Round two of the A-League kicks off with the impressive-looking Adelaide United looking for an important three points at home against Western Sydney Wanderers, who are out to make a name for themselves. We’ll have coverage from 7.30pm AEST.

The A-League new boys struggled to impose their dominance at times when they were in the driving seat last week against the Mariners.

Haliti and Bridge looked like they attended the Fernando Torres school of finishing and both missed clear chances to put their team ahead.

But the Wanderers did earn their first ever points in the A-League with the draw at home.

That is a big thing for a new club in an established league, as AFL clubs GWS Giants and the Gold Coast Suns will tell you.

Head Coach Tony Popovic will take the positives from encounters like the one just past, and use them to build his squad up over the course over the season.

One notable positive Popovic will take from last week’s match was the clear-cut class and composure of marquee man Shinji Ono. There were a number of touches and passes that caught the eye, and the smart money would be on him making his starting-11 debut this week.

Adelaide on the other hand put together a tidy display in Newcastle last Sunday. Travelling to Newcastle and putting on the display they did speaks volumes of the character of the club.

Granted, the Jets played poorly. Very poorly to be honest, but you must remember that Adelaide had barely touched down on Australian soil after a gruelling trip home from their ACL game against Bunyodkor in Uzbekistan.

With just over two days to recover, train, prepare and travel for the game against Newcastle, it was a heroic effort from Kosmina’s men.

Prediction

Assuming Ono starts, and the Wanderers can soak up pressure like they did against the Mariners, the boys from Western Sydney are in with a chance.

They showed promise and conviction in their first match, but really lacked the final pass and finishing to put a game to bed.

Adelaide are at home, and come off the back of a very good 2-0 win last week. I think the Reds will be too strong for the Wanderers, but they will be pushed hard for the three points.

Adelaide 3-1 Western Sydney.
