An enthralling opening weekend of A-League comes to an end with Perth Glory facing up against Brisbane Roar in a grand final rematch, live from Patersons Stadium from 5.00pm AEDT.
Last season’s decider ended in highly controversial circumstances – the tears of Tony Sage, the sea of delirious orange fans and of course, Berisha playing the villain – and is still firmly implanted in our memories.
The duel between the two most prolific scorers the league has ever seen in the aforementioned Albanian and Perth star Shane Smeltz will be worth the price of admission alone, not to mention the presence of a ferocious home crowd who will be keen to remind the champions of the contentious circumstances in which they snatched the trophy away in the dying seconds of the grand final.
With most eyes on fellow Japanese import Shinji Ono, the Glory might surprise Brisbane with the skill and guile of Cerezo Osaka loanee Ryo Nagai, who has looked very decent in pre-season performances out west.
Exciting former GC United player Ben Halloran will make his debut for the Roar and comes with a lot of plaudits in his time with the now defunct franchise.
His former teammate Michael Thwaite will line-up on the opposite field, giving the Glory a physical advantage that will suit Ian Mitchell’s style of play.
I would hope that the vastness of the AFL stadium that is being used doesn’t suck the atmosphere out of what should be a fiery encounter that really could go either way.
Let’s just pray it doesn’t end with another dive.

Great view of the game from the second level of the stand at the city end of Subi,but it was a different story where my son & his fiancee were,at ground level.
Maybe they should have put the pitch down the other end,as they could fit more people into elevated locations in the 3 tier stand..

Great theatre, alas I’m on the losing side this time. I thought a draw would have a been fair result, but Perth controlled the 2nd half so no complaints. We struggled to keep possession and I thought we (BNE) lacked a killer final ball. Broich didn’t get as many touches as I anticipated. Excited about what Halloran can do when given some room, saw glimpses of it this afternoon.
Burns reminded everyone why he is perhaps HAL’s biggest thug – highlights including elbows to face (Murdocca) and fingers near the face (Nichols). Classy guy. Conversely, great integrity from Smeltz – keeping his feet under a challenge a Theo and trying to chase it down rather than going to deck. Similarly, Berisha’s post match presser meant he was an honourable loser, good character again.
Also, credit to the FFA/Fox Sports for showing the plane overhead and the funny signs from both sets of supporters. Too often the FFA censors anything and everything but showing those pictures added to the colour of the broadcast.
Jurman performed much better than I feared, seems to have improved alot during the offseason, hopefully I’ll keep eating the humble pie. I thought Hingert replaced Franjic admirably, such a shame he spoiled his afternoon by giving Jamieson too much time and space down our right flank in the lead up to the goal.

On a serious note i’ve heard a girl was hit with a flare at Leederville station and may have been burnt.Absolutely moronic behavior and you can bet your bottom dollar it will be big news today.Yet many will say it adds to the atmosphere.What the hell is going on flares have never been part of the Glory support they made an appearence in the Finals as well,find the little pricks who are bringing them in and ban em.

Sweet revenge for Perth!!
A game which was looking certain to fizzle out to a 0-0 was saved by Billy Mehmet’s thumping header with a couple of minutes to go. The Glory fans were no doubt looking forward to this one all off-season long and this very vocal 14,000 crowd was absolutely rocking throughout, especially when they took the lead!
The last couple of minutes were not without incident, as Halloran almost equalised only to be denied by the woodwork.
Bas van den Brink and the midfield duo of Miller and Burns were the Glory’s best, Halloran looked lively for Brisbane and Paartalu was his typical sturdy self. Broich however, was very quiet and it’s clear Nick Fitzgerald is no replacement for Henrique.
What a great first week of football from a crowd perspective, and the product wasn’t bad either. Except for Terry McFlynn.

What a spiteful affair – was anyone shocked? Both teams had a few decent chances but the main talking points will come from a couple of skirmishes that we saw at either end of the pitch.
A pretty loud atmosphere from the sound of things, and hopefully we get a goal in the second half.
