The Western Sydney Wanderers make their much-awaited A-League debut tonight as they host championship contenders the Central Coast Mariners. Join us for live scores and commentary from 7.45pm AEST.
Western Sydney will fancy their chances of starting their A-League history with a win tonight against the Central Coast.
Playing at home first up always helps and Western Sydney will be keen to get their campaign up and running to prove that they deserve their place in Australian football’s premier club competition.
The Wanderers have also recruited well and have the talent to potentially trouble the Mariners tonight.
Skipper Michael Beauchamp adds some much needed experience to Western Sydney’s defence. In attack, the Wanderers also possess new recruit and marquee player Shinji Ono.
It will be interesting to see how Ono performs tonight given his injury riddled past.
At his best, Ono is the x-factor for Western Sydney and will open up the Mariners defence if he is given time to orchestrate proceedings in the midfield.
But injuries have plagued Ono’s career and it remains to be seen if the Japanese star will handle the pressure of a Central Coast midfield that will be keen to shut him down.
Speaking of the Mariners midfield, young teenager Tomas Rogic will be the man that Western Sydney needs to keep close tabs on tonight.
Rogic is a player with a very promising future and is the man most likely to ignite the Mariners attack if given the space to thrive on the pitch.
With the Central Coast known for their ability to attack, the Wanderers may struggle in the early stages to match the pace of their opposition.
Although the Wanderers will look to keep things tight for the majority of the contest, the attacking chemistry that the Central Coast possesses should be enough for the Mariners to snare victory in an entertaining contest.
Prediction: Western Sydney 1-3 Central Coast

Well that was rubbish. But early days… I hope both WSW and the Mariners will find their game in the next couple of weeks. Decent turnout in the rain but could have been more.
(No sour grapes intended after SFC’s display earlier.)

It wasnt rubbish, and it wasnt brilliant.
Players didnt instinctively know where each other were, and Ono was clearly thinking ahead of his team-mates, but the defense was well organised.
WSW created more chances, and played better … but unless you can score a goal, you dont win.

IT WAS RUBBISH. But I’m sure both WSW and CCM are capable of a better display and will gel more in the next few weeks.

I thoroughly enjoyed that match – two well-organised teams & WSW – as the home team – with attacking intent.
The game faded in the final 15 minutes as the players got fatigued.
For me, compared to what SydneyFC served up earlier, WSW are miles ahead of SydneyFC – tactically & technically.

The Wanderers have secured their first ever competition points in the A-League and probably were unlucky not to secure the win against the Mariners. Overall, I feel the Wanderers had the better chances tonight with Haliti and Bridge in particular missing huge chances when they were one on one with Ryan. The Central Coast started to dominate late in the second half but the Wanderers held on well and have earned a draw at home. Graham Arnold won’t be happy with the Mariners performance because they were hussled off the ball consistently against the Wanderers. Ono had some sharp touches aswell when he was on for the Wanderers. Overall, A very solid performance for the Wanderers. Thanks for joining us tonight and we look forward to your company next time on The Roar.

Brilliant by WSW. Debut match in the HAL against the best team in the HAL last year and they were not at all over-awed. Dominated the majority of the game.
A bona fide football club – on the pitch & off the pitch.

With that type of finishing, Haliti would not stand a chance at making the roster of an NASL (US second division) or USL PRO (US third division) team. His poor shot selection has kept the score level, when the Wanderers should be leading by now.

1st game of the season. I’ve seen the best in the world – Ronnie, Rooney, Van Persie butcher similar chances.
Check out Holland v Denmark from Euro2012 to see the best strikers miss chances.
But, I’ve not seen USL PRO – maybe the standard is higher than the Netherlands National Team?

Quality is similar to Dutch third division. The likes of Charleston Battery (the best team in this league) would give WSW a run for its money.

The Wanderers first half of football has left alot of positive signs for Western Sydney and they really should be in the lead against the Mariners. Haliti missed two great chances in the first half as he failed to make the most of a one on one situation against Ryan late in the first half. The Wanderers though have played very well and have pressed the Mariners well and have forced some mistakes from the Mariners in midfield. The Wanderers final passes into the penalty area have let them down but they are attacking well. The Mariners have had chances themselves but the Wanderers have scrambled well and have denied the Mariners with that huge opening in defence. All to play for in the second half!

Wanderers have been impressive in this half… They’ll be disappointed Haliti couldn’t take that chance. I think though that the Mariners will come out much stronger in the second half- Western Sydney need to make sure they don’t let it drop off. I’ve been impressed with Kresinger as well, his pressing and work ethic has been very good, and that touch to put Haliti through was quality.

Wanderers have been less unsettled than I feared – theres the odd pass to the man who has gone elsewhere, but it hasnt been too abd

It’s been building through the first half… I’d say it could easily be as much as 15 thousand.

Can the Wanderers last longer than the Fury and Gold Coast? A few wins to start their history will help their cause to remain in the long flight for seasons to come.

Looking forward to a cracking game. Pulsating atmosphere at Parramatta Stadium. A-League Football has finally come to its spiritual home in Australia – Western Sydney.

History will be made tonight as Western Sydney make their debut in the A-League against the Central Coast. It has been a long time coming for the Wanderers but they are finally in the big league and will give it their all tonight against the Mariners. This should be an entertaining contest and I am looking forward to Ono’s performance aswell for the Wanderers. Can Western Sydney cause the upset or will the Mariners start their campaign with a strong win?

No pressure, nothing to lose for the Wandies. An intriguing setup.

It’ll be interesting to see how well the Wanderers gel on defense.
