A bumper double-header of A-League action begins in Newcastle this afternoon when the Newcastle Jets host Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium, with marquee man Emile Heskey expected to start. We’ll have live scores from 3.00pm AEST.
It’s never easy trying to predict future performances of A-League teams based on a slew of sketchy pre-season matches, but if reports are to be believed both Newcastle and Adelaide could be in for a big season.
Jets coach Gary van Egmond has recruited smartly, acquiring a number a young, athletic, talented players – oh, and some guy named Emile Heskey.
His counterpart for today, John Kosmina, has been less prolific in the transfer market, picking up two Argentinian players as well as former Gold Coast players Jake Barker-Daish and Daniel Bowles.
Kosmina will be hoping that last year’s underperforming squad can better live up to expectation this time around, particularly his star number ten Dario Vidosic.
Mystery has surrounded the selection and formation of the Newcastle team during the week and it will be interesting to see how van Egmond sets out his team. He has tried many different combinations throughout preseason and his decisions today might win or lose the game for his side.
Adelaide come into this one today straight from a 120-minute extra-time defeat in Uzbekistan, where they were bundled out of the Asian Champions League by Bunyodkor.
The effects of that match combined with jetlag is expected prove a telling factor for the Reds today, particularly if the Jets can dominate possession of the ball in what is likely to be warm afternoon conditions.
But it might be too simplistic to expect the Jets to stroll out and collect three points here.
Let’s remember that it is a largely young (and somewhat inexperienced) lineup, the Jets do have a habit of dropping games they are expected to win at home sometimes, and Adelaide do have a decent record in Newcastle.
They could do enough to steal at least a point at Hunter Stadium today. We’ll have live scores from 3.00pm AEST.

Around 2pm and it is 21 degrees with a coolish southerly blowing around 35km/h. Winds not expected to die down too much this afternoon.
Coin toss could be important here for the home side. Will they elect to run with the wind towards the northern goals in the second half?
