Bok fans confident now backs have firepower
That giant sighing sound you might have heard sweeping across to Oz from the Republic was not the Roaring Forties.
It was a sound issuing from a relieved Heyneke Meyer in reaction to the Springboks team selections to face the Wallabies in Pretoria.
For the past week or so Bok fans have been morosely contemplating the same old static back line, but they cheered up immediately at the news that Johan Goosen will start in place of Morne Steyne, and that Jaco Taute will more than likely come in at 13 (if Frans Steyne is still hobbling).
It wasn’t all champagne, there was some flat beer too in the case of Zane Kirchner holding on to the 15 jersey. “Pat Lambie! Pat Lambie!” everybody was shouting, but Meyer wasn’t listening. He did, however, hear the cries about Elton Jantjies and has included him on the bench. Depending on how the Goose goes, Elton will probably see some second-half action.
Meyer has gone for the skyscraper Bekker in the second row, with the returning Etzebeth as his partner. The battle for air rights between this pair and Sharpe, Timani/Douglas should be memorable.
But it’s the two new 10s that has sparked the most discussion. Beale against the neophyte Goosen. One of them hoping to break his slump, the other with something to prove to the rugby world. And you can bet your bottom rand that the rugby world will be watching to see who’s best man.
