No Wallabies speak up for Cooper
Related coverage
Outspoken five-eighth Quade Cooper may feel he has support from his teammates but none in Australia’s camp in Pretoria is prepared to show it.
Ahead of their Rugby Championship Test against South Africa on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld, skipper Nathan Sharpe was again asked about his thoughts on Cooper’s ongoing criticism of the Australian set-up.
Cooper has complained of a “toxic environment” within the Wallabies, claiming he’s unlikely to play for the national team again unless his concerns are addressed by authorities.
He feels there are several problems within rugby, including a lack of appropriate facilities for the team to prepare and train for internationals.
“There’s no doubt there’s support amongst the boys and, like I said, there’s going to be people that are happy and some that are unhappy,” Cooper told Fox Sports’ The Rugby Club on Thursday night.
While coach Robbie Deans said Cooper was still welcome in the Wallabies, a visibly annoyed Sharpe only wanted to focus on the game.
“We’re concerned with the game on the weekend,” he said in Pretoria.
“Those things will play themselves out the way they’re supposed to.
“We’re over here to do a job and that’s to beat South Africa, representing Australia … we’re looking forward to that and all those things happening back home, we’ve got no influence over them.”
From the outside the players in Pretoria appear very tight, organising an extra team dinner on their night off this week.
After Cooper’s appearance on the television show another injured Wallaby, outside back Drew Mitchell, issued an intriguing but ambiguous comment on Twitter.
“Finding it increasingly difficult to bite my tongue……..,” Mitchell tweeted, failing to elaborate whether he was even discussing Cooper’s comments and whether he supported or disagreed with the Queensland Reds star.
The ARU on Friday released a statement claiming Cooper’s latest interview had left the governing body baffled.
“He talks of an unhappy environment without elaborating,” ARU boss John O’Neill said.
O’Neill was most disturbed by Cooper being “firm about not playing for the Wallabies unless things change”.
“If that is how he feels, then that is his choice,” he said.
Brumbies coach Jake White, who is on holidays in South Africa, said Cooper was out of line.
“What I’ve read, it’s obviously not great for anyone to come out and slander the team you play for and the coach you play for,” White said on South African television show Boots ‘n All.
“It doesn’t matter whether it’s Quade Cooper or any other international player, you can’t allow the players to come out and say what they want, especially in a forum like that.
“I’m sure the ARU are not going to just let this go by.”
O’Neill’s statement didn’t mention whether Cooper was facing disciplinary action.

Like him or loathe him O’Neill, has easily out maneuvered Cooper and perhaps his manager if he was involved. I believe it to be end game, all that I’d left is to witness the act of hari kari in whatever form that takes.
The immaturity of QC has put himself in an untenable position, not only the authorities generally but also, I suspect many of “his ex Wallaby” team mates, particularly those who genuinely believe that it is a privilege to represent their country.
Irrespective of Mitchell’s view, if in support of QC or damning him why would he potentially inflame a situation and set himself up, again in a public forum? He has been really unfortunate with so many injuries but I an lead to believe from all I gave read that he has been looked after.
The likes of Sharpe who at times, I believe not been in Dean’s plans never once spat the dummy. Steyn, dropped for tonight’s game completely will be hurting but his non reaction is the act of a professional sportsman.

I hope that QC never plays in the “yellow’ jumper again. I would love to see him play league with his mate SBW and be exposed as the weak defender that he has shown himself to be in the Green and GOLD. God I hope the Wallabies win tonight and shut the critics and QC up for good. We are after all the 2nd best team in the world and OK at the moment we cannot beat the AB’s and it does not sit well. A VERY important game tonight. Go the Wallabies.

Yes. The timing of what he said is as strange as what he actually said or didn’t say or tried to say but couldn’t quite remember what he was told to say………….and so he kept reverting back to the term ‘environment’ and ‘toxic’.

Cooper attempts to drag his team-mates into his own private spat, at a time when they are trying to prepare for one of the biggest matches of their careers. Difficult to see how any of them will be prepared to play with him after this.

Mike read Georgina Robinson article in the smh and Wayne Smith’s in the aus. Pretty much rubbishes these claims by qc with some choice quotes from inside the wallaby sanctum.

The Wallabies will win in Pretoria because QC is a much better motivator than Robbie Deans.

Spencer, I hope you are right about winning in Pretoria, but would not credit QC with anything – all he has done is bitched and whined and been a distraction for those who ‘really’ want to play for the Wallabies

Ha ha, as if any of the current group are going to speak up at this time.
I dont doubt that the Cooper’s, Beale’s and JOC’s get away with a number of things. The problem is that there are no real established leaders in the group to keep them in line. Im sure if Mortlock, Vickerman etc were still around, then they would handle things much better. At present, who is there?
Sharpe is about to retire, and although currently playing well, has not been a Wallaby certainty for a while now.
AAC does not have the form to hold is place in the side any longer. Taps and Cummins have form and youth over him.
Robinson is likewise struggling to maintain a start.
Pocock is injured, but seems the quiet type regardless, same with Samo.
The only guy in the side (until recently!) with form, experience and (I would imagine) universal respect would be Moore (Drew too if not injured).
This is compunded by a coach who obviously has no people skills, and a CEO who wont face reality. Little wonder there is tensions in the squad.
A number of players shouldn’t be there based on talent, the coach shouldn’t be there based on his record, and those with the talent know it… Sure sounds toxic to me

At the elite level rugby is as much about mindset and team attitude as it is about skills and fitness. The sulking and brooding by Quad Cooper reflects his performance, it drags the team down and is disrespectful to teammates.

are all burning an effigy of deans ,oneill and hawker as their political aspirations reach fever pitch.what has gone on at qru behind the scenes this season? and has lack of discipline by players been brushed under the carpet for commercial and personal agendas.
dont believe some reds players in the wallabies(now injured)are flavour of the month owing to their false confidence and immodestytail wagging dog is the toxicity..

According to a recent well respected Wallaby captain the reason Quade Cooper stole the laptop on the GC a few years back was that the laptop had compromising images of Quade and another man on it.
