assisting on Sunday.
Another alternative is make the most of former players like Max Krilich, and Gary Jack, to name just two of many possibilities, to be video refs.
They have the football nous to make the job work.
And it’s not difficult, just plain common sense and use of technology. It’s a simple process.
One fact for certain, any alternative is better than the current one.
But I still stick to my Channel Nine suggestion, all wrapped up in one neat and tidy parcel.

Think im tempted to agree with you.
Although I do think the key to video replays is to show them in normal speed. Let the video ref view it a few times at normal speed and make a call. They wont get them all correct (they dont anyway) but at least most fans could live with that i would think. Same thing in cricket as well.
All this slowing down, trying to determine which guys hand is on the ball in this particular frame is just tedious. And no matter which way they call it, 50% of people watching will disagree. Just some rambling thoughts on it.

I could also see the idea working, but would be rather surprised if it ever happened.
However, I think that educated supporters of the game–even ones who have an interest in one of the two teams on the ground in any game–would still agree with what happened, not with getting their way.
I admit that I want calls that are really fifty/fifty to go my way for the team that I am supporting. But I don’t want the wrong decision to be made when it is obvious what happened.

AndyMack, let me take the ramble out of your thinking. Let Ray Warren and Peter Sterling concentrate on the call, and Brad Fittler, Darren Lockyer, and Andrew Johns on the interviews, leaving Phil Gould and Wally Lewis in a dual capacity as an integral part of the call, but more importantly they make video ref decisions. The best part would be for viewers to hear what Gould and Lewis are saying as they work their way to a decision. Viewer involvement hearing what two icons of the game are deliberating would be spectacular, instead of the unknown thinking of the current video refs.

Won’t work in Origin. Lewis and Gould will just end up brawling. I’ll back Lewis to win the brawl although Gus looks like a biter to me so he may take chunks out of King Wally Tyson style. Should make good television though.

Fair call Bee Bee, that’s where Bill Harrigan steps up to the video ref’s plate – ON HIS OWN.

Classic David i can just see Wally and Gould arguing the point with infamous no no no no no coming out of Gould’s mouth , your idea is better than anything they have come up with , which is exactly zero , good laugh ….

I like the suggestion, make it like the NFL (excluding the replacement debacle).
Have the on field refs review the call. It’s easy to mount TVs on the side line and behind the goals. That way the ref, who knows the reason why he sent it to the video can make the call. Backing his own judgement.

Agree withBeeBee wont work if the commentary team have a vested interest and we all no Sterlo and Gould are one eyed NSW supporters.
Wont happen the problem is the benifit of doubt rule which must be removed. Our game is the most referred game in the world 2 on field referees, 2 linesman and 2 video referees. The problem is the interprtation of the rules.the interferance rules must also be simplified and understood by all.GET THE RULES SORTED AND WE WONT HAVE ANOTHER SEASON OF BAD CALLS

This would be entertaining to watch, but if its accurate decisions you are after then its one of the stupidest ideas I’ve ever heard! I’m continually amazed at how the channel 9 commentators seem not to know the rules, or else insist on applying some truncated, paraphrased version of a particular rule that fits with how they ‘think’ the rule should apply on any given day. I guess one upside would be that these commentators would actually be forced to properly read the rule book.

I woud hope that the Channel commentators could adjudicate in a less one eyed mode than they do their own jobs, some of the commentaries are so Biased, I cry. lol

Benefit of the doubt is a special kind of nonsense. By way of referring the call to a video ref the on field ref has some kind of doubt therefore all referred decisions should come back benefit of the doubt. Its the only way the three latest howlers could have ended up trys. Forans hand of God the most spectacular example of the madness of benefit of the doubt.
I agree with you Dave on giving channel 9 control. Worse decision than bringing back Big Brother. Gould has his own idea of what the rules should be. One of his favourite pets is the strip. One minute he’s saying the player should have had better ball security the next he’s berating a ref for missing a blatant strip. Same incident, same day, Different Gus.

NIce one David, and why dont we just add some clowns and balloons, then we will have the complete circus act.
Mate it is hard enough having to listen to these clowns, who balls up most calls themselves.
You want to fix the problem, yes listen to Gus,
he is right with one thing, “why are we looking at this, we should not be looking at this,” ?
A obvious knock-on and has been sent to the video ref to look at 10 times to see if the player who had to make a tackle, knocked the ball out. ?????
Come-on, this amatuer game cant survive run like a backyard dogs breakfast. I will keep saying it until we decide to turn professional and fix this nonsense.
As for the channel 9 commentators, mate if they did this i would never watch nine again, and their debt would grow to 10 billion. Be careful nine, your treading a fine path.

Oikee is spot on yet again!. — surely it can’t be that hard for a guy that is trained to know the rules to take a second look at the incident (If needed) at NORMAL speed. — one look only at each angle, then make decision.
Forget the Clowns in the commentary box, Gus reads the rules how he thinks they should be .. Rabs is just too old to see most things..and the rest haven’t a clue that a rule book exists, yeah a brilliant idea to entertain the viewers.. ! — better viewing than ‘Farmer wants a ,,,,,,’ better not go there! it got me thrown off Channel Nines facebook page!…. lol

Oikee you know this … Channel Nine does not owe anything the company that owns channel nine owes a lot of money. No receiver if installed would put a business that has positive cash flow of 400-600 million on the scrap heap…. If the price is right Jamie is there just waiting ….

Thanks Dayer, you know that Sky let go of possibly the best caller in the world, Jason Costigan, he is a minister now here in Queensland. Thje game should do everything possible to get him back, calling in the NRL as our Main caller.
This guy is unbelievable, and he was confined to only calling Warriors games. Mate wasted in NZ, Australia never woke up to the fact this guy is world class.
The best i have ever heard, ever. And i know league calling, i have listened to the game for decades. Even the Pommie callers of the Super League should be chased, brought over to our game. They are excellent as well.

Surely you jest David? How many times during a call do we hear the Channel 9 commentary team disagree with one another. They get it wrong more often than not, and I’m constantly shocked by how few of them know the rules. Do you actually ever listen to them? And forget the fact they only televise 3 games per week. What about the other 5? Ask Fox to renegotiate the TV rights to have the 9 team call their games as well? Yep I can see you wrote this after a dozen schooners….

Godd point, and the calls are different when you watch the replay on pay. They have their own callers and the game is so different to how nine calls the match.
The Refs looking at replays on the sideline in a box is looking good to me. The 2 old muppets can then have a ball of figuring out which way they will call.
They love this, i dont mind the 2 of them, they keep you entertained, but dont let them anywhere near the running of the game, god help us. Everytime i see Gus hanging around the Chook gamemakers, i get a deep panic dread in my guts.

I think Ray Warren was right the other week when he said the benefit of the doubt be removed and they should pack a scrum 10m out giving the loose head and feed to the attacking team.

Yep, I’ve been saying this for a while. Joey/Freddy or Gus/Wally for 9 telecasts, Brandy/Woolford and so on for Fox.
9 can even sub-contract their talent out to get some extra dollars in the kitty.

The NFL seems to be having very similar issues, and they brought the idea into the arena in the first place. I’m actually amazed that there are 2 video refs, is it for symmetry’s sake we’re getting confusion here
Anyway don’t change the rules: get the ref to grow some balls and make the call themselves. That’s what most people want when it comes to penalties, maybe for consistency’s sake we’ll get rid of the confusion!
